Default Forcing purchases when requesting combined shipping might be eBay’s dumbest idea yet

No idea how long this has been going on, but this is utterly ridiculous. eBay now requires you to purchase any items you request combined shipping on.

I requested a shipping total for 10 diecast cars @ $50. The seller quoted $40 and I was forced to buy them with no option to decline or dispute the shipping. They arrived today…postage was $16.58

Next diecast purchase I requested combined shipping for 3 cars listed for $14.95 total…$5.95, $4.50, and $4.50. Got my request back…$14.95. Instead of giving me a discount on combined shipping, he RAISED shipping prices on the two $4.50 cars and quoted me the exact same price and I was forced to buy them

eBay does some colossally dumb s*** but this might take the cake

That's news to me. It does sound dumb. Tell the sellers to refund you for the extra shipping or you'll neg them.

I sold 2ea Best Offer cards to two different buyers last week and I couldn’t even offer to send them an invoice with combined shipping like I could before.

Leave the seller a negative, its legit and will force them to make changes to keep their ratings up to receive seller discounts.

I bought 5 cards from Probstein over 2 different days (3 days apart). EBay required payment for each auction within an hour of the auction ending. When eBay requires payment that quickly they don't offer an option for combined shipping. Instead of having the option of paying roughly $6 for shipping 5 cards I had to pay $26.25 shipping on 5 cards that arrived in 5 different envelopes over 2 days. I cannot come up with something more #@#@#@#@ing stupid than this. What I don't get is other people that bought cards during this same auction had autopay set to 7 days in the future and was able to combine shipping on 30+ cards down to $10.

Hopefully this is ironed out before I start buying again in October. The Probstein thing is a bit worrisome becaues they even state in their listing that you've got 10 days to combine shipping. Hopefully this is just a glitch.

I'm confused. How do you request combined shipping before making the purchase? I've never received such a request as a seller. Usually they buy the items first, and then I'll get the message requesting an invoice. Are you saying that you can now select items you want and request shipping before you actually hit Best Offer or Buy It Now?

If someone is curious about my combined rates they usually just send a message. Like "Hey, I'm interested in 10 cards. Before I do anything, what would the shipping be?"

Sorry, I'm just not understanding how you were forced to buy anything that you didn't already make an offer on???

I looked everywhere I can find in my profile and don’t see a way to change the autopay option. Everything I find online says this is a seller option that the buyer can’t change. This has only happened with Probstein so I assumed it was a setting on their end that I’m somehow looped into. If you can point me to where to change it beers on me

I don't think this is correct. I think it's a seller setting. One seller I bought a card from recently offered up to 7 days to pay in case you wanted to do combined shipping. Another seller required payment within an hour. No settings were changed on my end.

I believe you are correct. I had to make this change (as a seller) when my buyers were being charged without the ability to combine shipping. The problem was they never told us sellers about it. You have to dig for it.

I rarely sell on eBay so I'm not experienced on the seller side. Any idea why the same seller would have different autopay options/requirements for different buyers? I had an hour autopay for my auctions but other people bidding on the same group of cards were set to 7 days. I could see if someone has a history of not paying or bad feedback, but I'm sitting at 100% so not sure that's it either.

Only thing I can think of is that previous buyers are given the 7-day window? I don't sell on eBay these days so not sure how things work from the seller perspective. Probstein has definitely required 1-hour payment for the stuff I bid on and I don't think I have bought from them before.

Good point. I've probably bought a couple dozen cards off them over the years, but it's probably been a while (years) so maybe that has something to do with it.

Put all cards in the cart and go to checkout and see if there is options in shipping charges...
I have ebay standard on all cards less than $20 so if you add the cards to the cart it would show 1.50 per card, but I also have 5.25 unlimited shipping, but you have to change the 1.50 to 5.25 for each item and then after you change the 1st one the rest when you change to 5.25, they become free shipping. for a combined total of $5.25...
I wish ebay would automatically pick the best option for the buyer but they don't

After leaving zero negs in the first quarter century I spent on eBay I’m about to leave 10 in the next two minutes. I asked the seller to refund me the difference in shipping and he sent back 50 cents. For what it’s worth he had no idea about the autopay when requesting combined shipping feature, so I doubt it’s a thing sellers are intentionally opting in to. His counterargument for charging me more than double for shipping is I could have declined the invoice Now sellers have to deal with this crap policy too

This doesn’t seem to affect sellers who have combined shipping already set up. I just bought several cards from COMC and shipping was automatically calculated as I added them to my cart

I am definitely able to change it as a buyer. I checked the original scare post and did a few seconds of searching as this would affect my buying. When i bid on an item from probstein (or anyone) i have the option to change between autopay 7 days and one hour before placing the bid. This option is newly visible, but nothing has changed for me procedurally. Likely the OP has to put a credit card on file for this autopay option to be allowed, or something else that can be done w/minimal research. But they chose to do what most average americans do and go full karen

So this is an option you have to choose before you make the bid? Where is the option at?

Here is it on mobile. In the top right corner, click the credit card symbol:

Then click the "timing" setting:

And there is the option:

I had two individual card orders that the buyers used to extend payment a week. Not a big deal per se, and within the rules, but something that I was unaware of. Their payment auto-applied after seven days using the above method you highlight.

Looks like I owe you a beer. Crazy that I just went to fake bid on a few items to test this out and they all defaulted to 7-day after defaulting to 1-hour last week when I bought a bunch of crap from Probstein. I’ll probably forget about this by the next time someone drops dozens of Franks I want to bid on. Thanks!

Wish I had known this last night!

Great information. I hate the autopayment as I always combine like 10-15 cards at once to use PayPal credit

7 days is now plenty. Haha

Thanks!
