Default Anybody ever had a PC quest derailed by endless hype and rising prices?

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of AJ McCarron.

I had been accumulating his NT RPAs pretty steadily ever since release, and have his higher-end Immaculate and Flawless cards.

My goal was to get at least 2 of every parallel, and to get about 25 of his /99 RPAs.

It started out well enough, with sales of the /99s costing me about $40/card in April, and about $50/card in June. No problem, the minicamp hype train hadn't started yet. I bought a really nice gold /10 for about $85, and a couple silvers for $60-65ish.

Since then, it has been a crescendo of epic proportions, with every parallel basically doubling in value. Earlier tonight there was a black /5 RPA on ebay with rough centering, and it sold for $302.99.

What was a rather inexpensive hobby has become ridiculously expensive, and there's so much demand for his stuff that my offer of $160 for a gold RPA 9.5 was literally laughed at, and sold off-ebay for around $180 within minutes. This, for a player who has never even taken a preseason snap and is behind a QB who has a huge contract.

So, have you guys ever been collecting someone but some preseason hype articles roll out, and then instead of battling 1 or 2 guys for the player's cards, you're battling dozens of them?

I literally held off on posting this until after the jersey# 5/99 RPA sold, it's that tough in the streets. Had my max bid at like $267, thinking certainly that would get it. Sold for $271 via snipe.

I want to hear the sob stories of others. Boo hoo.

Honestly at this point, I would sell everything I had of him and PC someone else. Or collect him again after the year if he doesnt see any time (which he probably wont).

In all likelihood this is probably his peak. I'd buy more into your of other guys at this point.

Yeah I am seriously considering it.

Maybe hold back a couple nice ones and let the rest go.

I would recommend selling what you have as well. Make some money, put it into other PCs. Buy the cards back later, if you feel like it still, when the prices are lower.

I had a bid in for that NT Black as well....definitely did NOT expect it to go for $300+. It's getting out of hand for him lol. I feel you on the McCarron situation unfortunately LOL. Thankfully I got the 3 NT RPAs when I did...

I'm actually debating selling the ones I have as well, including the NT RPA 9.5...

Garoppolo cards are already sky high they may come down if he has some bad games at the beginning of the season if he plays. If he has some good games look for his prices to be found on the space station.

I wouldnt worry about it... like you said its "hype" it will die down soon enough and they will be affordable once again. If you arent in it for "collecting" purposes by all means sell now while they are going for a decent amount.

Sell now. You will be able to buy them all back for 1/2 the price (or lower) next offseason. I do recommend keeping any rare or extremely hard to find pieces though.

When I started collecting Dysert, his stuff seemed to just keep climbing. I had a Platinum red refractor auto /5 I sold for like 185 because it was more than I had into it and it allowed me to grab some other stuff...2 years later picked up a /5 for $22 bucks!! It was a big risk but certainly paid off. I wouldn't dump anything less than /25 though as they really don't pop up as often after a year or two

But my "Holy Grail" was his exquisite RPA 1/1. I have all other 1/1s (except NT to include chrome super, both contenders 1/1s, SPA RPA 1/1 etc) wel the squizz 1/2 popped up and some ungodly reason my max bid of 400 wasn't enough and inlost it a few months back. It was like a shot in the gut lol but won't stop or slow me down

Don't focus on just one or two sets. You will get frustrated in this process. It's good to go after other type's of his cards. Have you looked into Five Star? Some nice cards at reasonable prices. Keep what you have now. And look into lower tired products. Chrome,Valor,Prime?

There's a nice one on COMC numbered to his jersey

For sure sell now. You shouldn't be upset you should be happy that the prices rose so much because you can cash in huge. Keep 2-3 that you really like, like the immaculate shield.

Was going to say this exactly.

If you keep the big cards they can still make a big jump if he pans out, and while I don't know a ton about AJ I can't imagine his chances of success as a starting QB are that high. (not making a knock on your PC guy, just going based on his situation)

Gronk. I heavily collected Gronk during his rookie year and offseason before 2011. My PC included a rare BGS 10/10 TC Rookie Auto. However, his prices jumped like crazy and I got out. I've picked stuff up when he's been hurt from time to time, but I've not been able to grab some of the stuff I had back in the day...

Did you buy them to collect them or to make money if he became a starter? If your whole intention was to make money on them sell now and take your profit and don't look back.

Damn Russell Wilson had to win the starting job from Matt Flynn! Everybody was buying up flynn after the 6 TD game he had with he packers before signing with SEA and I was just trying to PC my College teams latest draftees.

Got some decent pieces before his prices skyrocketed, sold most to afford other cards.

Donte Moncrief prices were already sky-high before he had a chance to show much on the field. Even with a decent rookie campaign, his cards are still high. His Cracked Ice card still can't be had for less than that of a T.Y. Hilton Cracked Ice from 2012, and Hilton has been a two-time 1,000 yard receiver and a Pro Bowler. I just cannot justify the price point for Moncrief. Everything is based on potential, which isn't uncommon in the hobby but when it happens to your guy it's a bit frustrating. I get that he's a Colts WR and has Luck as a QB, but that WR core is loaded with talent. It's not as if Moncrief has a strong chance to put up huge numbers with so many mouths to feed on that offense (Andre Johnson, T.Y. Hilton, Philip Dorsett, Dwyane Allen, Coby Fleener, Frank Gore, etc...). I'm guessing Moncrief has 800 yards this year, which still doesn't justify spending $200 on his Cracked Ice RC, IMO.

I am 100% with you on Russell Wilson. Wanted to get as many WI uniform Wilson's, but stopped halfway through the season.

I also try to collect cards i like from most Badgers. Most of the WI RB's have been misfires so it was pretty easy but if Gordon comes out of the gate big, then I will have to quit that as well. It does make it easier since I like to collect Badger player in the Badger uni.

Josh Freeman, circa 2010/2011? Don't tell me I'm the only one who got reeled in, hook, line and sinker on that incredible waste of talent.

If you reply with...."last one on eBay sold for this"...then you should have bought it on eBay.

From a hobby perspective, I didn't get hooked in, but from a fantasy football perspective, he was a complete disaster after that one really nice season. I was stunned at how quickly his stock plummeted.

FF has influenced what teams I avoid during case breaks. I will never buy into any Raider, Brown, or Redskin rookie...just because of what i have witnessed in FF and how the team's front office works. As much as I wanted to chase RG3, my gut told me to avoid him like the plague.

I was big on ODB coming into the draft and I really wanted to get a something of him. Decided since I love chrome I was gonna go after the rainbow and then he's blows up a week before chrome release. Now it's just a dream to have been holding onto his rainbow before he broke out.

Nick Toon. Every off season around training camp his stuff goes up because he gets hyped up, but then they under use him during the season. Hopefully this season will be different, simply because I want his nicer cards to pop up so I have a chance at them lol.

I agree with this. I was buying him and Nick Toon for pretty much the same price up until a month or 2 into the season; then Wilson's stuff skyrocketed and became too much.
