Because for some people the standard of emergence is based on what we’ve seen from Soto, Acuna and Tatis at such young ages. So, of course, any 21-year-old who ISN’T yet a consistently dominant offensive force must be a bust.

Some people are concerned about his weight, which I think is understandable. But I‘m pretty sure that much of the dismissiveness comes from folks who may not have much experience watching baseball and/or don’t have much historical perspective.

I’m actually working on a post that will lay out when the game’s best players (mostly of the past 30 years) emerged as legitimate stars. For instance, Vlad Jr has played two seasons before his Hall-of-Fame dad even took one at-bat at the same age.

He looks like a bust at $1000+ BGS 9.5 chrome auto prices.. because those required a .310, 35+ HR line to sustain. He hasn't come close to achieving that through 180+ games.

He still looks like a solid major league player. There are a lot of those available at $50 chrome auto prices. He basically looks like the same player he was last year.

Honestly, I'm still bullish on him.. I think he's going to hit .300, and the plate discipline and lack of K's is nice. But the buy-ins still strike me as completely unreasonable. If I'm buying in at $650-700 now for a BGS 9.5 chrome autograph, I have to bet on a pretty drastic turnaround next year.. if he hits .270 with 20 HR again, then we are looking at 2.5 years of middling production, and I'm not a fan of trying to catch a falling knife. The youth is going to offer some upside for several more years, but then I''m risking getting into trying to capture that post-hype sleeper/bounce-back action, and I don't want a $700 basis for that... I can just chase guys like Bellinger for a similar price point if I want to do that.

The good thing about Vlad's cards is that he started out as a $100 base auto and then climbed based on what he did in the minors and a whole lot of hype.

Crazy how people can pump pump pump when a player A is off to a great start and pile on when player B is are to a slow start. But if player A slumps its hey he is the same player he was when he was hot and vice versa for player B.

The "detractors" in this thread don't think he's going to be on the bench anytime soon, they just think his prices are way too high for what his ceiling is. Because of his defense and mostly DH'ing he can never win an MVP unless he turns into Ted Williams at the plate.

But, because he's had so much hype and his prices did skyrocket for a bit, it seems like his prices can probably stay irrational for longer than someone who otherwise didn't have the attention and past hype cycle. And even if he improves again next year and winds up with a 130 wRC+ or something very good, maybe his prices can at least stay where they are even if he's sitting at 3 career WAR after his first 2 and a half seasons. I'm so interested to see where the inflection point occurs where his prices start diving if he turns into a consistent 130 wRC+(very above average hitter), 2-3 WAR guy.

I'll preface this by saying that I'm a big Vlad Jr supporter, think he is the recipent of unfair criticism, and has MVP potential not too far down the road.

That being said, I agree with a lot of what you said here. There's a part of me that thinks that his hype was so high, maybe even outlandishly high, that even if he goes onto be a 150 wRC+ guy with 5-6 WAR he still would be looked upon as a bust or as never living up to the podium he was put upon by many "investors"

I have to ask: Did you watch Vlad this year? He had a rough first week, was strong throughout August, struggled the first half of September, then really turned it on the last couple weeks.

Sure, he was inconsistent, but that’s baseball—and such fluctuations are amplified in such a short season.

Perhaps it would be informative to look at his September numbers and compare them to Tatis’ September stats. Would you conclude Tatis is an incompetent hitter? Then look at Vlad’s August stats. Do they reflect the performance of an incompetent hitter?

This presumably resulted from being such a big person and repeatedly exerting extraordinary torque on his body with that powerful swing of his. However, it’s quite the leap to predict that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will suffer the same fate.

But if Vlad makes the production leap at 22, as Prince did, and approaches 300 HR by the age of 30, then that means we will likely have spent the past decade watching a superstar. What happens from there will be Vlad’s path—not a re-enactment of Prince’s.

They’re both chubby guys with exceptional hitting skills and a good bit of fanfare on arrival. As far as comps go I think it’s fair. Could he be better than Prince? Absolutely. With some dedicated conditioning I think he’d look more like Nelson Cruz.

2020 was meaningless for most guys, especially a 21 year old that got about a 1/3 of the AB's as he normally would to prove himself. Everyone else can keep chasing the next 16 year old but I like the pedigree and future performance potential enough to keep at it.

The Covid delay derailed him as did the shortened season. He looked GREAT in Spring Training and going back home to grandma killed his hard work.

I’m still super high on him and I’ve gone almost exclusively all in on his cards. I agree, 2021 will be make or break for him hobby wise. My own feeling is that he saw first hand how being lighter works for him as Dante Bichette even said that as he lost weight as the season progressed, his numbers (and more importantly the quality of his swing) improved. This may be another round of being able to buy his RCs on the cheap and cash in next year when he breaks out.

He's had so much hype that even with another poor year, all it would take is a hot month or two at any point in the next few seasons for his cards to rip higher. But one thing that he's already past is the "so young" narrative. He's only got 0.7 WAR going into his age 22 season. Trout, Soto, Acuna, Tatis all had already made sizeable impacts by that point in their career. Plenty of room for a HOF career but hobby wise there is a big difference between 20 and 22. Doing damage in the majors at 19-21 is super, super special. Doing damage starting at 22 is a tier below.

So, is this debate just going flare up every few weeks until the next season starts?

Vlad played 60 games as a 21-year-old. Why would anyone write him off after that? We might as well write off Tatis for his .714 OPS in September—he was a bum for half the season.

While it wasn’t smooth sailing the whole time, Vlad had some very impressive stretches—including the last couple weeks of the season. Two weeks isn’t that long, you say? Neither are the couple weeks when he struggled. All numbers, slumps, hot streaks, etc., are magnified by the season’s truncation. Had it been a 162-game season, Christian Yelich could’ve ended up an MVP candidate. We’ll never know, because the normal course wasn’t allowed to play out.

We all know that players have slow or fast starts, and slow or fast finishes; that they have slumps and one or two standout months over the course of a six-month, 162-game season. And we all should know that, just because Juan Soto is showing otherwise, that most 21-year-olds aren’t anywhere near their peak capabilities. (Yelich, for example.)

And did you know that Vlad is younger than his legendary dad was before he had his first major league plate appearance?

And have you thought about why the Blue Jays kept Vlad in the middle of the lineup for most of the season? I’m going to speculate that the professional talent evaluators in Toronto know what kind of talent they have on their hands, and that they’re allowing him to grow into the kind of player who can carry the team with his bat.

I get the weight issue. But he’s working on it, having noticeably lost weight in September, and he’s now in a conditioning program in the DR. It wouldn’t be surprising if a college-aged kid had a grow-up moment. (As a Giants fan who watched the very talented Pablo Sandoval eat away his stardom, I’m sensitive to the issue. Vlad isn’t in Panda territory.)

So, is this debate just going flare up every few weeks until the next season starts?

Vlad played 60 games as a 21-year-old. Why would anyone write him off after that? We might as well write off Tatis for his .714 OPS in September—he was a bum for half the season.

While it wasn’t smooth sailing the whole time, Vlad had some very impressive stretches—including the last couple weeks of the season. Two weeks isn’t that long, you say? Neither are the couple weeks when he struggled. All numbers, slumps, hot streaks, etc., are magnified by the season’s truncation. Had it been a 162-game season, Christian Yelich could’ve ended up an MVP candidate. We’ll never know, because the normal course wasn’t allowed to play out.

We all know that players have slow or fast starts, and slow or fast finishes; that they have slumps and one or two standout months over the course of a six-month, 162-game season. And we all should know that, just because Juan Soto is showing otherwise, that most 21-year-olds aren’t anywhere near their peak capabilities. (Yelich, for example.)

And did you know that Vlad is younger than his legendary dad was before he had his first major league plate appearance?

And have you thought about why the Blue Jays kept Vlad in the middle of the lineup for most of the season? I’m going to speculate that the professional talent evaluators in Toronto know what kind of talent they have on their hands, and that they’re allowing him to grow into the kind of player who can carry the team with his bat.

I get the weight issue. But he’s working on it, having noticeably lost weight in September, and he’s now in a conditioning program in the DR. It wouldn’t be surprising if a college-aged kid had a grow-up moment. (As a Giants fan who watched the very talented Pablo Sandoval eat away his stardom, I’m sensitive to the issue. Vlad isn’t in Panda territory.)

It’s not as much of a steal as the Update black that went for $80 last winter. But it’s still a heckuva pickup.

Recent submission results seem much more stringent. Some pops got shot up pretty good though. I wouldn't be too concerned, its a really nice card. If they stay consistently tough(and pricey)for modern gems it should not only raise the selling price for them but maybe even 9's too- getting a clear premium over raw?
Rainbow foils are just so much more attractive than golds IMO.

That also requires a bit of clairvoyance though. Many assume NNO could go full bat-Down, but no one really knows. Did you predict Tatis RD's going completely bonkers and smashing the RC/RD dynamic? I surely didn't. Vlad becoming a superstar is only one of the future possibilities, and the least likely regardless of how much any of us believe in his abilities. If he doesn't become a hobby darling, and if I can't predict the specific card that will become THE card, I want to still have cards that I personally like. Guess it depends on each individual's collecting/investing goals balance.

Yeah, that Sapphire is a great pickup. As is the Gold Label auto. Gold Label doesn’t get much love on the speculation/investment front, but they’re great-looking cards.

I think $60 is pretty likely, $50 definitely in the range of possibilities. It's only October, they've already dropped down to $90 and no one wants to buy Guerrero. Acuna PSA 10s are already finishing in the mid $120s.

It’s a Fansided blog/column, so there really isn’t any value to it. As a career journalist who dabbled in writing for Fansided as a side-gig, I found myself looking around the rest of the Fansided writers and not seeing much quality.

I’m not a gun guy, either, and I don’t love seeing this. But yeah, it could be an attempt to look cool. Or it could have to do with being a celebrity in the DR. I’m sure incidents like the attempt on David Ortiz have a lot of players on edge.

I hope so too. In the interview, he references Tatis’ success and if Instagram is any indication, Vlad and Tatis spend a lot of time together in the off season, so hopefully Tatis’ work ethic rubs off on Vlad. He needs 2021 to be his break out year.

I love the exasperation by the interviewer when he heard 32 pounds. In fact, the interviewer was great overall, asking tough questions and pressing Vlad on his weight and performance. He also asked about something I’ve been wondering about: What does Vlad Sr. have to say?

Vlad’s matter-of-fact candor was also impressive. There was no dodging questions or defensiveness. He knows what he’s done wrong and what needs to be done, and so far he’s apparently doing it. It’s also noteworthy that he’s viewing himself relative to Soto, Tatis and Acuna. Hopefully that’s a sign of his drive to reach that level.

Considering I’m buying NNO’s for $80 each right now I was shocked. Bought a Topps Soto PSA 10 for $160 off him and asked if he had any Vlad or Tatis...he said take them all for $240. I was in shock to be honest with you. He’s got a big batch coming back from PSA next week too so I may be a buyer again. 😉

I hope so too. In the interview, he references Tatis’ success and if Instagram is any indication, Vlad and Tatis spend a lot of time together in the off season, so hopefully Tatis’ work ethic rubs off on Vlad. He needs 2021 to be his break out year.

Superman II was way better than Superman I. Granted, both were better than Superman Returns. Either way, we get to see Superman. I’m excited to see if Vlad takes this sh*t seriously and comes in with improved bat speed because of the weight loss.

I agree. I’m all in on this kid and if he can’t bring it in his third year, I may tap out. The covid stoppage and restart derailed him. Him hanging with Tatis Jr all off season will help. It’s all about maturity and HOPEFULLY he’s found it.

Correct ! It may be the most surprising part of all that is Vlads “underperforming” tiny sample size so far. He’s just a baby in the sports world. Most 20 yr old kids unless their military or into fitness aren’t in the best of shape yet. He looks much better now when I looked at the link someone posted. He’s obviously serious about playing third base and it shows right now. His career’s gonna take off one of these days.

Yeah those are Real deals there & that blue could HUGE by summertime & is one of the better looking Vlads. Absolute steals w/the other two as well. Cant go back but wish I hadn’t bought so much before I would’ve scooped up 50 of these at those bargain prices. Condition be damned their practically giveaways!

Spot on that’s a great sale. Can’t believe a BGS 9 did that much ?? PSA 10 would be off the charts if he catches fire. I think there’s a couple of em if not mistaken. Back when I was looking for one they all had steak knife top edges.

Chances are that any 10’s or 9.5’s have razor-bladed edges...

Bought NNO PSA 10’s at $80 a month ago. Now they are creeping up to $140+ I wonder just how much higher they can go before stagnating.

They certainly never dropped into the $60-$70 range that some predicted/feared/hoped for.

I would have to imagine we’ve seen most of the bounce-back at this point, and then we’ll see another surge whenever people start ramping up for the season—in Feb or March.

Then again, the landscape seems to be changing with all the attention on card investment this past year. So maybe offseason trends aren’t what they used to be—and the NNO will gradually continue creeping toward $200 before spring training begins.

I sure was hoping they would. Thought that $80 was low so I bought quite a few. I wasn't expected it to hit $150 until January at the earliest, but here we are.

I think $60 is pretty likely, $50 definitely in the range of possibilities. It's only October, they've already dropped down to $90 and no one wants to buy Guerrero. Acuna PSA 10s are already finishing in the mid $120s.

Where you at BBases? Dude is looking fit and they never sniffed $60. Hope you loaded up.

I wish they would have dropped to $50. I would have made $1000’s with how heavily I was buying them for $80-$85. I would have bought 50 of them.
