Default Sick to my stomach: USPS lost a VERY high end package

UPDATE: Another package lost in Glendale, CA. See post #83 for details.

Hi Guys,

If any of you happen to come across these cards please let me know.

They are a Michael Jordan and LeBron James 2006-07 Ultimate Dual Auto Jersey serial numbered 3/25. Pictured here:

And a 2004-05 LeBron James Black Diamond Auto pictured here:

For a little bit of the miserably painful background, the card was shipped 2 day priority mail to Houston Texas 7709X (blanked out to avoid giving away the location of my buyer who has been a tremendous help in all this and is a member here on blowout).

The package was out for delivery two days after shipment and was then subsequently "Forwarded" to Houston TX 77073 post office location. The item went out for delivery to a street address in 77073 that was completely night and day different from the PayPal shipping address of the buyer. USPS takes a picture of the package upon delivery and my package clearly stated the intended address. They also scan where the item is delivered to. USPS basically proved out for me that they misdelivered based on their scanning information. The supervisor at the post office said that she would send the carrier back out to retrieve the package. He was not able to. My buyer also went out to the address (a 30 minute drive and inconvenience for him) and asked the family who lived in the home for his package. They stated they never received the package and even brought him out to the mailbox showing him that there were no packages here.

What happened here is simple if you don't care to read the long version above:
1.) USPS employee stole the package (my theory after it was suspiciously forwarded)
2.) the family still has the package and doesn't want to return it because a.) it's clearly valuable and b.) it's a crime to open mail not addressed to you.

I'm not sure what the outcome here will be as we still have a long road to go down.

I'm hoping for the best and expecting the worst. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks for reading,
Matt

I know the cards are irreplaceable but im sure you used insurance given the value. Why would USPS not give you the money back when clearly it was misdelivered.

I am hearing more about this forwarding option and think it is a way for the mailperson to theft the packages, I also heard USPS set a special department for employee theft investigation unit, look for it and make a report. I hope you end up getting the cards and everything turns out ok.

Absolutely hate this for you and your buyer, but I am surprised at the above from the USPS. I've never heard of them documenting the process in such detail, and since they clearly documented how they f***ed everything up, you should have a very solid case for your insurance claim. I'll keep an eye out for both and please keep us posted.

Thank you guys so much for the support and kind words. Regardless of the outcome I will be taking a break from buying/selling/trading for a bit.

As for insurance, it was underinsured. I will not disclose the amount to anyone but the buyer because that's my issue to live with. I'll still file a claim to recover whatever I can. I'm a smart kid but that was really stupid. Needless to say if I get back into this at some point I will be fully insuring any material package. I would highly suggest anyone in this game of ours to do the same or take the easy route and ship with fedex. This is a terrible feeling and should serve as a public service announcement.

I know how you feel, I recently lost a package (albeit a ~ $200-250 Stephen Curry Penmanship /25 card so not the same level of magnitude). Basically, my USPS carrier said they delivered (tracking shows delivered)....but it wasn't delivered to my house. It was an item returned by the buyer and I didn't insure so now I'm out $200. Either the carrier took it or delivered to the wrong residence (latter is likely) :/ It stressed me out until I accepted the fact that I wouldn't get it back. With that said, I hope you don't give up and I hope you get it back. Wish you the best

sucks that they screwed up. for anything over a certain amount, I work make sure it's insured and signed for. That way there's nothing to really left to chance. hope that USPS makes it up to you.

Ouch, hope it all works out for you man...... Just had a package that was to be dlvd to me that was about 45 miles from me and the USPS marked it as undeliverable. The seller ended up getting a note saying it was opened and contents were missing. Shady business by USPS

I was on that same boat (USPS tracking say out to deliver and not did deliver). That basically ended my interest in the hobby. I am still on break on buying cards because of it. Hopefully your cards turns up!

USPS insurance is a joke at best. I hate to be that way, but ive been had by the process and ended up paying out of my pocket to fix it for everyone involved.

Why wouldn't you have shipped this high end package via fedex? I see a lot of people here use fedex for high end shipments?

Matt, This is very upsetting. Hope everything works out. Good luck. These horror stories with the USPS are happening way too often.

Those people probably have your package. At the very least, we will all be on the look out for you. I'm a little sick to my stomach as well considering the value of these cards.

The main downside to FedEx (and anyone else can certainly correct me if I'm wrong) is that you CANNOT insure collectibles for over 1,000. Thus, if it's a huge piece, you're assuming all of the risk. I've heard of members purchasing third party insurance on FedEx/UPS shipments, but I've yet to do my own research on how the process works.

If you want to read a story about the USPS doing an amazing job from start to finish (minus the PO workers who swiped the cards...) through a terrible course of events, look up Eric's (ebitz) thread about his stolen merchandise.

I would guess you purchased thousands $$ in insurance on this? I think every lost and stolen USPS package had high insurance attached to it. Seems to do more harm than good.

terrible story and a tough lesson learned so sorry OP. USPS has been truly more and more incompetent lately

i am located in NY and had sent out a package to a person in CT on the 4th of December.
that package did not arrive until the 31st. ::track link below::

December 4-31 WILD RIDE

the package arrived the label and package was perfect. the address was perfect. the buyer and I were flabbergasted by USPS.
