Default Mass. Couple Dies Trying to Rescue Dog From Lake

Authorities say a Massachusetts couple boating on a lake drowned after jumping into the water to rescue their dog.

That dog is going to have to live with that for the rest of it's life!

Gosh...what a terrible story. I wonder what kind of dog it was? It seems to me like some small dogs do OK(?) in water? I could be wrong. I have seen those doggie lifejackets that actually do a pretty good job keeping them afloat.

What a shame though...pets mean a lot to their owners -- especially to an older couple that presumably has kids that have grown up and recently moved out.

Anyways, thanks for ruining my week!

I get that pets are like family, but who would risk their life for an animal?

My favorite line from the article, not to make light of people dying, is that the deaths are being investigated. Are they afraid that Fido really pulled them under! and need more time to see if his alibi sticks.

Not sure how you drown (unless in ocean or where currents are rough & swift) if you're a boater & swimmer but this is sad indeed.

I have to agree with this...if you're on a boat and you can't swim, you need a lifejacket. Period.

You answered your own question. Some people love their pets more than their family, their family has done them wrong or abandoned them...

I take it you have never had a family pet.

Did the couple not know how to swim? If not, then why would you jump into a body of water? Sad story.

Why not? If you truly love your pet like I'll assume this couple did and you see it struggling or even drowning, you do what you can to save it.

Maybe the old man panicked, who knows. Would you prefer they sat by and watched their pet just die?

I'm sorry that two people died, but talk about idiots.

I'm going to guess they probably couldn't swin. They should have been wearing some kind of floatation device, and their pet should have had one too. Or better yet, don't get on a freaking boat if you can't swim, avoid water.

Well, I'm sure the man didn't think he was risking his life to save his family pet, and the woman wasn't jumping in to save the pet, she was jumping in to save her husband.

And I would NEVER hesitate to put myself in the man's situation, as our three dogs are definite family members. People who own animals simply to put them in the backyard, or because their kid wanted one, and would "replace" them if something happened, don't deserve to be pet owners.

This is a sad tragedy for their family, but worse things could be said about an elderly couple so selfless that they were more concerned about their dog than themselves.

I fully agree 100 million%!!!! My wife and I have a pit bull/lab/chow mix. She's a beautiful dog and that's our "daughter" until we have kids.

Nope. You do not put your life or any other human life on the line for that of an animal. If you are going to slow down to avoid hitting one be damn sure there is no one behind you. If you are going to swerve, mind the pedestrian.

No animal's life is more valuable than that of a human's.

The story is sad, but at the same time, they should have had the necessary precautions in place both to prevent the dog from going overboard and for personal safety (e.g. life jackets). It's not even a matter of hindsight, but common sense...especially if you can't swim.

That said, being "in the moment" can affect a lot of that.

The old man didn't jump in thinking he was going to die. The old woman jumped in to save her husband. This is a far cry from trying to avoid an animal on the road.

I would jump in after my dog, you better believe it. He is as much family as anyone else. He has been my pal through everything.

I'd do anything for my dog, including jumping into a large body of water if I had to. I don't have any kids so he basically my little furry son .
