Default Should the NFL change the value of FG's ?

Interesting article on SI...

Against the Grain: In defense of the four-point FG, a long shot rule change | SI.com

Personally, I'd be in favor of an even bigger change...

50+ yds = 4 points
35-50 yds = 3 points
20-35 yds = 2 points
<20 yds = 1 point

This would almost ensure that teams go for it when its 4th and goal inside the three yard line, and would make it much more likely that teams would go for it when its fourth and short inside the 18 yard line.

Thoughts?

NO

Leave the rules alone, stop messing with FG and kick returns. To me it's part of the game.

The only possible FG rule I think I'd get behind is:

No field goals from within the 3yard line.

What would be the point of that? Then they just get an intentional delay of game penalty and kick from the 8 yard line.

I agree with the opening post.

Imagine a team down by 3 with times running out.
Field Goal kicker comes out at the 50 yard line and nails it for the win.

Why does everyone feel the need to change things that are and have worked so well? I don't just mean football but everything. The NFL does not need more games or more points etc. the game is great, tweak rules for safety and be done. It appears the league wants to alter the kick off rules each year, at this point just place the ball on the 20 and be done, instead of dancing around the idea of eliminating the return itself.

My thoughts exactly.

Seems like half these ideas for changes come out of boredom, same as most businesses.

This sounds like something the XFL would have done.

Delay of game inside the 5 = Loss of down?

I'm not advocating for an actual rule change. Only saying that the only FG-related change I might support would be one that encouraged teams to go for it on the goal line.

Don't owners have to agree to these rule changes? I just don't see how owners would agree that you have to go for it on 4th and goal from a short yardage. From an offensive perspective, teams can literally lose on the play being forced to go for a TD when only down 2. A team drives all the down for a gw fg, but nope they did too well on offense so have to go for it and can't kick the fg. On defense teams could be down 4 and the opposing team would go for it and make it a 11 pt game (gameover) or more commonly, take the Fg to keep it a 1 possession game. Now the defense (or was) can get a TD and Xp to tie. Even if they got that stop (which typically is rewarding), they have to drive 97 yards for a TD, which is significantly harder. I don't see how it would really benefit anything to an extent teams would be accepting.

Dear NFL, please stop messing with this great game! You are turning it into a two hand touch league!

I don't want people down by 4 taking a 40 yard sack to tie the game
