Default What was your favorite non-sports set of 2014?

I think Adventure Time was my favorite set that hit this year. It seemed to be a set that artists had a lot of fun making sketches for, and that showed with all of the quality breaks posted on this site and on eBay. I hope Crypto puts out a 2nd set in the near future!

Runner up would probably be Guardians of the Galaxy. I loved the movie, and RR is probably my favorite character right now, so this set was really fun to chase. My only nitpick is that the base set didn't have enough RR or Groot cards (they only pop up in 3 of the 90 base cards). Other than that, this set was a home run!

New to non-sports but have to say Perna studio's Halloween set was probably my favorite, great sketch cards! Also the Hobbit Unexpected Journey - pulled some great autos and sketch cards (glebe brothers Gollum)

#1 Star Wars Chrome Perspectives
#2 Guardians of the Galaxy
#3 wacky packages chrome

All 3 of these sets were really a lot of fun and challenging to build base sets and also gave me some really nice hits. Looking forward to seeing what 2015 gives us!

Sons of anarchy. First release, has the bigger main characters, has most others. Has extra hits, printing plates. Just a well done release IMO. Wish they would have been able to do the same with breaking bad.

American Horror Story is my favorite. Love the show (not so much this season, but the 1st 3 seasons most definitely) and just love the card set. Wish there was a Jessica Lange autograph in there of course. I'm not into sketch cards at all either, which appears to be a large part of the non-sports scene.

Can't wait for Asylum to come out.

Still having fun with the hobbit. Simple fun. Cost effective.

Perna Studios Classic Mythology II set was my favourite of 2014, great sketch cards and a pretty nice base card set. Can't wait for the Classic Fairy Tales release in 2015.

Trevor, kudos for starting this thread! Together with the "best active this gen sketch artist" and the "Top 5 Showoff" threads, it forms a perfect "review" opportunity for the community!

My top 2 sets for 2014 are Crypto's Adventure Time and Perna Studios' Classic Mythology II!

I TOTALLY agree with you that Cryptozoic somehow worked some kind of magic with A.T. and brought the VERY best from the majority of the contributing artists! Among else, it gave me the opportunity to add one of the BEST sketch cards in my collection, "Finn Soaring with Parachute Jake" from Natasa "Tansa" Kourtis! A sketch card I'd NEVER acquire if it wasn't for you, Trevor, and for Kyle!
THANK YOU guys!!!

And although this is NOT the proper thread to show, here's Tansa's beatiful card:

Classic Mythology II was an equally stunning set. I won't say it was a surprise, since the Pernas have mastered the "magic" I was referring to above and they have managed to present even more amazing artwork with every new set they release! Yet, it's one thing to admire the scans and a whole other when you have the opportunity to add these *wonderful* tiny pieces of artwork to your PC. And that's the reason why I have to pick CMII over Halloween, since I got to pull and then pick 2 other beautiful sketch cards from Babis "Babisu" Kourtis and Soni Alcorn-Hender, which you can better view in the Top 5 Showoff thread!

All in all, a GREAT year in my mind, even if I haven't been so active in adding sketch cards to my collection!

Yiannis

1. Walking Dead Season 3 - I didn't like the idea of a 2 part release but a big fan of the show and pulling a redemption in both part 1 and 2 didn't hurt either!

2. Guardians of the Galaxy- Prior to the movie release, I had pretty low expectations of the movie as well as the card set (sounded like it would be only 1 auto per case but turned out to be closer to 2 to 3) that quickly changed once my first case arrived.

3. Hobbit: Unexpected Journey- An average of 1 auto hit per box and 3 sketches per case made this set a 'gamble' but overall quality content made this a great release.

Under the Radar:
Continuum Seasons 1-2 Not too many big names in the autograph set (except Rachel Nichols and Lexa Doig) but almost all the main cast members signed and turned out to be a fun crack when it turned out to be 2 autos and 1 wardrobe per box.

Pena Studios Hallowe'en was my definite favorite. Also really enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy and Garbage Pail Kids 2014 Series 2.

I'd say they were each the best for their sub-genre of non-sports.

Nice pickup Yiannis! I am glad I was able to direct the card you wanted to its rightful owner... You!

My favs in order:

1. Breaking Bad - Some nice variations and really love the Los Hermanos cup cards were a nice to touch.
2. Downton Abbey - elegant show that was reflected in the set release
3. American Horror Story - creepy show that you get to relive in cards. Who wouldn't want a wardrobe card of the super creepy rubber suit from season 1.....haha!
