This could be worrisome for long term, it could hinder his power and affect him his whole career. We don't know.

It could also just mean he misses some time this year, and fine. Or maybe just misses this year with the surgery, and recovers fine and is an all star again next year.

If he threw out his arm I would be more okay with him being just fine.

The opportunity cost of sitting on a tatis heavy collection could be immense.

I mean, that $3000 you paid for his 16 chrome auto or whatever combination of psa 10 base rookies you have could be dead weight and lost opportunities elsewhere over the next two years.

Better flip them for Wander, Witt, and Kelenic. As someone posted above, the hobby moves on rather quickly. If Tatis misses significant time, the money will shift to the next OMG GUARANTEED HOF Rocket Ship to the Moon, etc.

Very few people have a solid grasp of opportunity cost. They just look at the current cost of "x" and the future value of "y". Not the length it takes to get there, and what your money could have done elsewhere during that same period of time. Someone got cranky yesterday because I mentioned that was one of the biggest mistakes people make in this hobby. Take out emotions and learn the bolded term above and the returns will follow.

It’s all fun and games when everything is going well.

But I’m realistic about my tatis stash and trying to warn others about the risks of “collecting”.

It can get ugly quick, especially at his current valuation.

The real world and real money is not a bed of roses.

I've never owned a nice Tatis card but this is a real bummer. I was (and still am) hoping MLB is able to promote the new big 4 in a way that will finally bring some new younger fans to the game.
Tatis is exactly what baseball needs right now and I'm hoping for a speedy and full recovery. Also hoping that the Pads can ride the rest of their very capable roster into the playoffs anyway. The Darvish/Snell/Musgrove additions will obviously be a huge key.

I bought two tatis cards last year before the season, I can't say I collect to invest because I never end up selling anything.

To put it simply--Tatis will never be able to stay healthy

Just read Mondesi was out six weeks with same injury. Hopefully we’ll get some news today.

Tatis card money will shift to Soto/Trout.

That is unfair. The kid is young and has a bright future. The same could be said for Ken Griffey Jr. It seemed that he spent nearly as much time on the bench as he did in the lineup.

This.

He's going to be fine as a human playing baseball.

His card prices on the other hand will not be fine if this is something that keeps him out of the lineup for weeks at a time.

Two words for ya. Kris Bryant. Remember him? What has he done in his career? ROY, MVP, World Series Champion..... Shoulder issues killed his hobby hype. Issues linger... He'd play fine and have to sit out a couple days. He even changed his swing to prevent pain in his shoulder. Wouldn't let go of the bat when he swung. I think he might be back finally. He's going to need 2 great years to get the hobby back on his side.

As a player and as a human.... Tatis will be fine. Hobby hype on the other hand.... Once it's gone... It's not easy getting it back.

Chalk another one up to the "next Trout" list....

overpriced from the jump, only multiples MVPs could sustain pricing

Heck of a ballplayer when healthy, Padres look very average without him

.

Agree with all this. The good news for Tatis is that the Padres are just entering their contention window. So assuming he comes back healthy, he’ll have the opportunity to shine on the big stage.

I wanted to send my condolences to Tatis Sr and the Tatis family. It's a shame to lose a young one at such an early age. RIP.

Griffey didn't start having injury problems until he was 25...he had already played for 6 years.
