Default Collector Stereotypes

I collect mainly over the internet, so I don't get to spend a lot of time at an LCS or card shows. I figures stereotypes are socially acceptable on st. Patty's Day, so let me ask:

What does the stereotypical baseball, basketball, football, and hockey collector look like?

(And yes, I know that all kinds collect. This is just a chance to poke fun at ourselves and other sports.)

You guys are ridiculous. (In a good way)

I was referring more to:

Basketball: Foreign, super rich.
Baseball: Older, crotchety, traditionalists.
Football: Strictly American.
Hockey: Intensely devoted, rabid, the red headed stepchild of collecting.
MMA/Soccer/Tv shows: Probably standing by themselves at the collecting party or lighting something on fire.

New Zealand? Wow. Is there much of an NFL following down there? And something I've always wondered, do they make rugby cards? Love watching that sport down at the pub in town.

NFL has quite a big following. Me and a few mates always take the Monday off work here to watch the Superbowl. And the local pubs/bars open special for the event (Monday they are normally closed). Most people would not have great in-depth knowledge and College football does not get a huge following, but there are definitely a lot of fans. Madden football games tend to be one of the best selling games every year!

NBA is hugely popular (as it is with a lot of countries) and NHL also has quite the cult following. The local Comic shop here gets maybe one box of NFL cards in a year at most so if I want any I have to buy online. They would get 2-3 boxes of NHL maybe and prob a couple boxes of each of the lower end - mid end NBA stuff.

They do make rugby league NRL cards which are quite popular especially with our neighbours in Australia. The best thing about NRL cards is you may get 1 Auto a box at most, so the market is flooded with these. Also "inserts" are still popular and hold good value. They retail for around $150 a box and 95% of the time you would get most of that back if you were to sell the hits. A "scrub" auto has such would sell for around $50 with the bigger names $200-$400 quite easily, and the inserts would sell for prob close to $100 for the lot.

Thanks, something I've always been interested in. I may pick up a box someday.

I think that you should look at the dynamic of the people who frequent card shops.

1991 Fleer Guy: claims to have found these cards in a basement, attic, left in a will, flea market, garage sale, estate auction, etc. Knows that cards "used to be valuable" but now wants to sell his haul to the owner for the low, low price of $100. When he is told that the binders that hold his precious booty are actually MORE valuable than the booty itself, he scoffs at the notion and leaves. Usually smells like stale cigarettes.

No Muffler Guy: This is the guy who watches you open packs and then tells you what he thinks. Usually says stuff like "that'll do well" or "man, you got killed". You know that you got killed or did well but it's nice to have confirmation. It's also incredible annoying to be reminded that you just blew $600 on Fleer Retro with an estimated return of $100.

The Whale: The Whale is the guy who opens thousands of dollars worth and has a crowd around him. He's Mr. Big Time and it's always a party when he walks in.

Retail Guy: This guy just hangs out, doesn't buy anything but is always ready to tell you what great stuff he got at Walmart or Target, usually by pack searching.

The Shark: This guy is always making a play for your best card, while making the trade decidedly in his favor. Watch out for this guy.

The Cherry Picker: This guy will wait until you've opened 15 packs to jump in and grab the hit. Card shop etiquette dictates he waits or asks your permission but he doesn't care.

Mom's got the car running: this guy (kid, hopefully) only has 10 minutes because Mom's got the car running and she needs to get home.

The Good Old Days: This guy can be easily drawn into a conversation about when die cuts where a new innovation and Jersey cards were 1:2500 packs. Boxes didn't cost a car payment and you could open because you enjoyed it, not because you need to his a winner to pay for the rent.

Card collectors girlfriend/wife: She leans against the counter and rolls her eyes as her man blows whatever money he was going to spend on her that night. She is an unwilling participant and is in the store against her will. There will be hell to pay when they get back into the car.
