Default Change 1,049 for USPS scanned packages...

So if this has been posted, my bad...something new to me this afternoon when dropping packages off (since yesterday it wasn't set in place). So now, USPS can scan your items to be shipped BUT if you want a receipt it will cost $1.30! It only applies to pre-paid shipping items...

Guess I'll let them scan them and not worry about a receipt since it will show accepted once scanned, but still...another way to make up some revenue...

I don't understand. You have to pay for a receipt? Do they still scan accepted and delivered?

seems kinda weird, because they dont' automatically accept responsibility for the package as soon as you pay for it. I haven't had a problem with it personally but it leaves it open for them to say we never got it? how can you confirm they receive it without the receipt.

I dropped 2 case breaks worth of cards one afternoon, probably about 20+ packages. The first 10 were scanned "Delivered to Baltimore" (I live in Baltmore). Then i guess they realized they messed up and rest were scanned received and were properly tracked.

Luckily, it all worked out fine in the end, all the cards arrived and I found out from USPS that even though it wasn't being updated on eBay, they were able to track the package status in their system.

My moral of the story, just b/c you watch them accept it and scan it, doesn't mean they did it right.

Not sure why USPS would "charge" you for a receipt, that makes no sense.

My guess is so they can get some of that money they lose from customers who ship through paypal/eBay at a discounted rate. I haven't had to use the counter service for a first class package in over 2 years, I have no idea what they'd charge, but I'm sure it's more than $1.93.

they don't lose any money by that, they actually gain money because they don't have to pay employees to process the labels, take in the money etc.

Congrats USPS, yet another way to alienate your customers. I went to drop off a Flat Rate envelope last week and was told "Those have to be flat now, with no bulges...". Then she proceeded to tell me I needed to pay the difference for a FR box. So I told her that there were no such restrictions listed when I printed the label and I put the package in the interior mailbox. This is the same PO that won't accept PWE with cards and is the only PO in close driving range.

I remember them saying they were losing money for just allowing customers to drop packages off w/o being serviced at the counter. They said it made more work internally for them and they were taking in more mail then the supposed manpower they had on hand. So then we were not allowed to drop packages off, we had to wait in line for items to be scanned...

This was in my area, so I can't speak for others. It looks like they want to go back to their old ways of allowing packages to be 'technically' dropped off, even though they're being scanned, but if you want proof of receipt it will cost you...I don't really get any of it. As long as my package gets from point A to B, I'm fine with it.

I drop sometimes package in the counter. The USPS doesn't ask money to give you a receive. Unless you have a package weighting more then you paid.

And that is the majority of the problems w/ the USPS. I go to the same PO whenever I need to ship something and some days my bubble mailers are scanned as packages, sometimes as large envelopes. They are always the same bubble mailers w/ the same contents. Heck, some days clerk A charges me for large envelope and then the next day clerk A charges me for package. I have given up even trying to explain it to them. If they could be consistent across their whole business it sure would be nice. Any time I take an envelope into UPS it's the same thing, a large envelope. The USPS clerks at the counter NEVER seem to be having a good day either, haha.

Good thing you took them all at once. Could have been $23 for your receipts

My post office doesn't charge for a receipt either, living in a small town you would be liable to be smacked for doing such a thing.

I guess if Ikea can charge 0.05 for a bag, the post office can charge for a receipt. maybe they have taken a note from banks on charging for everything and anything. Next we will have to buy tokens to wait in line or to enter the building.

sounds fishy and possible that the clerk pocketed the money or just charged you for extra stamps.

edit...

did you also have to pay to get the receipt for your package receipt or was it all on one?

Well my PO will not scan them at all if you get postage online, they say that is a counter service that is not included in the online price. All 8 local offices have the same policy.

Only one worker at my local PO scans prepaid packages that I drop off. The rest just accept them and put them in the bins in the back.

Never really asked why, I just assumed it was laziness more than anything.

Why do you need a receipt? Is it a scan receipt?

Cause simply you can get a purchase receipt in your email from paypal. Also online scan receipts count as front counter scan receipts. So not sure why.

Just spoke to the post office manager and I guess we're just unfortunate here. Its what they refer to as a certificate of mailing. They're charging $1.30 PER item that we want a receipt on. There reason is once its scanned, it's accepted and we shouldn't need a physical receipt since it will show online as accepted.

If we did want the receipt, it would be $1.35/item. Dropped off 16 items today and scanned them, didnt ask for a receipt...

I dropped off 3 items today and received a receipt after having them scanned in. No charges here.

Figured I'd add a photo of the said charges since I needed tracking info on an item....and sure enough, it's $1.30/item and considered a certificate of mailing. You can see the receipt even shows 'Pre-Paid Mailpiece Acceptance' but still being charged for tracking receipt??
