Because they own the teams. The owners are the ones who invest money and are taking a true risk. No one should generate more personal income than the owner of a business. If anyone does, they are not doin what they should do for the business owner, which is make them money.

A majority of the owners obviously don't mind his salary. So why should we? If the business owners really wanted to squeak out that extra revenue, they would do something about it.
