Sounds to me like the package was opened and contents may be missing.

Because they sometimes open media mail to confirm that the contents are something that can in fact be sent by that service level.

That is odd. I mean if they open it and misplace the package you'd think that'd be on them to find it. Not just refund your postage cost. I would ask if you got insurance, but I'm guessing you didn't.

It appears what has probably happened here is that your box was opened, poorly resealed and is now just an empty box.

Had this happen once and what happened is the label got detached from the box enroute, they never did find the item and I ended up having to refund the buyer in full.

Nope you have to prove DELIVERY just shipping it does not mean you are protected the item has to get delivered. Even if it says delivered it does not always mean the buyer got it. If it does not at least showed delivered to the buyers zip code then you are responsible.

Why are you putting 2 labels on packages, that could be some of your issue as well.

Also Media mail is completely searchable by the USPS. Did the item qualify for media mail, if not that could be part of the issue as well. Never heard of them doing it that way but its possible.

I put a label with my address and a separate one with the other address . I then put tape over both of them . no way they came off unless someone peeled them off

and in the past I have always won the case as long as I ship it to the correct address.

I just got one, it was a pretty cheap item. Buyer didn't even message me. I sent him one and he said he'd been talking with the post office.

I told him he should have contacted me but I thanked him for being awesome. I refunded him and told him if I get the item back I'd send it to him no charge.

Don't comic books have ads in them? If yes, then no you can't send them media mail. I still think what's happened here is that your media mail package was opened (as lots are), then resealed poorly, resulting in a currently empty box.

Correct, comic books are not eligible for media mail because of the ads in them.

MEDIA MAIL SERVICE

Media Mail packages may not contain advertising. Comic books do not meet this standard. Books may contain incidental announcements of other books and sound recordings may contain incidental announcements of other sound recordings. In accordance with standards in the Mailing Standards of the United States Postal Service, Domestic Mail Manual (DMM), Section 170, Media Mail packages must have a delivery address and the sender’s return address and are subject to inspection by the Postal Service™. Upon such inspection, matter not eligible for the Media Mail rate may be assessed at the proper price and sent to the recipient postage due, or the sender may be contacted for additional postage.

All packages sent using Media Mail are eligible to be opened by a USPS employee to confirm contents. Any package found
carrying material that is ineligible for Media Mail rates will be sent back to the sender with a possible fine and other postal
charges included.

This could be part of the issue.

Ebay might have elected to refund, but they are not required to do so. Just look on these boards there have been many situations where the seller was forced to refund because it was not delivered, despite being able to prove they shipped the item.

Seller protection policy

If a buyer reports that an item hasn't been received
If you ship an item within your stated handling time and provide tracking information to the buyer before you or the buyer asks us to step in and help with a request, you're protected.
Tracking information needs to include:

A delivery status of "delivered"

The date of delivery

The recipient's address

Signature confirmation, if an item has a total cost of $750 or more

ok so if this is the case why would the notice give me the option of returning the package back to me or send to the person that paid for the books

Although comics can't be sent using media mail I don't think that's your issue here.
