This explains it all. Even if he wins a Super Bowl he will be Trent Dilfer. I don't even have to check Dilfer's values to know....

It doesn't matter if he's Trent Dilfer....you sell prior to a superbowl win anyway.

I suppose his prices could creep higher, but for what you have to pay right now...I wouldn't take that risk.

Two losses, an interception, and frightened sellers will start dumping. He's already climbed too much toward Aaron Rodgers in card value when you talk 2005 draft class. At least with some sets.

But who knows?

look no further than last year for your answers.

49ers made it all the way to the nfc title game and smith basically had a turnover free season. his mid to high end cards barely saw any increase, especially compared to other players like Stafford who also did well but didn't fare too good in the playoffs. like others said, it will take a super bowl victory for you to see any significant gains, as compared to other successful qb's

So if the 49er's are say 6-0 or 7-0, you don't think stuff will increase? He'll keep selling strong until they lose. Its not going to take a Super Bowl for anything, he's been exploding all season.

Like I said, all you have to do is look to last year for your answers. To think 2012 will be any different would go against logic. He played great last year, and the team dominated all the way up until the nfc championship. And his prices never 'skyrocketed.' Is there anything I'm missing this year?

I'd just like to add...hobby collectors generally don't like to pay out big bucks for 'older' qb's who took a long time to reach their potential. The older you are, the less your stock becomes valuable in the hobby. ESPECIALLY if you were the number 1 overall pick.

Hell, look at Eli...it basically took him winning his SECOND super bowl last year for his contenders and sp authentics to really see some significant gains.

IMO you have to wonder if they keep the team together, odds are unless a key player goes down they are odds on favorites to win it all. So not only are you buying with the hopes of them winning this year, but perhaps repeating. Alex Smith does not have to do anything fancy the talent is around him to create points. And if they do repeat (long shot) you are sitting on cards that will no doubt be more valuable. Hey he might get SB MVP, nature of this hobby.

For the first time, I can honestly say i am looking at alex smith cards on ebay not to windown shop but to buy lol

the way he is currently performing will not cause his cards to increase...the reason the 49ers are a great team is because of their outstanding defense, clock management, and Smith's mistake free football.....mistake free football does not translate to great performance, it just means that he is managing the game well and not turning over the ball. Those attributes do not draw attention to potential collectors. he either needs to start shifting into the top tier QB level or win a super bowl, only ways his cards will increase in value.

The time to invest in Alex Smith was the offseason between 2010 and 2011.

His cards are pretty high right now, I think its time to sell not buy. He will have to win the Super Bowl to make much money where prices are now.

I'd wait until he has a bad game and maybe prices will dip again.

A little late to jump on the Alex Smith train as many of the folks on here have mentioned. If the 49ers start out 7-0 and he has top 5 numbers I think you will see prices continue to rise slowly, but he is going to need an Aaron Rodgers/Tom Brady like season to really blow up with hopes of a solid profit.

Right now is probably a hold/sell for Alex Smith. He can see further price gains if the 49ers keep this up, though, as less people will think last year was a fluke if his production sustains.
