Default Have you notified outrageous prices on ebay latetly?

Id like to get your guys opinions on this.

Have you noticed outrageous prices on ebay lately?

Im asking because, when I look for a card on ebay, it always seems like a seller will list a card at a ridiculous price, then everyone that lists that card after, plays "follow the leader" and now you have ten cards at all the same price.(example a card listed at $200). If its a card I really want, then I have no choice but to pay their price if I want the card.

The problem is, when it comes to me selling card eventually, I put it on auction and then it sells for $35! Seems like with this type of buying Im always losing money on my purchases! I know people will say buy smarter, but how can you when sellers all list cards so high to begin with?

I guess one option is to patiently wait and hope one day the card will be on auction then I can try to get it cheaper, but I have FOMO. An example is, Ive wanted a 1983 topps signed ryne sandberg for awhile, I always saw them on ebay for $75-$100, but kept passing up on that price, now of course they are $300-$500! So I buy with the thought "if I dont get it now, the price will be ridiculous later".

Anyone else experience this? Your thoughts on this?

I’ve noticed the same thing. It seems auction prices are going ridiculously low on a lot of cards lately. I just try to be patient, between auctions and local shows, I can usually find what I want.

Agree! Im starting to think the better approach might be to just be patient and wait for auctions instead and just build my collection slowly. But the FOMO keeps telling to buy now! Glad im not the only one that deals with this!

I would just buy a non-auto 1983 Sandberg Topps rc and a Mancave certified Sandberg auto 8x10 and frame them together.

Probably get it all together for $75 single mat frame? (With the frame being the most part of the value) *Michael's has good weekly coupons.

I find eBay to generally be better than COMC for pricing, at least for the under $20 stuff I'm typically buying. Yes, you can often get a discount if an item is on auction but sometimes the opposite happens. I find plenty of good BINs but sometimes take some search kung-fu to uncover the better deals.

Patience is the answer. FOMO is a heck of a drug. Don't give in to those falsely inflated prices by those using ebay for their personal showroom. You WILL find the card at market price eventually.

Also, Sandberg prices WILL come down. There is always a spike when a player dies. Don't rush to get his stuff right now. It's way more expensive than it will be this time next year.

Buy from auctions, sell at fixed price, and then notify your bank.

Thank you my friend for your thoughts on this. This is exactly what I need to do . I’ve never been patient but I feel I now need to as im losing to much money when I go to sell my cards. You are right, I need to remember that no card is so rare that it will never show up for sale again and that all cards will eventually be back on eBay one day.

And Thank you all for your thoughts on this.

It’s funny, but nowadays, every seller needs to get a minimum of 10% higher than the last “comp”, otherwise they feel wronged.

My custom T-shirt says when I go to card shows...

" I set the COMPS!"

Actually you do have a choice, many of them:

1. Wait for an auction
2. Send your Best Offer
3. Put them on your Watch List and wait for a seller's sale
4. Post in the BST here and in a comparable FB Group, WTB(Want To Buy ads)
5. Attempt to find the seller off of eBay, maybe they have a brick & mortar or on social media and negotiate a lower price. You don't even have to say you're from eBay.

There are 10 posted. You should be fine. Now if there was only a handful produced. Do what you gotta do.

Good luck, you've been notified!

It's crazy how many posts I see of people asking if they should buy a card, that's serial numbered to /5, for $100 over comps. Then the next fact is there were 3 comparable sales of all different serial numbers.

I usually laugh and think about the 90's collectors that are still looking for cards numbered to /100 or less, some even higher, 25 years later. Haha

These are all excellent suggestions....

It also helps to do your research and find out what the card has been actually selling for (as opposed to what it is actually being listed for). And don't hesitate to share the results of your research with sellers.

Example #1 - card was listed at $99...was a 2015 card of a player who was hobby hot pre-pandemic but is now out of baseball. I messaged the seller stating that a reasonable price in 2025 was $20-25 based on similar cards of the same player. He messaged back that he had listed the card 7-8 years ago and had never bothered to change the price and sold me the card for $25.

Example #2 - card was listed at $600 BIN/BO....HOFer auto #/10....I researched past sales (there were two, an auction at $365, and a BO at $425.) Made an offer of $400 and included the past sales data in my message. Was accepted without a counter.

Point being that there are a LOT of casual sellers out there (myself included) who do not check prices obsessively and may have cards listed with out of date prices. And if you take the time to politely bring that fact to their attention, you can usually get a deal done at a reasonable price.

So you’re hitting high BINs due to FOMO, then listing them at auction shortly after, and are surprised when they sell for less? Do I have all this correct?

No, not all what I said. I buy cards (with FOMO) and whenever I go to sell my cards (cards I’ve had for YEARS) due to several different factors (boredom, loss of interest in the card, switching collection goals, upgrading a card, etc). I don’t buy and resell immediately, just as my collection needs change.

Auctions are for buying, BINs are for selling

This is simply a horrible strategy

So what’s the point of this post?
