Default What are your thoughts on the 2003 Michael Jordan Ultimate Collection

What are your thoughts on this card? Collectible? Or not so much as U believe these were the year after he retired

It's a great set and a nice looking card. But it's a subset and very over-priced. That's what I think about it.

Thanks for the replies! My thoughts are that it is the year after he retired, and not during his “playing years”.

I mean, from the "career capstone" perspective, I like it. Did they do other designs, or is that it?

I prefer the base over the subset, but it's a nice, classic looking set.

Grabbing the Gold version would be the way to go.

I would also prefer any Exquisite base card over Ultimate.

I can see why you’d say that.

To be fair, that was my first effort and use of graffiti pens. It's like listening to an old scratchy recording of the Quarrymen and saying they'll never amount to anything.

May not be up to Meet the Beatles, but I think this is at least Decca audition worthy.

If I get down to what I don't really like about the design is it seems too safely digital. It's not the raw, hungry Jordan. It's the guy who has all the laurels and is now being celebrated for the money. I see why he ultimately pulled his Bulls likeness from the hobby.

You sure you don’t want to collect Bol Bol instead? He looks hungry.

I will say that I prefer flux pulsar to Ultimate Collection if we want to go the aesthetics route. There was a lot I liked about that set that had nothing to do with the inserts. First of all, it's great for sketching because the design is spare and duotone.

It also embodies the late 1990s aesthetic that was largely lost by 2003.

The Ultimate Collection does offer some interesting horizontal stripes that might be fun to riff off of. However I don't know how much it would cost to amass the 100 Jordans it would take to do a project.

Sure don't want to be cranking out Muggsy Bogues.

Also, Jordan value is capped. IF it goes any higher, it's not because of any game or event.

Now I know people are probably so relieved to be in Chicago, it's taking MJ to new heights. But my end of the game will always be assessing current talent. Moment I feel Nesmith has hit a peak I sell and move on. But how many players in the league are heading into the season polling for position on a G7 Finals team?

To answer your question - I like Ultimate Collection, Jordan, and 2003 had one of the greatest RC classes ever, so that is definitely a very collectible card for me!

I don't understand your "playing years" thought though, what does that mean? The year after a player retires is the first time I can get their entire career stats on card - it's significantly more important to me than say, two years before they retire! In fact, it's my third favorite year to collect of a player - after their RC and second year base which has their RC year stats... but then again, I'm a collector who even likes the back of cards so what do I know... either way, I'd take that card - you don't show the back but it does show his career stats on it and a pretty cool comment!

I'm pretty much the opposite. I would take a GU game-year Jordan wizards napkin over a later year Bulls napkin, or really anything not named Exquisite.

Dang, love that perspective on post playing days cards, and never heard that side of it before. Collectors in general prefer to collect cards released during a player’s playing days, by my estimation because it’s a natural cutoff for collecting their cards. Ie if you collect post playing days cards, there’s then an infinite supply of cards available of that player. But man the full career stats on the back is a game changer.

As to the card, I prefer the subset to the base. Way better photo.

Personally, I believe cards the year after someone retires, assuming they played the previous year, are still be part of their "playing years" cards. After all, their final season stats would normally be on them. However, it should also be on the team the athlete played for. Otherwise its just a retrospective/career celebration card like this one is.

Agreed regarding the backs of cards.

This one shows some pretty GOAT seasons and the Wizards years.

95/96 Fleer ultra is epic too.

3 pics on the back. Gosh I miss those days.

Panini typically put the same pic on the front and back. Lame.

Yeah, I wonder if Upper Deck started with a Wizards photo during design and was just like "nah". Haha

Edited to add: Heck, maybe Jordan had some say. If that ever came out as fact, he gets a 100% pass.
