Default 2012 Bowman Platinum, is it worth it?

Blowout is listing a 6 box case for $514. This seems like a great price. After looking over the checklist though, there wasn't much that really caught my eye, except that Billy Hamilton, the speedy Reds prospect I have the pleasure of watching here in Bakersfield, is among those on the checklist. There also doesn't appear to be any Darvish, base or auto, though I'm sure he could be added. I really like the look of last years Platinum and was just curious if you seasoned collectors think the money risked is worth it.

Granted I think the checklist is better this year, but I got absolutely HOSED on a case last year. Killed. Screwed. Whatever you want to say. And I know I wasn't the only one. Worst case I ever bought.

Not sure if its fair to compare with this year, but the whole thing has scared me away from Platinum for a long, long time.

I bought 3 cases of 2011 and the return was around 30%. A brutal product after they completely changed the checklist right when it released. It was a real bait and switch. Ill never buy Platinum again.

I am not even a fan of this checklist, I will probably buy a case but I wont have high hopes after last years disaster.

Very cautious after last year's offering. I'll hold off until I see some results. Of course I'll risk missing out on a good price if the product is good.

All I have to say is I have a 2011 red refractor auto of Tyler Skaggs, his ONLY Bowman auto Rc so far #'d out of 10 and I can't get $200 for a top pitching prospect. Platinum SUCKS.. nobody pays what the cards are worth. If you need the rush of getting "hits" you might as well open some unlicensed Panini product where you at lead have a shot at pulling patches of Hall of Famers.

Definetly not, Bowman Platinum, even with good names, hardly sells. Wouldn't be surprised if this product gets replaced by something else in 2013.

I have a question, were you suppose to send in anything else with the wrappers? I just sent in one Jumbo box of wrappers, nothing else. Lol. I got out of work late in the afternoon and was trying to make it to the post office in time on the day of release to mail out the wrappers. I just sent them in a box with nothing else. Just my return address and name on the outside of the box as usual.

2010 was pretty solid as far as autos... Autograph Relic Cards included guys like Strasburg, Heyward, Castro; and some decent prospects like Cole, Springer, Jackie Bradley Jr, Sonny Gray etc. The refractor auto checklist was nice too: Trout, Sano, Goldschmidt, Chapman, Montero, etc.

2011 was absolutely horrible. Unless they change the checklist before release I think 2012 might be good.

I think this is a make or break year for Platinum. Cautiously optimistic for sure. I think a lot of people may feel the same way and this could be under ordered.

No doubt I agree with "bait and switch" of the checklists. I had one case to sell and one to sell. Luckily I hit a nice Harper on the case I opened and sold the other case right away for a 20% loss. Although if I had been patient it's selling a fair amount over the original price now....

If they actually do this right it could be a really solid product. Lots of potential with Harper and others first relic/auto relic cards could be really nice.

I'm still unsure if I should to take a risk with Platinum or with Onyx Prospects. Seriously considering not buying a case of either and just buying 3 boxes of each.

If you're busting for fun. Sure, go for it, but don't expect a ton of resale value. Also, as previously noted, don't be surprised if 50%+ of the CL doesn't get switched out when released...

Everything said here, is exactly my feeling as well. I got completely robbed last year with my case. No return value whatsoever. It was absolutely horrible. So much so that I couldn't even enjoy opening the cards after I was half way through.

As a collector who collects alot of base (I know I'm in the minority here) I find it really annoying that there's no Harper in this release (base). It's the same crap they pulled with Prospects and Draft last year.

Someone in the box busting section just pulled a 2012 Bowman Platinum Harper. Appears he did make it into the Base set.

That looks waaay too good to be true.

That or the cards will be numbered to like 2000 killing a lot of the card's value.

This.

There are only 22 names on that list. That would mean every two cases, if printed the same, you would get one of each.

There literally would probably be 2000 of each card. They will be adding other names, or the cards will be worth 40 bucks for a Trout relic auto, since there are so many of them.

They were 740 in 2010, and as high as 1166 last year. That obviously didn't work. Either they will add more names, or 5 million parallels.

Looks like last year's auto jersey checklist was about the same size but obviously the checklist was horrid.

Was it that subset Topps pulled a huge bait and switch on last year (besides the crazy over 1000 serial numbers)?

I believe it was one of the subsets yes. Jhan Martinez and such /1166. Nothing has obviously shown up yet, but the numbers just dont match. Either this was HORRIBLY underproudced (I'm talking like only ~1000 cases) or they are horrifically numbered, or third there are extra names not announced there yet.

Because I have a hard time believing names like Harper, Trout and such are going to be numbered more than 500.
