Default Interesting Grading News

Here's what's happened to me over the last 3 month regarding a DC Presents #26

I picked one up for roughly $150 in NM shape. I was thinking once it arrived, I may have to press it and then submit to CGC.

When the book got here, I was in shock. The book was virtually flawless, and needed no pressing. This is rare when you buy things online as they typically NEVER arrive in advertised shape, or take damage, etc..

This one was a beauty, so I submitted it to CGC and decided to wait for my grade. After 4 weeks of sitting in their system, CGC tells me they won't grade it due to "overhang".. This was a new term to me, I'd never had a book be rejected due to this, so I looked into this issue of "overhang"..

Overhang is when the cover of a comic book is larger than the interior of the comic book, either in its entirety or just a specific part. CGC will not encapsulate, at their discretion, comic books deemed to have too much of an overhang.

So they kept my money, issued me a credit and returned the book. When the book got back, I looked at it again, and yes, there was a little overhang on the front cover, but the book so was gorgeous I had to try again, so I sent it to CBCS.

The graders at CBCS decided that they would grade this book and I got the grade in last night.

9.8

WOOT! :eatit: Should be in next week. I'm probably going to keep this one as it's not a cheap book, nor is it easy to get 9.8's on it. Plus, I'm a DC fan.

Just thought you guys should be aware of the dreaded OVERHANG as it'll prevent books from being graded, and sending to CBCS is no guarantee as it's up to their discretion as well. I just think their idea and CGC's idea is a bit different as to which books they'll grade or not.

Can pressing cause overhang or is it the opposite with some poor pressing jobs where the pages extend beyond the cover?

Pressing will not cause it if done right. The covers are a certain length and you're not putting enough pressure to physically change the length of the paper, just flatten it and fix minor dents/issues. At least I've never experienced this during pressing. My book was not pressed, so it came from the factory that way.

So it's okay for interior pages to "overhang" by not vice versa? ...cause I've seen plenty of graded books where the interior pages reach out past the cover..sounds contradicting.

Not that I would try this but I wonder if the cover could be trimmed?

I'm sure someone could try it, but they'd detect that and you'd get a purple label on your book. If the cut is relatively recent, the transverse of the edge will be "whiter" in colour than the other edges.

Indy, did your book have overhang on all 3 edges?

I sometimes notice it on the right edge. I'm guessing CGC won't encapsulate it as the edges will become dented over time in the slab?

Looking at the other forums it appears that cover overhang has become somewhat of a problem. Somehow books are being damaged in the encapsulation process.

No, just the outer edge. Top and bottom were fine.
