My self-imposed rule's:
If I catch it in the air - it's mine. Tough break kid. Regulation MLB balls are expensive. If I pick it up off the ground, or drop it/pick it back up - it's the closest kids. |

I bring a glove to the game (I only go to Minor League games) to protect myself in case of a line-drive (and to try to catch a ball obviously). If a ball comes to me where I am sitting, I will try to catch it or glove it.
I'm not going to run after a ball that is beyond my area. That's where the kids come in...it's all theirs. If the ball comes my direction, I'll do my best to get it. My rule is that if I'm lucky to get a ball, I'll keep it. Any other balls I get, will go to the kids. I only want one...that's it. The rest go to kids in the area. The most baseballs I have given away is 3 in one game! |

It’s easy to tell if a ball is being thrown to a kid. If it is, the kid should get the ball. If not, it’s fair game. 99.9% of us don’t seek out baseballs at games and catching one is a cool moment. I’ve caught two - one Matt Kemp BP ball he threw into the crowd and one HR I caught in the air. No chance I was handing either of those to someone else.

In late 2016 at Comerica Park in Detroit I witnessed an Indians fan reach out and grab a ball thrown up by the right fielder (can't remember who it was.. Probably JD Martinez).. Problem is it was clearly meant for two young kids who were asking for the ball after he caught the last out of the inning, the player smiled and nodded as to say "got you kiddos" and tossed it up.. Indians fan (grown man in his twenties) reaches in front of the kids and grabs it. They were with their mother only so it was even more of a punk move.
Needless to say the entire right field section was on this guy, but he wouldn't acknowledge any of it, until a woman said something to him and he turned around and said "shut up f'in b**ch"... When that guy made his exit to leave the stadium my cousin and I watched him get the living poo beat out of him by like 5 dudes in our section and his buddy stood by and just watched like "yeah not backing you up on this one buddy". I wanted so bad to take a swing at the guy myself but getting to watch the beating might've been even more enjoyable to be quite honest. Someone in the crowd recorded it but I never could find the video on YouTube. Lol.

Depends on the situation. If a kid muffs a foul ball or it's a toss up or generally took no effort to get my hands on, heck yeah it's going to a kid. If I catch a screaming line drive with one hand, I earned that ball and I'm keeping it so I have a story to tell about the bruise on my hand.
Ballhawks are pretty ridiculous. Can't fault the guys for getting seats in the right spots, we can all do that. But pushing people out of the way for a ball that 99.9% of the time isn't going to have historical significance is going overboard.

I'll put it this way....I'm 49 years old....I've been to hundreds of MLB games....I've NEVER caught a game ball (gotten more than a few in PB).
If a ball is headed my way, I'm going for it just as hard as I did when I was a kid. |

I had a Hample-like experience at the Cardinals game last Saturday.
My girlfriend and I had tickets in the left-field bleachers and we got there early to watch batting practice. While we were sitting in our seats, a 50-something year-old guy was amongst the sea of children in the front row trying to snag a ball. Anytime a ball/player came remotely close to the bleachers he would begin yelling, "Please! Please! Sir! Please! Sir! Sir! Please! It's for my 107-year old great-aunt! Please! Sir!" While that was annoying enough in and of itself, what bugged me the most was his constant shifting and squeezing through the crowds of people trying to follow balls and get into a better spot. I don't care how much sentimental value receiving a batting practice baseball has to you, but it's certainly not worth losing the respect of every person within eye-sight of you. |

I question anyone over the age of 13 who brings a glove to a game
And Hample is on the spectrum right? I’m not going to bust his balls (no pun intended) Last edited by boston12; 04-09-2019 at 11:07 AM. |

So, Hample just replied to a comment I made a few months back when I said I lost respect for him after I saw, what at the time, was a 5000 dollar fee for him to go to a game with you and help you catch balls. He wanted to clarify its only 1000 (plus travel expenses) and he doesn't need my respect to enjoy his life.
Well, thank God. I was worried. |

It doesn't matter if it's Hample or some other clown, they just better stay in their lane.

Interesting that this thread was bumped up. I was at a MILB game last week.
There is this guy that always sits on the far end down the left field line (that section is always empty)...around 50 years old. He has a glove, he's at every game. He goes after all foul balls down the line, asks the players in the bullpen for foul balls, great...good luck to him! Now he starts chasing after balls with the kids around those empty seats. The parents heckle him, he gets upset, then security comes over and KICKS HIM OUT! First time I have ever seen anyone kicked out of the game for chasing foul balls in the stands! I had to chuckle...if only this happens during a MLB game! |

Seems reasonable to have multiple discussions about him, as he is a hobby related subject, plus several of those were not originally related to Hample's habits (one mentions that he is getting a card and another asks what you'd want for a specific ball he happened to get).
If only there was just 1 Mickey Mantle or T-206 thread ever, right? They aren't worth a second thought... Quote:

Who cares. If he wants to waste his life doing that go ahead. Unless he personally affects me I really don’t care at all.
If I’m at a game and catch a ball, I’ll toss it to a kid. When I was like 14 I caught a foul ball Jason Bay hit. It was awesome. I have no clue where that ball is today, but I still have the memories. If I can give that to a kid, awesome. I also don’t wear jerseys with other men’s names on them. Team gear is enough, without crossing over to what I consider odd territory. To each his own. |

Everyone on this board has a hobby... collecting cards
Hence, I don't judge the hobbies of others- unless that person's behavior harms or interferes with other people trying to enjoy a particular hobby For example Buying baseball cards at target - totally fine Pack searching before buying - definitely not ok catching foul balls at stadiums - totally fine Being a loud overly aggressive nuisance ballhawk - definitely not ok |
