That's crazy. Imagine if he began his career in the MLB.

Seems like a really nice, cool guy as well.

How about the fact that he might reach 3000 hits in the mlb, which is unreal considering he debuted at what? age 27?

You think he will get 3,000 MLB hits? I was just looking at his stats.

His Rookie Year: .350 BA/ 242 hits/ 56 SB

Crazy good.

Although he technically wasn't a "rookie" in the game of baseball, that is still remarkable.

I could see him getting to 3,000. He is at 2711 now, and I could see him getting to 3,000 in the next 2 years depending on where he is at after this year.

He may be shooting for Pete Rose record. If you look at the way he's built, he's no slouch.

He's more than 1,500 hits away from that. I don't think he'll be breaking that record.

I wish we could have seen him play here for his entire career. I think he would be talked about as one of the all-time greats. Remember as well that when he played in Japan they have fewer games each year. So his hit total would probably be even higher than it is right now combined.

Possibly, but I would think its lower quality pitching which might've helped him. I'm not sure how his BA compares here and there.

He was a .355 career hitter in Japan, as opposed to .320 in MLB but that obviously includes the past 3 years when he's clearly not the same player. He's hit over .350 four times in the US. His season-best in Japan was .385, it's .372 in MLB - not sure you can credit too many of his hits in Japan to inferior pitching.

Edit: Between 2001-10 he hit .331. I know we can't ignore the past three seasons but he turns 40 in October - I think we can cut him a little slack.

No. Lower quality pitching didn't help him. They play way less games in Japan. He got screwed out of at least what would've been 500 more hits on top of what he already had in Japan. Definitely would be making a chase at Petes record right now.

It has been a pleasure and an immense honor to watch Ichiro play. He plays the game the right way. One of the greatest pure hitters who ever lived in my opinion. No doubt he goes to the HOF.

I have to agree. I love the slap and run kind of players. And the way he does it, he is already a third of the way to first when he finishes his swing.

The updated 10th inning of Ken Burns fabulous series "Baseball" touches on your last sentence. Apparently Ichiro is a natural righty but taught himself how to hit left handed so he would be closer to 1st base. Don't know if that is true or just folk lore but that is what was said.

That is 100% true. There have been numerous documentaries and biographies about him in Japan and in the ones I've read/seen they all confirm it. Plus if you look at him when he's in the outfield, you can see he's throwing with his right arm.
Apparently he did so because he wanted to be a few seconds/steps closer to first base.

He's an easy HOF'er already, even without the Japan numbers. He was a star once he threw out Terrence Long in his rookie year. My god what a throw.

I'm talking about Japan and MLB combined.

I'm sorry I must digress here. Yes, Ichiro is a spectacular player- a rare breed in today's game. He plays the right way, is a stand-up guy and in my opinion is a surefire HOF.

However, I'm sick of this combined statistic nonsense, the man collected his 2,722 hit today.

Here's hoping he sticks around for 2 more years and gets 3,000.

I understand your point of view but I think you need to chill, sit back and take it for what this is, a fun little moment that doesn't happen too often. It's just a pretty unique moment in Ichiro's career, nothing more nothing less.

I agree that it is a cool and unique moment-

but putting him in the same sentence as Rose and Cobb as "the only three men with 4,000 Hits" is ridiculous in my opinion.
