I feel like I'm becoming a cheap ass the more my net worth grows when it comes to cards. When I started this 11 years ago it was to buy cards I couldn’t afford as a kid (rare 90s Frank Tomas). At the time I rarely spent more than $100 on a card. Now everything I want seems to be $250-2500 which is “real” money now and it’s removed a lot of the fun around it. Percent of income wise it’s probably lower now even with increased prices, but my nerdy cpa tendencies kick in when I go to spend $500 on a stupid baseball card.

That being said, we hit some financial goals recently and my present to myself are 2-3 cards that will be $1500-3500 that I’ll eventually pick up. Even though I’m considering them a reward it’s still damn hard to pry the money out of my account for them.

My wife also doesn’t really like to travel. We are more of a long weekend family to Nashville or something… especially with youth sports. We don’t have some giant trip to Paris that is on our bucket list. We just don’t

Our condo in FMB is fine because we have a property manager and even that stresses me out when a hurricane comes through

Now let’s be clear… majority of my money gets invested into the market and/or RE since I work at a developer

But I’m not sure what else to spend my money on other than cards. I have a lot of big TV’s in the house to watch sports… and I definitely pay for convenience with my poop guy, landscaper, etc…

This is way more than you care about. I just figured I’d reply

When people dream of having a $5-10M net worth this is the exact life they dream of

Also not that anyone cares… but my kid does not carry around $25,000 worth of cards in a Zion Case (and crazy respect to the kids that understand the social media game and do it themselves)

His best card is worth maybe $100

I’m the only one that gets the good stuff until he gets a job

To clarify since the hobby is weird in 2025

It works for me

Sometimes I wish I wanted to spend $10K on vacation… but it just doesn’t appeal to me. I totally respect people that want that experience. I’m just meh

But I’d rather shoot down to FMB and buy an Elway RC PSA 10 (currently what I’m after. Haha)

My favorite thing about being more comfortable is going out to eat and not worrying about the price of the nicest steak. Its a big change from ordering water and splitting a meal. My wife jokes about me never spending money on anything (outside of the hobby) other than steak. I have literally planned a trip from NC to Houston one weekend because of a steakhouse. I drool just thinking about it. (Taste of Texas) We did add in a baseball game, zoo, and museum while we were there. But the steak is what got me there.

Sign me up for this in concept

I’m not a steak guy but I’d happily pay for a long weekend to get a great burger or whatever

That’s more my style than a car, boat, or watch

And that leaves money left for a 4 or 5 figure card sometimes

But to each their own for sure

Whoah, dude! You are going to have to explain this! I was willing to ignore this whole thread until now.

You pay for a “poop guy”?!? WTF is that? What convenience are we talking about here? Actually, on second thought, I don’t want to know…

I literally had a meeting about this today… well not about this but it was BS’ing about this

A guy I was meeting with just spent $20K on a golf trip to Scotland. He did it up as much as you could. It sounded amazing. He had the best time

I love golf

I have no interest in doing that. I just don’t

I’d rather buy a $10K card and invest $10K or take the long weekend to Nashville, Chicago, and whatever….

It’s super interesting to me (seriously) how people spend money

Cards and game tickets are the same category in my budget, so for me it's a question of whether I want a card of Ohtani or to go see him play in-person. I figure the cards will always be out there so I've been treating my family/friends to games more often since he joined the Dodgers.

I get it man. If I remember right you're a CPA? If so I truly think our brains are just wired a little different. It's as if we're hyper sensitive to what we value. My wife and I can drop $5k on a trip without thinking about it but when I see a shirt I like that's $60 I look at it as if it says $6000.

I am

I haven’t worked in public accounting for 20 years but I still have my license. I’m the CFO for a Real Estate Development company

I just like to buy what I want to buy. There are things that make no sense to me (cars or watches simply as an example… Acura and an Apple Watch are fine with me)

And the same guy at office that drives a Porsche can’t believe I own a $20,000 sports card

That’s the beauty of it

Honored to have gotten one. I've had quite enough of the corporate life. I'd rather retire 10 years early and do other stuff that is actually interesting, than spend what I could on cards and have to keep working.

I like to buy cards more than other items myself. I have a rav4. Don’t care about cars. I’ll drive it til it dies.

We did drop 13k on a euro trip for the wife’s 40th this year. I hope that’s the most I spend on vacation for a long time.

I find myself less willing to spend big on cards here in the last year or two. My gut says prices are inflated and due to drop.

But that’s based on nothing and they seem to keep rising somehow.

Weird

I love cards and cars, but my taste in "fun" cars is too expensive for something that goes down in value. But some of the best times of my life were being a car guy. Rarely find a tighter knit community that car communities.
