Final JK5 Ryan update - A/P, Foil, artist signed, and now player signed (arrived today).

Now back to the P70s - in for a 3 pack today. Is the right side of Bellinger spelling ROY for his 2017 rookie of the year or just coincidence?

can somebody explain the fascination with the Artist Proofs?

because i don't get it.

i always thought AP's were like rough drafts weren't they? like a first draft, a second draft, a 20th draft, whatever, until you got a final print.

but these all look the same except for a border and numbered on the back.

am i missing something?

Absolutely. No comparison in my mind, and I tend to gravitate towards the more cartoony releases of these projects.

The Acuna looks to be really getting pushed.

The Acuna works really well with the crazy colors of the 90 topps design. I'm very curious to see how his second turns out.

It's a close one, I like the Pedro a bit more, but that may or may not be influenced by my favorite team being the Red Sox.

On OMA

After gazing at today’s offering for awhile, there’s a 50% chance today’s OMA card is not only the greatest P2020/P70 card yet but will be the greatest ever.

Yeah, I immediately thought of it as a Mother’s Day card but I was only half right.

It’s A VALENTINE’S DAY CARD.

It’s a blissful Americana red-white-blue highlighting the red photo of Cody Bellinger as a valentine to all his fanboys everywhere. But more importantly, it’s OMA’s generalization of Bellinger-as-athlete as a comment on the love and idolatry fanboys give to their hero-athletes through the purchase of photographic representations.

Post-modernist art at its finest.

Very sly. Very very sly. Bravo OMA.

.

Topps is using a term that does not apply to this product. Its a Silver Frame and shrunken artwork, not a proof. Its just marketing.

An actual Artists Proof is an initial impressions of an artworks reproduction to ensure its being made accurately and is usually signed off on by the Artist and Printer, and also its not meant to be counted into the print run of the created artwork.

There is likely an actual artists proof, or a printers proof for the base P70 card, the "AP" card, the Gold frame card, AND the Foil card. But those are probably discarded or filed away at the shop.

Actually the Gold Frame card is probably just the 52nd card on the sheets with the Silver Frame cards and then one is grabbed to get the gold frame slapped on it.

Really depends on what their next cards look like. Will they all be a similar theme or will they really be all over the place.

Yeah Artist's Proofs have been terminology in cards for a while. Just a name for a parallel really.

boo....that sucks.

i took art class in high school, so i was under a different impression of what an AP was, so that's why i didn't understand what Topps was doing.

plus, most of these are probably done on computer, so maybe like you said, the prints right, but then wouldn't each be different?

like the lettering or colors or something?

I'm with Zonk - the words should mean something, and do in the actual art world (and these are cards made by artists....). But that fact that the name has been used for parallels, has been pointed out in this thread numerous times tpp.

There are also "photographer's proofs" in stadium club that are not actually proofed by the photographers.

We are all still friends though, no matter which side of the debate you fall on!

Modern printing is accurate enough today that prints being off registration are rare. So you get a real clean print each time. But they would still be printed up in multiples on one large sheet and cut down, thats where centering issues occur, when cut.

some people are trying too hard to like the OMA Bellinger card. Someone else was spot on when they said it looked like Christmas wrapping paper.

The Pardee Acuna is awesome; I’d put it in my top 5 so far, along with Distortedd Pedro, JK5 Vlad, Siff Strawberry, and Styles Aaron (honorable mention to Ermsy Tatis)

Are we sure that is CRAOLA and not Crayola?

Unfortunately topps hasn't advanced cutting beyond having some guy do it before he drinks his coffee

Am I the only one who finds the placement of the bat in the Bellinger card unsettling? Acuna card is lively and weird, still probably not getting it. Clemens was a neat pick but that card does little for me. Have to stay under 500 of these somehow.

Pardee Acuna is Nickelodeon, GPK, Predator, and Venom rolled up into a glorious neon nightmare. It's terrifying.

Distortedd Pedro is the big head Sports shirts from the 90s: So dang playful with the chain and the curls, the food, the lip. Bam! Hit ya with the big eye and you just can't stop smiling. Joy.

Hopefully from a kind soul here who bought extras to help out a fellow collector.
