Correct. But the listings come and go. Haven’t seen anything actually sold on eBay. So just watch out.

Not saying the cases are tampered with (they’re always BBCE sealed). Just that I no longer would consider buying them given the source.

It is fraud however you slice it (pun intended).

But if it turns out that grading companies and consignors were knowingly involved (as opposed to just incompetent) that will be a whole new ballgame. Can't hide old emails from the feds. That's what I'm waiting to see.

Roger that -- exactly how I interpreted it. Thank you for your guidance. Much appreciated.

It seems to me there are three possibilities.
1. TPG's are really really really really really really incompetent.
2. Certain high volume/high profile submitters have figured out how to steer their cards to individual graders who give them preferential treatment, including minimal scrutiny of altered cards.
3. At the highest level (i.e. Orlando, Murray and Foreman), TPG's have encouraged preferential treatment for these submitters.

Pick your poison.

My opinion is ALL 3.

I got turned off from the hobby in the 90s because I always felt like a mark/chump at shows. Dealers were total tools and it always felt like someone was trying to pull one over on you. I came back to cards as an adult and the continued exposure of all of these dbags doing even more sketchy stuff is turning me away again. Thanks for taking a fun hobby and turning it into a cash grab for dbags!

When I was going to a lot of local shows in the 90s it seemed all I would hear at every table was how this product and that product was "drying up" and was way undervalued at current prices.

FWIW, I recently found out that, thanks to BODA, while showing off my baseball cards collection here on blowout, my 2012 Topps Archives Bryce Harper RC auto PSA 10 was trimmed. I had purchased this from one of the members here on Blowout (I contacted him but never responded....hmmm I wonder if he knew...). The BODA who pointed out the trimmed evidence told me to contact Betsy at PWCC who last sold the card in auction. I contacted Betsy at PWCC and told her the situation. She responded within 30 mins and told me that after her looking into the matter, she agreed that the card was compromised and my card was eligible for the refund program. I have to say she was nothing but courteous and professional. In fact, they sent me the shipping label right away for the card to be sent to them. They received the card on Friday afternoon (the 13th) and I just received the refund directly into my bank account today. I am very happy with the way they handled the situation and gave me some comfort that at least PWCC is taking the right approach to rectify the mess with trimmed cards. So if any of you are holding what seems to be trimmed card(s) based on strong evidence I strongly recommend that you contact PWCC right away.

They still are. In my personal interactions at the National this past year, nearly all of the dudes dealing in high end were complete pricks. Not buying my $1,000 cards? Get lost. Not bringing me stuff to sell or trade? Scram. Have questions about things? I'll sit here on my phone and ignore you. My most pleasant interactions at shows are always the guys with low-mid end stuff and there to have fun. Not the guys that are always on edge worrying about how much profit they are making.

I wouldn't say I know Evan but I've shared enough digital space with him that I felt comfortable busting his balls. I got to see a lot of his pickups that others didn't get to see and I got to follow his progress on some of the sets he was (still is?) working on.

This makes ZERO sense. I've seen him make massive vintage buys and completely lament just how close a card came to being in X condition. You don't advertise that if you're planning on altering the card later to improve it. The guy's had like a million dollar bounty on a specific '88 Fleer basketball sticker in PSA 10 for years. Why doesn't he just trim up a bunch and send them in?

Are there sales directly from his account or are all the sales from PWCC/Probstein/consignment/auction houses? Because a much more plausible explanation is that Brent has been telling customers "I think I can get this to bump. Mind if I try?" and then cracking his customers cards out and having his (highly suspected by now) in-house doctors trim them up and get the altered grade.

I don't see a financial motive here and I know for a fact that Evan is a "true collector" so something here isn't jiving.

Arthur

ETA: Brent then turns around and says that all the owners of those cards are the ones that did the trimming, he just unwittingly submitted them to PSA. How can they prove otherwise? Brent was just an innocent pawn stuck in the middle of this giant conspiracy. That's how he's able to name so many card doctors at the beginning, because he knows whose cards he chopped up.

I didn’t miss my mark. You can’t pin everything on Brent.

Let’s see your supporting evidence.

You are one of the smartest guys on these boards. I mean that. What has been laid out here is 100% fact. It’s been known for a while and was a matter of time. This is one of those sad moments when you realize an acquaintance you trust/liked is dirty like the rest of them. He does like cards. Most of them do. He started with good intentions. Most of them do. Ultimately, he bowed to money and greed, like they all do.

This one might take a while for you to digest, but it is reality. Also, his responses here (and it IS him) tell you all you need to know about the guy.

My supporting evidence of what?

I'm asking an honest question. Is the scenario I presented possible? Has he sold trimmed cards through his personal accounts?

That is a HUGE jump in logic. Here is a $20k card, please resubmit.

Ok great, I am gonna risk $19k with a pair of scissors, AND I sell on flat fee, not % of sales, so I will assume that risk without seller approval?

It is possible but like the old Calculus Functions, it terminates towards Zero. I would rather play the lottery than buy your scenario odds

That very may be the case. We didn't have sleepovers and take baths together. I'm just saying I got a chance to get to know him as a collector and a person. His responses here are EXACTLY what I would expect.

We're talking about a guy who listed a 1988 Topps Bo Jackson PSA 1 on eBay with stuff in the title like "Pop 1" "Rarer than the Wagner!" and stuff like that for like $100,000 just so he could eff with people. It was glorious. The responses he got from people were amazing and he would just keep effing with them. I was crying.

I don't think he gives a gravy boat full squid squash what the people in this thread think.

And to add, that purchase was sandwiched between card purchases, not purchases for scrapbooking supplies.

Arthur,

In this world nothing should surprise anyone, especially this hobby
my friend.

It is unfortunate.

Yeah, something deeper or personal going on here for a guy who is otherwise very logical. I’m sorry your hero is a criminal like the rest.
