Default BGS Grading Tipping Point

with improved quality control across all products, 9.5s on higher end products seem to be much more commonplace. sets like topps chrome/bowman chrome/national treasures are pulling in gem mints left and right. at what point does the market begin to adjust for these factors & the benefit in value of a potential gem mint grade is no longer enough for collectors to pay for a submission and risk the item not coming back a 9.5 (if ever)?

I think you see that already on cards where '9' gets no premium, and 9.5 doesn't get nearly the premium a 9.5 would on a UD Black or Exquisite from several years ago (condition sensitive stuff). TCompare that to high end stuff like NT RPA's now where a 9 gets more or less raw value it seems.

Typically a 9 will get you about the going rate as a raw card.

Unless its one of the thicker cards (UD Black, Exquisite, Thicker patch cards) where a 9 is harder to get, a 9.5 could also double the value of these.

agreed. i guess i should've added a bit more to my OP. i was more curious as to whether or not people will start to submit less if the items aren't 'guaranteed' to be a 9.5, and, if so, what kind of affect folks think that would have on the market as a whole.

I think it will always be set based. For example this years Contenders football and nt football with the dark boarders it is tougher than say last years NT basketball. Also I think most people are much more selective on what they send in for grading. Most of us know what an 8.5 and below look like and do not bother to send them in to begin with now. I have submitted only about 30 cards to BGS through the mail and have most returned to me gem since I look them over like crazy before sending them in. I sub a lot more cards for RCR if I have any doubt that they may come back in less than Gem so I am not wasting so much money to send them off.
