If we’re talking strictly aesthetics I prefer a foilboard over any chrome except a blue or red refractor. But agree 100% in this chrome crazy environment that they will continue to lag behind.

First and foremost, because most people don’t have as good of taste as we do.

But also because Sapphire is known as the fancy base set, while the foilboard is a parallel and an anomaly that people maybe can’t quite figure out.

Sapphire has the NNO pic and is the Vlad version of the Acuna bat down Sapphire (but not exactly). Foilboard is a complete-set parallel of a complete-set-only card.

This doesn’t mean the foilboard will always lag behind, of course. The more Vlad’s market unfolds, the more people there will be searching for undervalued cards.

Not true. They won't get the love the others do because they are a true White Whale. There are 162 of these cards but only a handful in circulation as no one wants to bust their sets.

The ones that are left on eBay right now are priced astronomically, especially for a BGS 9 and a PSA 9. If a PSA 10 were offered at auction right now, I think it would finish pretty strong.

I've spent most of the afternoon digging, and I have to agree with the consensus - the high end cards are accelerating faster than a lot of the mid tier staples. There are a few premium color 2016 Bowman chrome autos on sale right now that are going to set some startling new highs, I think.

I’m just about done buying unless a great auto pops up for a deal, but here’s what I’m seeing...

TC201 refractors are still one of the best buys out there, but it’s getting steeper very quickly. TCU refractors and xfractors are also fantastic with the serial numbered scarcity. These to me are a great example of expanding beyond the obvious choices. Still an RC, not an RD. Regardless of the superior TC201 photo, I don’t think they will be this cheap for very long.

I think the days of getting TC201 PSA 10 refractors for less than $500 are over. Sepias feel underpriced versus refractors in terms of long term, but the whole market is continuing to creep up.

Yea, as I’m reviewing completed sales, I didn’t realize they were getting that high. I have one stashed away, but wish I could have afforded to buy more.

Some of the TCU refractors are tempting me, but I kinda want to put money towards another decent auto if possible. I have one xfractor, but wouldn’t mind grabbing the regular or some color before it all gets out of range.

Even, the lower end Vlads are selling very well too, the $3 to $5 to $10 etc (even the 2017 and 2018 stuff.)

What is nice about his stuff though, it is a very organic, steady rise. Not this crazy shooting up super fast thing, and in the long run that should really be good for his market as a whole.

There's def not another 10k of NNO PSA 10. The 10/9 ratio of that card is about 1:1 whereas for Tatis its 1.75 to 1. I would probably still go with NNO as you have to expect there will be many more 201 PSA 10s down the road.

Here's my amateur take on why.

I'd like to compare Acuna as he too had the SP in series 2 and another true rc in Update.

Purely from what I saw from breaks the Vlad no number fell at 5 per jumbo case and sometimes 4 per jumbo case. I never saw breaks of jumbo cases with less than that. The Bat down fell at 1 per jumbo case from what I saw. From that -albeit imperfect observation - the no number was printed at at least 4x the Bat Down.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the print run for 2019 Update was nearly double that of the previous year, which if right, means there are two US1 for every one US250.

Also, the image of the US1 compared to the NN SP is chalk and cheese. The NN SP is a great image, the US1 not so much. Whereas the US250 and Bat Down are both great images.

I think the Vladdy Update parallels and SP, SSP's will have great value going forward but I do not see much upside for the US1 base. I would not be rushing out to buy a ton of raw US1's but I would be buying the NN SP in quantity if you're keen on Vlad.

That puts the Tatis premium to Vlad on BC parallels at between 3.7x and 5.1x. If we look at Topps Chrome refractors, the spread between Tatis and Vlad has shrunk to between 1.5x and 2x.

Is it as simple as Vladdy’s BC stuff is just “cheap”? Or is there some variable I’m missing here that explains the disparity?

Something to look for in future games.....

A point that hasn't been touched on much is on Saturday he actually stole 2nd AND was also caught stealing 2nd later in the game. Although....I'm certain he was safe, but video wasn't enough to overturn the call on the field.

If he keeps on hitting HR's and doubles or when you hit a single, either Bichette or Semien are also on 2nd base, it gets very hard to attempt SB's.

But...with his increase in speed, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him steal 20ish bases in future years.

THIS has been on my mind. He’s been hitting better than anyone WITH sticky stuff on the ball to increase spin rate. Now that MLB has cracked down on it, will Vlads number actually get even BETTER? This Boston series started right as the crackdown started and Boston’s pitching seems to have gone from day to night because of it.

Personally, I certainly wouldn’t bank on a proliferation of stolen bags. I think that’s more Tatis and Acuna territory. I’m not concerned at all about whether he swipes bags or not though.

I just want him to stay locked in and keep his same approach at the plate. He has power to spare so he doesn’t have to sell out for the big fly, hits for power to all fields, insane exit velo, hits for power AND average. He’s simply dangerous at the plate.

Most importantly, he doesn’t have glaring holes in his approach that pitchers can exploit. He doesn’t have to get lucky and hope pitchers make mistakes. I would definitely bank on a proliferation of walks if he keeps destroying the ball like this however.

I wouldn't say speed has nothing to do with stolen bases -- you certainly need t ohave speed greater than X, whatever X is -- but the vast majority of stolen bases are stolen off the pitcher and not the catcher so it's really about putting in the work to becoming a better base runner and knowing the opposing pitcher's moves and tells.

Someone with slightly above average speed can be a great base stealer if they're smart, can get large leads, and are able to go the moment the pitcher raises their foot.

That being said, not a lot of people steal 20 bases in a season these days. It's not due to any inability as much as strategy (modern wisdom tells us you need to be successful at about an 80+% clip in order to even make it worth it) and reallocation of time (like why they don't have their guys out there practicing bunting for an hour). I don't see Vladdy stealing 20 bags in a season. Ten? Okay, maybe.

But something tells me it won't take him long to realize this "sliding head first into 2B" bulls**t and banging up his hands just isn't worth being young and having SB on your stat sheet.

Not sure how big of a bump that will translate into, if any, but his good stuff will hold some value. I’ve contemplated a 1995 Bowman’s Best Refractor for the heck of it, and they certainly ain’t cheap.

I love that the athleticism debate has morphed from “Vlad’s fat…losing weight won’t help…he’s the next Prince Fielder” to “Can he steal 20 bases? Maybe, but don’t risk it!”

For what it’s worth, I say he should steal some bags. Pujols twice swiped 16 bases. Soto stole 12 in ‘19. Paul Goldschmidt stole 71 bags in a 3-year span. Sure, risk exists, but anything serious is pretty unlikely. Not to mention, Vlad wears a bulletproof oven mitt on his lead slide hand—those fingers aren’t getting jammed.

I sucked it up and bought a Sapphire PSA 10. The card has really only run up about 30-50% this season and I think it's about to break through a price tier. At a minimum, I doubt I'll get killed on the card, and the 2019 Sapphires are just super gorgeous. Normally I wouldn't go for PSA 10s, but it's an expensive enough card I can't imagine there are that many of them sitting at PSA at this point, and they've gotten stingier on 10s so I don't really want to buy raw and risk it at what's likely to be $150/pop.

I think that’s a great buy. It’s been hovering at the 1400 to 1800 range for a while now as you’ve had a decent amount listed from those who bought in the 600 to 800 range and are cashing out . But we should be getting to the point really soon where most people’s basis in this card is now reset at this new higher range and then I think we’ll see this jump to the $2500 range.

He seems to like Fenway. As a Red Sox fan I could go for Big Papi the 2nd as a late career DH. I am torn on the sapphire. I had 4 PSA 10’s with back to back serial numbers. Bought 5 raw at about 250-280 a piece and sent 4 in. What I have noticed is there are always plenty available driving down price. Maybe eventually the will make the big jump, but I decided it best to get in on better low numbered graded as a long term card.

What's everyones thoughts on the 2019 Topps Clearly Autos? Is it a very condition-sensitive card with surface issues?

My mistake, he's played most of the year at 1B it seems. I don't follow the Blue Jays at all, but saw recently that he's been DHing and assumed that was the case fof moat of the season.

The same Taiwanese seller has a bunch of sick auctions ending tonight. On top of the Vlad red shimmer, there's a Bregman red shimmer, a Lux red wave, a Kiriloff red wave, a Lux gold, a Judge TC X-fractor auto, an Ohtani Heritage RC auto - fun stuff.

Someone did a best offer on a BGS 9.5 gold for 25K tonight. Two BGS 9.5 purples sold in the high 4Ks on Saturday. The red shimmer is a PSA 10, too; there are only about a total of 160 PSA 10s in the entire pop of 2016 Vladito BC autos, because that was a year everyone was on BGS and no one is going to try to cross a BGS 9.5 these days. I honestly expect the card to wind up between 45-50K. The orange will end up around 40K. I considered getting in on the blue, but honestly, I don't like 2016 BC nearly as much as other years (I have several Bregman autos) - they just aren't as shiny as the later sets.

I have some 2017 Bergmans that I am just in love with because of how good the refractor components look. Too bad they couldn’t cross that with the 2016 design, it would have been legendary.

It’s a solid payday for the seller, for sure, but I would’ve expected a little higher. Then again, shimmers aren’t quite as beloved.

I could see that. I had an Acuna ‘17 blue refractor that was pretty outstanding. Even his regular refractors can hold your gaze for an extra second.

Yeah, the BGS 9.5 orange is already north of where the PSA 10 red shimmer closed. Yeah, shimmers aren't nearly as popular as the standard colors, but it's still a red /10 and a PSA 10. I wonder if part of it is because it was a Taiwan based seller and just some people staying away because of that.

It adds up to 20 points of OBP and 60 points of slugging north of where Ozuna finished in 2020, in what's been a much rougher environment for offense up until a week ago. Also one is 22 and was the consensus #1 prospect, versus one having a Brady Anderson year at 29. Repeatability and projection matter.

I have no issue with BBases, other than the fact that anytime someone asks "How come this is different from this previous iteration?" the entire basis of his argument is "those dum-dum basketball/football collectors don't know how baseball cards work!"

I can't imagine an argument more devoid of reason or logic, especially when flying in the face of numerous rationally based reasons.

But I certainly hold no ill will toward Mr. Bases. I'm certainly not trying to run him off or attempt to minimize his posting. I just can't get behind an entire examination of the baseball card market founded on "those dum-dums don't know what they're doing!"

Dude turn your heritage red into a mystery auto. I told you that over a year ago. Heritage is like a 4th, 5th etc preference for most now. Sell that thing and move on to a Mystery auto or something shiny 😉

I just bought a 2016 Bowman paper in a PSA9. One of the more satisfying purchases of late (bottom feeders gotta bottom feed.). Absolutely love this image.

Hopefully raw 2016 prospect chromes stay under $150 for a few more weeks.

Probably around $400. Maybe $450 right after Vlad hits a homer.

The red doesn’t sell for a whole lot more than black, green and base, and those have mostly been selling in the $300’s.

There was a green PSA 9 that went for $456 the other day. It’s possible that a condition-sensitive acetate card sells for a premium in a PSA 9 case. Or maybe that gives some hope that your red could sell for something closer to $500.
