Full disclosure I grew up in Texas as a huge football fan. Basketball is my second favorite, baseball being third. I didn't get to go to any Major League games as a kid, but I've been to 4 as an adult including one in Wrigley Field. I definitely love it more in person than on television.
That being said I feel like you guys on this forum are baseball aficionados and might be better informed to speak on this than me. I watched one of Zack Hamples videos today. I've heard about him before. This got me thinking about ball catching at games in general. These are merely my thoughts on the practice. These are not my fully formed etched in stone opinions, just thoughts I have. Would love to hear from you guys what you think. 1. I know there is one school of thought that it's ridiculous for grown men to chase after balls at a game. For someone like me that didn't grow up as a kid going to major league games I think it would be pretty darn cool to catch a homerun or even a foul ball at a game. 2. I would think most reasonable human beings would agree no one should be knocking kids, elderly and disabled people over just to get to a ball. 3. I know some people think you should always toss any ball you catch to the nearest kid. Should that be an unwritten societal law? 4. Should MLB just change the rules that any balls caught at ballparks are MLB property and should be turned in immediately to security or an usher? Or would this take away the enjoyment and tradition of attending a game in person? 5. Are guys like Zack Hample and other ballhawks jerks that ruin it for everyone else and should be banned for life? Or should they be commended for studying their craft, learning the best spots to be in, and exploiting loopholes? 6. If you catch a record setting homerun ball is it just the good old American way to keep it and get as much money as you can from the player that hit it or in an auction or does it deserve to go back to that player for free? Like I said I don't have strong opinions one way or the other. Would love to hear what you guys think? |

Don't have time to answer all points, but will on this one:
3. I know some people think you should always toss any ball you catch to the nearest kid. Should that be an unwritten societal law? I know I'm in the minority, but I think this should be a no brainer. Just the smile alone on some kid's face is worth the effort of giving up the ball if you're an adult. |

Hample ruins it for others.
In addition the fact that he signed up for Tinder and swiped on guys and girls, As well as other straight and gay dating apps to sneak into the Fort Bragg game shows the level of his issues.

Zack Hample should be banned from every ballpark in MLB. He took a fun random event at a MLB game and tainted it by making it a business. The entire term Ballhawk to me means jerkbag who thinks its some sort of skill or vocation. It's not. I've seen him push children, elderly, to get to the ball like he's making a big play.
In truth, he's being a Richard. I get that he hands the ball to a kid (sometimes), but I would prefer some random spectator to have the moment. It makes it more special. I once witnessed a man catch a foul ball and hand it to his elderly father he was sitting with and the older man was reduced to tears by the gesture. That is special. Nothing special about what Zack Hample does. If you think he would hand some record ball to a kid, I have a bridge to sell you. Some may feel different and that's fine, but I truly can't stand him. |

I punched an old lady AND a baby in their mother’s arm to catch a foul ball. Millennial, snow flakes are the only ones giving mlb balls to kids who don’t catch them. Sets a bad example

Unless it's a home run that I catch in the air...I'm giving whatever ball to a kid.
It's not that hard to catch BP balls and be in the right place for home runs...if that is your only purpose in life.

Want to have fun?
Here is his website... https://www.zackhample.com/lists - he keeps track of EVERY ball he gets. Sometimes 20+ on a given day. Just click the year below. Many dates are highlighted in blue and takes you to a youtube video of that day. You will see that he does give most of them away to kids or adults who would want one. The number in ( ) are game balls. He doesn't count a ball as a game ball if a player throws it to him after an inning or the ones that get tossed up in the crowd that were foul balls on the field. He only counts balls that flew into the stands off a bat. I've watched a few videos and his constant screaming to guys on the field asking for balls seems to be edited out of the videos LOL. He even has a rigged glove on a string to snag balls in bullpens. |

Hample is a tool kit.
Giving a baseball you catch to a kid is cool, but no one should feel obligated to give those up. I've gotten a few between MiLB and MLB games, and I typically give them away, but sometimes I keep them. Nothing wrong with either scenario as long as you aren't taking the baseballs meant for kids.

It's kind of weird for a grown adult to be into catching baseballs but people here spend tens of thousands of dollars a year for cardboard pictures of 18 year olds. People like weird things and his is better than a lot of people.
He claims that he never runs people over. I haven't seen him ever do that but I doubt he would upload that so who knows what the truth is. Unless a ball is thrown up specifically for a kid or you lean right over a kid to catch a ball, I don't think there should be an obligation to give a ball you catch to a kid. It's a nice thing to do but not doing it doesn't make you a bad person. Forcing you to turn in balls would be an extremely dumb thing for the MLB/teams to do, especially considering the way they've been dealing with the players recently. Baseball needs all of the fans it can get and treating fans poorly isn't smart. Unless he's doing things that I haven't heard about, I don't think he's a jerk. He's dedicated and goes to extreme lengths to get baseballs but he's not hurting anyone. The Fort Bragg game was probably his most controversial incident and I don't think that was bad. I'm sure I'm in the minority but I don't think what he did was horrible. If the military gave 2 tickets per person selected, it should be up to them to choose what to do with the tickets. The guy who brought him along shouldn't lose out on part of what he won because his girlfriend didn't like baseball. If it was limited to military members that would be one thing but they were clearly allowing guests. If the MLB/military didn't want him there they should have done something to keep him from getting in. I don't see any issues with selling baseballs to the highest bidder but that isn't really what he does. He gave Mike Trout his first homerun ball for free (although obviously before knowing what Trout would become) and traded A-Rod his 300th hit ball for mostly a donation. What he got personally was less than 1% of the value he would have gotten if he auctioned it. I know I'm more supportive of him than most of the rest of the hobby. I don't feel strongly either way but most people hate him. We're only seeing one side of the story though so it's possible he really is a jerk and is good enough at social media to hide that.

I have never caught a ball during an actual game, the only one I have was during BP and it was my second game, you sure as hell bet as a 27 year old I kept that ball. I could not go to games as a kid living in New Mexico, so being able to go now in the last 7-8 years I will take any ball I catch and keep it because it means that much to me. I am making up for lost time as a kid.

I have never actually caught a foul ball but I have gotten several toss ups from players and a few from the ball boys but I would never cut in front of a kid or push them out of the way to get one. But some kids overdo it every game I go to there are quite a few kids who still get one and are screaming for another one. They are like the seagulls from Finding Nemo that say Mine Mine Mine. Also if I did catch a record ball I would for sure turn it over to the player no doubt about. I met Hample last year and he is a busy guy but I didn’t see him knock anyone over or anything. He was nothing but nice to me but I don’t know if that’s because I’m a female who is a die hard baseball fan. True I think the Ft Bragg thing was bad though

1. I know there is one school of thought that it's ridiculous for grown men to chase after balls at a game. For someone like me that didn't grow up as a kid going to major league games I think it would be pretty darn cool to catch a homerun or even a foul ball at a game.
I'd love to catch a ball at a game. Would be a great souvenir for me. Adults and kids should have a chance. 2. I would think most reasonable human beings would agree no one should be knocking kids, elderly and disabled people over just to get to a ball. Most reasonable people should kick the ass of someone who does that. 3. I know some people think you should always toss any ball you catch to the nearest kid. Should that be an unwritten societal law? Up to the person I think. 4. Should MLB just change the rules that any balls caught at ballparks are MLB property and should be turned in immediately to security or an usher? Or would this take away the enjoyment and tradition of attending a game in person? No, they'd probably just auction them off anyways. 5. Are guys like Zack Hample and other ballhawks jerks that ruin it for everyone else and should be banned for life? Or should they be commended for studying their craft, learning the best spots to be in, and exploiting loopholes? Not sure how they get all the balls but if they aren't near their seats then I'd say yes. Give everyone else their fair chance. 6. If you catch a record setting homerun ball is it just the good old American way to keep it and get as much money as you can from the player that hit it or in an auction or does it deserve to go back to that player for free? I would love that kind of ball. If I was lucky enough to catch something like that I don't know if I could give it up. I wouldn't sell it. I might trade the ball for the bat he hit it with. Equal trade I suppose. |

I caught two balls at games in my adult life. I gave one to a kid. I gave the other to someone who I suspected had some issues (I don't know the current "right" way to say it). To me, it's a baseball. I don't know what a new one costs but I am fairly certain that I can afford one if I need one. |

I never went to a MLB game as a kid and probably came the closest to a ball (a HR) at my first game. If a ball found its way to me, I’d keep it. But I wouldn’t solicit a ball from anyone like ZH does.

I saw him at the Home Run Derby in 2017 in Miami...came off very entitled and full of himself. Was getting really angry with the ushers, as they did not let him (or anyone else) go down to the outfield seats without a ticket to that section. That meant that he had to stand in the concourse behind the seats with everyone else that was watching BP.
He was loudly complaining to everyone around him the whole time. Just seemed like a little brat to me. |

I think the whole Hample thing is luck. Also, I don't go to baseball games with a mindset of catching a baseball. I go to games to watch baseball and enjoy it with friends and family. If I wanted to catch a baseball I would bring my glove and ball and play catch in the parking lot.
