Everytime I go to a card shop or a mall they always have either signed jerseys, photos, balls, etc. but they either don't have a COA or have the "store's COA". My question is do you guys generally trust signed memorabilia from these stores? Where do they get all these things? Part of why I am asking this is because i was always curious, but someone is trying to sell me a signed griffey ball that came from a shop in MD in 2004.

I don't trust anything that doesn't have a legit Certificate. Take a look at all the memorabilia issues in the news lately.

We're at a point where we can barely trust what's authentic and what isn't in card products, why should we trust people who print up their own COA's?

Absolutely not. There are plenty of reputable sources who conduct signings regularly and can provide photo proof w/holograms or just get it at a show, in person. I can't understand people's issues with paying for things like this. If you want the real deal, it costs a bit. So, like stated above, pass on anything without a great COA from a known representative or company.

No, don't ever trust a store's COA. Only known companies like Steiner, JSA, PSA/DNA. I used to work in a memorabilia store (Athlon Sports Collectibles) that made their own COA's because they obtained local autographs in person. They closed their physical memorabilia stores now. Many were legit, but every time they misplaced a company COA all they had to do was print one of their own, even if they weren't sure if it was "the real deal."

Wasnt JSA the one where they had a signing of a few stars and a news crew got someone to sign the name of an athlete at the show and they took the fake sig that got the JSA thumbs up certification?
To answer the OP...If I still collected sports stuff, theres one store owner I would trust. |

"Fox TV in Chicago sent an undercover team to investigate JSA Authentication at a baseball card show in Chicago. Click this link to see the broadcast and see how JSA Authentications authenticated a bogus autograph. This is the second time a mistake by Mr. Spence or his company has been made in front of a TV camera. " |
