Question Why Do People Use UPS???

I had two packages sent out on monday from California. One was sent via UPS Ground. The other via USPS first class. The one coming from USPS will arrive today. The one from UPS will arrive Monday! Why do people use UPS?? Isnt it more expensive?? And takes longer to get to your customers. I don't get it.

Alot of stores/companies use it (like Blowout). I believe there is more protection for the buyer (not sure though).

I don't think the average person ships out via ups.

This is not always the case. Sometimes UPS is faster. I run a business and use USPS and UPS and it just depends on each companies facilities and logistics surrounding each area.

Internationally it's faster...
If I were to order a box (and I've tried both), UPS would arrive a few days sooner - going via Hawaii and Australia.

Personally, I find UPS to be much more economical for larger parcels. USPS takes the cake for smaller stuff or heavy things that fit in flat rate boxes.

I have heard that UPS cuts big deals to businesses that use them. I had always wondered the same thing as you. Unless you are shipping internationally where you want to guaranty delivery, why bother using UPS on a standard package? I think once I checked out UPS and it cost like 9 or 10 bucks for something when I could ship the same thing for 5 bucks via USPS. Even if I bought the delivery confirmation and insurance with USPS (UPS automatically includes 100 insurance) it would still be cheaper than going through UPS and it gets there a heck of alot quicker. But yea, that is just for normal people that show up to ship a package, pretty sure businesses get big breaks for using them

UPS is private therefore they can handle their business without red tape. Their shipping tends to be 1-2 days for me in almost every standard delivery case. I believe this is partly do to their system model. UPS drivers never turn left. Seriously, they develop all of their delivery routes based on an algorithm that only allows them to turn right. Because you can always turn right on red the wait time for delivery is cut down tremendously. Overall it is like most things that are private vs. public. If the government is in control of it you can bet it will be slower. My two cents.

UPS has a guaranteed delivery date. USPS can hold a package/letter for up to 2 weeks if they deem it necessary.

I would only ship UPS or FEDEX if the deal is over 300 dollars

UPS you have a better tracking system you see constant updates . USPS you don't have that and sometimes they even forget to scan the package.

UPS you can track internationally, USPS you can't.

Although USPS is good for smaller purchases such as single cards or common Wal Mart Purchases, UPS is more cost effective when shipping heavier items. Plus when I buy multiple boxes of cards, I don't have to lug a heavy box up the street from the post office. Having the convenience of dropping the package off at the door is a biggie for me as the USPS around me doesn't do door-to-door delivery.

Yes UPS for larger packages.

Personally I hate UPS shipping to me is slow as hell and the box always is beat to hell.
More damaged items via UPS vs. USPS for me.

Both of them have their selling points as well as their drawbacks. As for me have a PO Box and cannot recieve UPS packages there so unless I am returing some equipment to AT&T who has a contract with the UPS store I very rarely if ever use UPS.

UPS is great for tracking and reliability. At my work, UPS has NEVER lost a package. USPS? All the time!

Just today, our mailman dropped off a RUG at our place of business. We are in the business of selling TOOLS. Also, the address on the rug was not even on the street that WE are on. That is government employees for you!

Also, personally I would never ship anything that someone buys from me that is valued over $25 via USPS. I always go UPS because I don't want to take the bath if/when USPS loses it or destroys the package and delivers shreds of god knows what to the customer. If I were to ever be able to spend more than $25 on a card you had better bet I would be requesting UPS. I'll pay the extra $3-5 for peace of mind.

As UPSbroker and I will attest, there is no algorithm for right turns only. That quote made me chuckle. I've been setting up and dispatching Browns for 7 years, 18 total at the company, so I think I would know. I also worked at the USPS for over a year. The amount of small package volume that UPS processes on a single day would take the USPS a month. Yes, big shippers get a discount. Why do you think Amazon can handle free shipping? Big discount for them. Also, if you were to take the 200 or so packages that the average brown delivers daily , it would take about 4 PO trucks to handle it. Anyway, if the USPS keeps going the way it is, we won't be debating this issue beacuse there won't be a PO left.

You may or may not know this but does UPS schedule morning / evening deliveries based on past history at the place of delivery? Reason I ask is that the first few boxes/cases I ordered always came around 1-3 PM and I was never home, since then my schedule has changed now nothing is ever delivered before 5:30PM.

I'm a UPS driver and the delivery time depends on the areas that are assigned to my route daily. My residential areas change almost daily, but my business stops are delivered at basically the same time every day. The commercial stops have to be delivered by 5 and ground level residential packages can be delivered any time before the day is over

why does USPS deliver UPS packages?
Also, if USPS tanks, what happens to all the sellers on ebay and other sites? They going to pay the UPS rates?

Some company, either existing or new, would fill the USPS niche I would think.

Since you are in the know could you explain why the usps delivers ups packages as well as ours? We also deliver Amazon. UPS also uses the routes the usps developed. Also, people ship ups for the true tracking they have....the usps is in the works to get that in the next year or so. It would be sooooo nice to only worry about delivering packages. I service 750 stops with an average of 3, 000 letters, magazines, and 30 average packages with 50 smaller ones. This is another reason the ups can be faster. They just have packages.
