Default $1000 to spend on blaster case---What are you getting?

So my son is getting back into collecting again after I got him a couple hobby boxes for Christmas. He really hasn't busted much wax in about 5 years. I know it's a totally different world price wise, and lack of return.

However, I'd like to get him something that has the chance for a big hit, plenty of packs to open, and have some fun during NFL playoffs.

So....... if you had $1000 to spend on a case of blasters or megas, what is the best out there right now for possible return on investment, or chance at hitting something that could cover a good portion of the cost?

Thanks all, and GO Pack GO!

My personal choice is to spend the money on a big single or multiple singles of my favorite player so I know I’m guaranteed to get something nice.

That said, if you Kia have some wax to open, some 2018 Prizm would be good.

No way on earth I'm spending $1,000 on a blaster case like it's a lottery ticket.

I'd sooner buy $1,000 worth of Powerball tickets - at least that way, if I hit, my life would change.

Likely what you'll end up with w/ a Blaster case is a Downtown or Kaboom which has been (not officially, bust I suspect) - printed 2-3-4x the usual SSP #s since Panini has lost the license, and won't hold much value once Topps has whatever their SSP variations / case hits are next year.

You said Go Pack Go, I'd take that $1,000 and buy a nice card for your boy.

Links are giving me heck this morning - but went to eBay and saw an auction for an PSA 10 2020 Contenders on-card auto card of Jordan Love sold in late December for $992. An Immac Love RPA PSA 9 went for $1,000 and change.

That's what I'd do, personally.

Sorry, but spending $1,000+ on any retail (especially at the prices today, I don't care what it is) is a fool's bargain.

It’s better to buy singles, or if being unlicensed isn’t a concern, go for something like what Wild Card is releasing now. Don't know how old your kid is, but Wild Card's Dino-Might/Pre-Historic releases are a hit with the kids and might be a good option.

Yeah was going to say this exactly.

Maybe budget 500-750 on single/s and then spend the 250-500 on wax for fun. Probably the most responsible way to do it.

Donruss for sure. I have been pretty lucky hitting Downtowns out of them, and I hit 3 in one case. Not saying that will always happen, but 1-2 Downtowns of the right player pays for the case and then some

Donruss is the answer to the question being asked. I'd probably do Megas. No guarantee, but likely to pull a downtown from a sealed case, and also have lots of other cards that may be looked at for grading. Donruss has a high gem rate. Also, lots of cards for him to then trade with friends for other things he wants.

Just go into it with the expectation that you are paying for the experience/fun of opening. Like paying for NFL playoff tickets this weekend, but after the case of Donruss, you will have something to look at afterwards and you will get some of that money back.

Looking for Andre Dawson Serial numbered cards that are his jersey number - either #8 or #10. So looking for cards like 8/8 or 08/99 or 10/250.

Donruss megas. You get around 5 optic previews in each one, a chance at Downtowns, autos and jersey things. Plus a rookie per pack. There are also some numbered cards and Revolution inserts that could be low numbered.

I’ve also seen Phoenix hobby blasters put out ok results.

It seems like rationalization to call it fun/experience to assume you're going to light 1000 dollars on fire and be left with most likely trash-can base/inserts junk.

I get it. I opened packs when I was a kid, with my dad too. And not specifically saying this against you, but it sort of reeks of gambling addict mentality to me when people buy tons of wax/rip and 99% of the time lose money. To justify that with "fun" seems weird, same thing casinos/sportsbooks claim.

Took 5 mins or less on ebay - this guy could literally buy a 1957 Bart Starr RC for 1000 dollars BIN right now. No idea if that is a good deal. But you could also easily get a Rodgers auto + Favre auto for under 500-600 bucks. And I'm sure you could get a RC of each slabbed for under 100-200. And I'm sure you could get a cool, low pop maybe, Love RC for 100-200 or less.

So hypothetically what are the odds of pulling something cooler/better than a Rodgers, Favre, and Love auto - all three. Because you could probably buy all 3 and still have a few hundred backs left over to waste on a blaster/box of Donruss or any Poopnini product, maybe try to chase a Kangaroo prizm off a few prizm blasters/packs or something.

Bro — love this. + 1

My favorite thing in the hobby when people trying to justify burning $1,000 + on wax because it’s just so “fun / have a blast “ right ?

Gambling addicts……

This is true, most people that spend $700-$800 even on a hobby box are usually lucky to pull $200-$300 worth of cards. Buying the actual cards you want is certainly better, but back to the blasters for a second- if you want to have the fun of opening, Donruss blasters give you a lot of cards and chances at Dowontowns.

Also, if your kid would love a chance to pull a lot of autos, and you don't care about licensed vs unlicensed, give Wild Card or Leaf a try. For $1000, you have a chance to come away with a ton of autos including a lot of top end QBs

Have fun with whatever break you choose. I find it funny how many people #@#@#@#@ on breaking for fun.

I would MUCH rather buy $1,000 worth of Whatever Retail is at my Local Target, Pick up some Hot Dogs, Buns, and a case of Soda and chips. Watch the Bears at my house tonight while opening and eating with my daughter Than spending $1,000 to go to the game tonight, sit in the 400s or whatever the High Level seats are called freezing my ass off. But Im sure most of you would say the $1,000 is worth the experience. Same #@#@#@#@ here...

Thanks. Yeah this "hobby" or card world is just riddled with gambling. Is what it is. The repacks and mystery packs and s- like that being so popular just proves it further.

It's a false equivalence.

I hear you, I wouldn't want to drive to Gillette to get nickel and dimed in the freezing cold only to then face zombie apocalypse level traffic to get home at 12 am.

But this isn't a binary option.

First off, we don't have context and this is nuanced. We don't know if OP here or anyone is making 60k a year income or 500k a year. We don't know anyone's net worth or fiscal habits, etc. That matters. But without going too deep, I agree it could be a good memory and experience to have with your kid. To rip some packs, watch the playoff game. I get it.

But I'm sure there were points in time where thousands of dads bought wax (for themselves really, possibly gambling) to rip with their kids and they spent more money on wax than it cost to buy a 52' Mantle or 86' Jordan or 2000 Brady Contenders, probably 10x over.

Not to say a 300-500 dollar Rodgers auto will ever appreciate to that. But I'm saying that the wax is going to be a huge L 99% of the time. So why not hedge the bet (no pun intended) and not dump the full 1000 dollars or whatever amount, and use at least 30-50% of that budget on a quality slab or two. Seems braindead not to.

MotherTeresaCards.com never change…always so worried about others peoples business. Imagine putting that energy into something charitable.

~~~
OP-have to grab a case that can hit a downtown or a kaboom anything else retail wise is not worth it in football as your stuck with sticker autos and crappy parallels. Even prizm won’t be worth the peel.
The classic BO Cope is always to weave the ripping of thousands in wax with the kid "experience." Tale as old as time.
I throw out another product that I thought was fun as heck to open and had some good low #d parallels throughout.
2025 Panini Revolution PREMIUM edition....looks like they are selling on the bay for about $200 per and $210 on BO
I posted a few in hits in the break section and several YT videos.
GL in whatever you chose!
I realize there are a lot of them, but not everybody who rips wax is a gambling addict. Everyone who collects also doesn't necessarily 100% care about value. Personally $1000 is way over any budget I've ever held for ripping wax, but everyone has their own budget. The last time I bought a hobby box they were still primarily in the $50-$200 range. I personally enjoyed the act of ripping/sorting & if I pulled a nice card it was a bonus. Having a buddy over with a 6 pack of beer, a pizza & a box of flagship while watching a baseball game was always a good time and cheaper than we would have spent if we would've went out. Could I have bought a $50-$200 single and got more value for my money? Of course, but that wasn't the point.
You literally can get a great top-50 Derrick Henry card for $1000. All-time great, 1st ballot, best RB of a generation.
Or spend 1000 and hope for a 2% chance of ripping a card of the next Derrick Henry no name. Make it make sense.
buy 2-3 hobby boxes for the same price instead. I bought a ton of nba blasters on black friday and literally lit $750 on fire and ended up with a pile or worthless garbage.
