Default non major sport rookie card checklist (showcase)

I have posted this before on the psa board but figured some people here might find it interesting. I grew up collecting football cards. Mostly 80s and early 90s. i got back into the hobby a few years ago and just started picking up rookie cards i never got when i was a kid. I never got into the modern inserts and can't keep track of trillion different sets that come out so pretty much just look to pick up topps or topps chrome rookie cards. Anyways.. with ebay collecting became pretty easy. I could pretty much find any card im looking for on any given day on ebay. It was just a matter if i wanted to spend the money or not. I got a little board with it so I started looking for superstars from sports that are not as popular. I'm not even a big fan of most of these sports but like the idea of getting the "rookies" of the greatest in all these different sports. I tried to get representation from all different sports. its been pretty fun putting this together. Just wondering what people thought of the checklist and to see if i was missing anyone obviouse. popularity kinda trumped actually performance.. like Roddick making list for tennis.. I'm sure there are better but not as popular. Someday I'll get around to adding scans of the one I have. Im close to getting all of these... But I'm constantly adding to it.

Great list!!!

Not trying to start a debate, but just noting a few earlier cards:

Bruce Lee is in several 1966 Green Hornet sets.

Duke Kahanamoku was on a earlier playing card (1909?)

John Sullivan has earlier cards: 1880 Duke Sons, 1887 Old Judge N172, 1888 Spaulding & Merrick N386

Andre the Giant has a 1973 Dimanche/Derniere Heure card (as Jean Ferre)

Ultimate Warrior has 1988 Quaker Oats card, as well as WWF playing cards.

Lance Armstrong is in a earlier USPS card set.

Tony Hawk's SI card is from 1990

For Olympics, I'd include Rafer Johnson, Nadia Comaneci, Olga Korbut, Mary Lou Retton, Wyomia Tyus, Wilma Rudolph, and everyone in the IAAF Hall of Fame who has cards - and probably a lot more if I gave it more thought.

For soccer, everyone in the 18-member International Football Hall of Champions should be in. PSA has the list as a registry set.

For auto racing, A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, Bobby Unser, Cale Yarborough, David Pearson, Bobby Allison, Darrell Waltrip, John Force, Don Garlits, Shirley Muldowney, Don Prudhomme, Niki Lauda, Juan Manuel Fangio (if he has a card), Nelson Piquet, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Sebastian Vettel, Jack Brabham, and Jackie Stewart.

For wrestling, Bruno Sammartino, Superstar Billy Graham, the Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, and Mick Foley (one or more of his characters' rookies).

For other sports, I know Geoff Hunt (squash) is in 1979 Golden Wonder and may have other cards. I have no idea if other squash stars have cards. Steve Timmons is a must for volleyball.

For tennis, women's tennis should be added - Wills Moody, Court Smith, King, Navratilova, Evert, Graf, Seles, and the Williams sisters are musts, and Sharapova's popularity suggests adding her.

Ali (aka Cassius Clay) - 1960 Hemmets Journal (yeah, hand-cut) or 1960 Exhibit Supply, produced over several years, but I think sepia green is considered the earliest, if not the toughtest.

Here are some of the lobby cards. In addition to the US set, there is also a Mexican/Spanish set.

Sorry, I was wrong about the date of the USPS Lance Armstrong card. It was part of the set for the US Cycling Team.

The Impel card is indeed the first card.

Cool thanks for the info. Ill look into some of these. I like learning about new sets and athletes. I'm pretty sure the playing card set with duke Kahanamoku is from the 20s. One was on eBay about a month ago but advertised as from 1909. I'll look into the Jack Johnson and Sullivan cards that were mentioned too. The Ali rookie is a never ending debate.. I decided to go with the lampo. Its just a personal preference but I guess if I had to defend it.. It's the first pack issued card.. That I'm aware of anyways. I also don't like the 1947 Cummings cards or sports casters. I tried to pick traditional sized cards and stayed away from strip cards or caricature cards.

The Hawaii playing card decks were produced over many years.

Here's one with the card dated 1910-1911:

Picked up a Duke Kahanamoku playing card. I've wanted one of these for awhile.

From what I can figure, it was first printed before the 1913 Pan Handle Scrap card, but was printed over the course of several years.

Bumping this up. Thought it was a good list to reference.

Phil Mickelson Diamond Card not getting much love, or is it not an "official" rookie card.

Those are great PC cards (I have a few, but they're in pretty rough shape).

I also have a stack of his cards from the 1974 Yamakatsu set - might start a Bruce Lee collection thread once I get everything scanned.

Collect what you like don’t treat it like a investment could drop in price just as fast as they are cardboard.

I started pursuing a PC close to the list in the OP before I knew Eagles post existed. Pretty fun project, most cards were very affordable for years, but many have exploded in the last couple months, just like everything else.

Really fun mix of super rare to mass produced and endless discussions over what is a “Rookie Card”.

This is the earliest one I see. But just from a PSA pop report search, can’t be sure it’s his first.

Regarding

UFC/MMA
Bruce Lee 1974 Yamakatsu Way of the Dragon

Bruce Lee appeared in the 1966 Donruss "Green Hornet" TV series of cards as "Kato", so if the 1974 card is Bruce Lee in "The Way of the Dragon" as a movie card, as opposed to a card depicting the actor, Bruce Lee as Bruce Lee, then this series may qualify as pre-dating the Yamakatsu release.

In relation, there's also some other Green Hornet cards, including a deck of playing cards with photos that I believe PSA acknowledges and grades that came out in the 1960's.

Maybe Roddick is a typo, and should be 2003? Pretty sure there was no 2001 Netpro release.

2001 NetPro Andy Roddick ROOKIE & 1st Officially Licensed Tennis Autograph Card!
In 2001 we revamped the NETPRO brand and signed Andy Roddick to a contract that enabled us to produce the first ever officially licensed autographed tennis card. The autograph features a bold signature and is limited to 999. This beautifully designed card was an instant hit when initially released. The regular unsigned variation has a print run of 10,000.

The list is also missing the Mia Hamm SIFK's card.

It would be interesting to start just a SIFK thread. I recently went through a bunch of SIFK cards (entire sheets actually) I saved from when I was a kid and a good number of the players/sports depicted likely have no other card made for them. Of course some of the names are pretty obscure which is likely whey there's no other cards made of them. I suspect Sports Illustrated for Kids likely made the only known trading card of a number of athletes which is pretty cool.
