Default What is Panini Thinking!?!? 2024-25 Prizm Deca Basketball Hobby Online Auction

Panini is auctioning 2024-25 Prizm Deca Basketball hobby this week. A product with well over 20,000 boxes. The football version was auctioned and hit the $500 floor a month or so ago. That was with Prizm Football hobby selling for $1200 a box. Prizm basketball hobby is barely $400 a box. The floor on Deca Basketball is $400 a box! If it was $250 it wouldn’t sell out during the auction. Will Panini even be able to sell 15% of this product during the auction? With $45 drops I can’t imagine 1 single box of this will sell above the $400 floor price. Average buyer would be looking at around $475 a box total to buy 1 drop above the floor.

In the 6 years Panini has run auctions this product will have the least percentage of boxes sold during the auction in history. If you only count the amount of boxes these guys now make available during the auction I don’t even know what a close second would be. If the floor was $200 instead of $400 there is a pretty good chance it would make it to a $200 floor price.

I think if no one purchased a single box, panini would finally realize it’s not 2022 any more.

Let’s see how much self restraint degenerate gamblers have.

But that's the thing. There are stupid people but not THAT MANY stupid people to buy this during the auction.

One big thing is the box count. Another is we now know that Deca is not worth what regular Prizm is. Last year you had to guess. This year you know. Prizm Basketball hobby is barely above $400 a box.

It made no sense for anyone to buy Deca Football above $1000-$1100 a box. Regular Prizm Hobby was barely above that. It hit the $500 floor.

It doesn't make any sense for anyone to buy Deca Basketball hobby even at the $400 floor. However, let's say you want a box and only want to buy from Panini. The only people buying this will be buying at $400. If football made it to $500 when Prizm hobby was selling for well over double that how many boxes realistically do they think they can and will sell of Deca Basketball at $400 in basically a 5 minute window? Keep in mind this is the biggest box count of any auction they have ever ran or damn near close to it. 20,000+ boxes. So many they will let you buy multiple cases at once. They will sell the lowest percentage of boxes they have made available during any auction ever.

I think you may be the only sentient being in the universe concerned about the drop of 2nd year deca basketbol, let alone perturbed about the circumstances surrounding its release.

But that's why we've grown to hear you, Moss.

A lone voice in the wilderness. Insisting that wax be reasonable.

Wax prices high same reason luxury apartment buildings sit empty for decades.

If the floor price was $200 and virtually every box was going to be auctioned Im sure countless people would be interested. Panini has alienated 99% of the people that used to buy during auctions by not running fair auctions with all the boxes available and/or having a ridiculously high floor price.

2024-25 Basketball hobby should be prime time for people that like to open. Every single hobby product should be at or below MSRP. Of course the biggest clown of them all actually has some products listed for close to 3 times MSRP presale. Prizm hobby is currently selling below MSRP and these thieves still do everything they can to artificially manipulate the market. I'd be willing to bet BO won't presell 1% of their 24-25 Basketball hobby allocation for the posted over MSRP price on their website for this entire year! It may actually be closer to 1 box than 1% on a per product basis.

Talking about the circumstances of the Deca Basketball release is hilarious if you look it over. There hasn't been 1 single Deca Basketball FOTL box listed on dealernet or ebay. Not 1 box! Optic Football Premium sets released right around the same time. Those are like 15% of the print run of Deca FOTL. 300 total boxes. Between dealernet and ebay probably 75 of those sets have been listed. It's very conceivable that almost all of Deca hobby has already been presold at a much lower price than $400. Panini just hoping to take advantage of the few idiots out there to sell the rest.

Then essentially Poopnini is shooting themselves in the foot, and we should be all for it. If it's not selling, then either they're sitting untouched on a factory wearhouse floor developing a natural patina, or backdoored to distributors at an undisclosed discount to clear space and keep the illusion going. Either way, we all know groupbreakers are the only ones keeping the wheels churning and the lie alive. Until there's a way to legally classify it as gambling and attach associated tax implications, nothing's going to change.

Degens gonna degen.

Panini is rapidly running out of road when it comes to licensed basketball releases. By my calculation, they have (incl Prizm Deca) six releases publicly lined up:

May 22nd: 24-25 Prizm Deca
May 23rd: 24-25 Revolution
Jun 18th: 24-25 Select
Jul 17th: 24-25 Donruss Optic
Jul 23rd: 24-25 Noir
Aug 6th: 24/25 National Treasures

That leaves them eight weeks to release anything else, before the door slams shut on 1st October.

Panini & their approach to distributing new releases, becomes a part of the past for basketball card collectors & we start to see what the medium term future with Fanatics / Topps, finally looks like.

For me, that is when things really get interesting.

I'm not surprised. Topps comes into play October 1. They might think that it's Prizm and they'll buy anyway. Seems crazy to me.

The only way prices come down is if people stop buying in to the prices.

Topps/Fanatics will make it a new game in town.

That said, Moss has some good F them points.

So yeah, the Celtics jack up a lot of threes and their style of play is not exactly fun to watch, but they'll be out sooner than you expect and a new dominant team is on the horizon.

Once you get used to their use of AI in playmaking, they are a fun bunch.

Don't want to scare all the midwestern grannies. They are definitively not using AI for random play and card design.

There is still no team that has beat the algorithm. Since the '68 Harlem Globetrotters.

I’m confused. So this one has the same design as the 2024-2025 regular prizm release which came from the 2013 set?

I'm guessing since '23 deca was an ode to 2012 prizm with the design '24 deca will have the design of 2013 prizm. I honestly thought deca was going to be a 1 time thing but I guess panini has nothing to lose at this point.

It's the one item of the still being released 2024 season that I can remember.

Ten more years of Deca, I say, maybe skipping 22-23.

Looks like Panini reads BO, they moved the floor to 300.
