Default First BGS Submission (Through LCS) Help Needed

So today I stopped at my LCS to pick up a few cards from grading. Well over a month ago I submitted a Schwarber 2014 Bowman Draft Auto as well as a 2013 Bowman Draft Refractor Auto of Austin Meadows. Before submitting the two I ask what it would cost me after all the fees, the owners response, "I'm not sure until I get the two back... shouldn't be too much".

Like I said earlier, today I picked them up (Schwarber got a 9/10 and Meadows got a 9.5/10) and he tells me that it's an $80 fee for the two cards. I questioned to fact why it was so much and all I got was a "I don't know" and a "I'm not trying to make any profit" and I kid you not, the owner said "You're making $200 anyways".

Well overall I'm extremely upset with my LCS visit. I'd appreciate it if you can help me answer these questions...

1. What should it cost me after fees to get the two graded?

2. For those of you who get cards graded with the help from your LCS, do they tell you the cost before hand?

3. What would you say to your LCS owner (who you have bought and sold to for many years nonetheless) if he did something like this?

4. Is my LCS owner trying to make a profit off this?

The line about not knowing the fees until he got them back makes no sense to me. Unless things change for group submissions, they require payment before grading.

Did he submit only your two cards, or were they part of a group submission?

Judging from the rough timeline, he would have sent for 20 day service. Even if he sent only your two cards, that should only cost $52 including Fedex Ground return shipping and insurance. Most likely it should be much less.

Did he atleast give you a free jar of vasiline when he took your money? I wouldn't step foot in that place again. He should have know the cost down to the penny if he does this often.

That's pretty accurate I would believe. I would say $70 would be a fair amount. Obviously he is going to make a little something for his time and effort.

1. What should it cost me after fees to get the two graded?
With a few cards, and 2-day it would be like $60. That would mean submitting less than 12 cards, and I doubt that's the case here. Realistically it should be in the $20-30 range based on a 10-day+ submission as there are typically deals available all the time.

2. For those of you who get cards graded with the help from your LCS, do they tell you the cost before hand?
My LCS doesn't do this, but simply based on smackvay's group submission's here, you should be able to give some type of estimate. I mean, your LCS owner should know if he's sending out ~20 cards or 100+ cards.

3. What would you say to your LCS owner (who you have bought and sold to for many years nonetheless) if he did something like this?
Say you feel like the cost was too much, see if they can recalculate, and reimburse the difference. Otherwise, I would at the very least never submit anything through them again. Tough to say never do business again if this is the first occurrence of anything remotely shady.

4. Is my LCS owner trying to make a profit off this?
Seems like it. No way it's $40/card even if it were 2-day.

Thanks guys for the comments so far. By the way it did take me 60-ish days until I got them back if that is a big difference.

Bottom line, if he submitted only those 2 cards on your behalf you were atleast mildly overcharged. If he submitted them as part of a group submission, you were grossly overcharged.

Either way, you can use it as a learning experience and hash out all monetary information on deals beforehand and avoid this in the future.

They were submitted as just the two, not in a group. What would you say is a reasonable price?

The fact he never told me a price disgusts me still.

The receipt says $56. Does that sound right for two cards alone that took well over 50 days to get back?

It's $30/card for 2-day. But it goes all the way down to the low teens I think for a 45-day. So either way, you got shorted. If the turnaround time (you giving to him and getting them back) was under a week, then it's not horrible. But almost two months for two cards at $80 is ridiculous any way you slice it.

If he did 45-day, that's $24 plus shipping/insurance, so say $45-50. With a $56 receipt, looks like a 10-day with shipping and insurance. Maybe he forgot? But if you have the receipt, why is it $80? That's a pretty big 'service fee'.

The fact he couldn't give you a price before hand was a red flag.

Sorry for that robbery. I would never go back to that store.

If I'm not mistaken the BGS site has it at $11/card

$11/card for 45-day. I mentioned in my edit above $12 (remember $1 for auto).

I built a 20 day online submission for the 2 cards that you mentioned which includes Fedex ground shipping and insurance for $400 and it came to $56...so yes, you were overcharged.

I would love to see his invoice that he received from Beckett because the grading turn around and shipping method back from Beckett would really dictate the price of the submission.

So if I go back there to pay, what would be a firm price to give the owner?

Where are the photos and the grades? Did you at least score on the grade?

So you received your cards after or before the 20 days since you first submitted them?

If you would have done this submission on your own, it probably would have cost you around $60...I don't see why he needs to make $20 on your submission.

I think the lesson learned here is that you should look for a trusted member on this forum that does group submissions...I am sure someone here could help you out with that. That would really save you a ton next time.

There are scans of the cards up in my bucket. Schwarber got a 9/10 and Meadows got a 9.5/10

Like I said because it was a service for you I would have expected to pay $70 if his actual total was $56

My guess is that his main focus is not on submissions so he overcharged you. Which is fair on his end but maybe a bit too much.

I just built that submission as an example right off Beckett's site.

Beckett.com

20 day service means 20 business days if I am not mistaken...so if you account for shipping the cards there, 30 days to process your cards after taking into account weekends/holidays and then the week or so it takes to ship them back to you, it really could take upwards of a month and a half for the submission.

I would say $60 sounds fair. If the receipt says $56, then I don't know any other reason you would have to pay much more than that. Maybe a couple bucks for a 'service fee' but I don't think anyone is paying $10/card on top of the normal costs to have someone else submit it for them.

Sounds like he is robbing you... It only costs $10.00 maximum per card. Gotta add shipping into that figure though. But if this was a group submission, which I'm assuming it is through a LCS, that would be the maximum cost. If you were sending them in for minimum grade only, the most expensive it would be is $14.00 per BGS 9.5 and $3.00 if they did not meet that requirement. Again, this is for 2 week grading (10 business day), and a bulk submission and/or card shop rate. You need not look further than the BGS group submissions on this very website to get a rough estimate of the cost.

The line about not knowing is bs. The line after that regarding how much you're making is extremely insulting. You should not only take offense to this, but you should report your card shop to BGS, and post their name so that no one deals with them, ever.
