Her comments were pathetic. As was Disney's handling of it.

Completely forgot all about it.

Here's a good rule to follow. Don't take medical advice from celebrities and athletes.

A lot of people on social media wanted her to continue the case through discovery and depositions -- especially from the bigwigs at Lucasfilm.

But she just wanted the case to be over with and for her acting career to continue.

At the end of the day, this was pretty much a nothingburger -- aside from a nice statement from Disney and a big payout.

It just goes to show how stupid the people in Hollywood are (yes, I know Lucasfilm is in Northern California).

If Kathleen Kennedy is still with Disney, she'll double down and fire Gina again for something.

It was pretty rich to see South Park making fun of the people who make fun of Kennedy only for those same people to think South Park was making fun of Kennedy.

I haven't seen it, as I don't have Paramount+ -- literally the only streamer I don't have access to.

I got turned off of South Park after reports of Trey and Matt screwing over Warner Bros by having "specials" shown on Paramount+ -- seemed like a greedy move by them.

It's possible there wasn't even a payout (maybe covering attorney's fee or something small). Just the fact that Disney came out and stated they settled is pretty huge. While not admitting they were wrong, it's pretty close. Additionally there was likely some promise of work involved here. Before the whole thing blew up there was talk of the character Cara Dune getting her own show. It's possible something like that happens now.

There is very little chance that Gina wins this lawsuit. While she has every right to freedom of speech, Disney does too. By firing her over her comments they were exercising their freedom of speech. People want to believe that having freedom of speech means you have freedom of consequences as well, but that isn't the case.

There absolutely was a big payout -- it's one of the main reasons why she was willing to settle. Disney tried to have the case thrown out and were unsuccessful, so they caved in and made her a big offer to end the suit and avoid discovery and depositions.

I'm not a lawyer, but I think she had a fairly strong case due to the nasty statement Lucasfilm put out about her after they terminated her and the fact that her costars like Pedro Pascal faced no "consequences" for making arguably worse social media posts during around the same time.

Why? Because a non-lawyer can't give a valid opinion on the merits of a defamation case? Lawyers are a dime a dozen, and there is a reason for it: they have a relatively low bar -- pun intended -- to clear to become one. We're not talking about medical students needing many years to become a licensed doctor.

Disney clearly defamed Carano in an official company statement, and it costs her financially and reputationally:

Quote:
Ms. Carano’s character was written out of “The Mandalorian” in 2021. At the time, Lucasfilm, the Disney division that makes the “Star Wars”-affiliated series, said in a statement that her “social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

United Talent Agency also dropped Ms. Carano. Her acting career, which had included small roles in “Fast & Furious 6” (2013) and “Deadpool” (2016), came to an abrupt halt.
...
Disney had tried to get a federal judge to dismiss the lawsuit on First Amendment grounds. In a motion, Disney said it was “entitled to protect its creative speech in the ‘Star Wars’ series from association with views Disney and many viewers (and potential viewers) considered offensive and contrary to Disney’s values.”

The company lost that bid. An attempt by Disney to appeal the decision and delay the case also failed.

Pretty unnecessary and foolish behavior by a publicly-traded company.

I'm not saying she didn't get paid. I'm just saying it's not an absolute. Unless the terms are disclosed (which likely won't happen as it's like part of the settlement) we won't really no what she got. As I stated the fact that Disney settled is a huge win for her in itself. It also sounds like Disney is going to work with her as well.

She didn't really have a strong case. You absolutely can be fired from your job for saying things that are not in line with your company's policies. For example, where I work we cannot campaign for politicians. If we do, we get fired. This is a consequence to exercising free speech.

I'm also not a lawyer.

I glad this worked out for Gina 'cuz Cara Dune reminds people that they ripped off "Dune" from "Star Wars".

Wonder Bread-style Cara card from an imaginary loaf:

I couldn't care less if she ever does anything for Disney/Star Wars moving forward. Gina won and Disney lost.

Also, Kathleen Kennedy sucks!

A lot of people saw the new Star Wars sequels, didn't like them, and moved on with their lives. IMO they weren't great but the prequels were pretty bad too.
