I don’t think this necessarily has to do with Vlad, although the mini slump doesn’t help. I think we’re starting to see the market begin to cave a bit here. It may sound crazy to some but we’re probably in a super bubble here. Stocks, housing market, collectibles, whatever. With the cost of living really accelerating I think cards are going to be less and less a priority for a lot of people. The result will probably be a large retraction in the card market overall.

Heck if I know! Literally both auto’s. Both /25. Both Diamond Icons. One DIA-VGJ and the other AC-VGJ! It’s (the DIA) already at PSA in assembly and I just now realized the difference.

PSA accepts one but not the other for the registry.

His swing is fine, pitchers aren't throwing to his spots. He's starting to chase (he IS chasing) and he's trying to get to the ball. They talked to him about letting pitchers come to him, but he seems to be forcing it.

Not sure but he is getting hits, I think I was more talking out loud about really driving the ball. A lot of his current metrics are the worse of his career, by a good number, that would tie into the power spike he saw last year, that he hadn’t seen the prior year.

Obviously still super early, hence why I said I can’t wait to see him go a tear at the plate.

I hear ya.

Players aren’t consistently at the top of their game from day to day, week to week, or even month to month. They go through funks, then they make adjustments and get back on track. And if this is a slump, then Vlad has a really high floor.

And I agree that those cards should be slabbed. But $100 a pop is rough. I guess I can join the PSA club and get 90-day service for $50 a card…which would be worth it if there’s potential for some 10’s.

He doesn’t. This ties into him chasing a lot more than he has in the past. The Jays as a whole aren’t hitting at all, so it’s not just him, but you’d expect him to start coming out of it soon.

Has he gained weight?Not that I can see. I feel like he looks great. The big difference in the profile this year was mentioned earlier and it's launch angle. He has reverted to 2020. The stadium claims are kind of dumb if you understand launch angle. His exit velocities are still out of this world. Just needs to add some launch angle (easier said than done of course).

Also, his fly ball rate is down 6% yoy, which is material when you consider that basically one out of every 4 fly balls he hits is a dinger.

He actually had a semi-deep flyout today. That wouldn’t usually be notable, but that might’ve been the first ball in a week he’s hit with any lift.

I think you're are exactly right.

Some stats to support that.

Avg Exit Velo - 2022 = 93.2, 2021 = 95.1
Max Exit Velo - 2022 = 117.9, 2021 = 117.4
Hard Hit % - 2022 = 54.5, 2021 = 55.2

All those are very close to one another. When he's hitting the ball he's hitting it pretty much with the same "force" as last year.

Two BIG differences.

FB% - 2022 = 11.9%, 2021 = 25.2%, his career avg = 22.8%
LA - 2022 = 4.7, 2021 = 9.4, current MLB average = 12

If he can bump up his LA that will increase his fly ball rate and he'll start putting the ball out of the park. Some of his numbers are frustrating for sure, but are very correctable.

He was lifting the ball more in the early part of last season. All of those lifted balls at 100+ exit velo would go out in any ballpark. Is he hitting the ball less hard in Rogers? Do we have that data? He just needs to hit more fly balls and the above will look silly.


Coincidentally, when Vlad did most of his damage in those minor league parks, Ohtani was having the finest two or three months of his career at the plate. Then his numbers took a bit of a dive in the second half. And he’s still not back to that crazy level of last year’s first half—even though he’s played all of his home games in the Big A.

If he played thr first half in Roger's and second half in the AAA ballpark, you'd be saying wow, he loves playing in Roger's. There is more to this than what you are saying. There is so much data to sort through and you refuse to look at it.

I just read a Vlad quote in which he said he’s not 100% (he didn’t elaborate, but presumably physically?), which would also be similar to how Soto’s shoulder may have been bugging him last year.

He just doesn’t have a plan at the plate from what it seems. He swung at a 1-0 change up. Probably not the pitch you want to be swinging at, at that time, unless you’re looking for it, which based on the outcome he couldn’t have been.

I don’t know if those are approaching records, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were. I also wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the first time it’s been done by a defending home run champion.

Just a quick heads up on this card, not a huge card but someone will be paying $$$ I am sure.

The reason it didn't sit well with me is because I own this card 5/5 and noticed this card in the ebay listing (2/5) is NOT a true gold which is /5 yet is marked /5 on the back. So I looked harder and it looks to be more like the base version of the card which made me wonder if base autos existed at all and if so was the /5 added on the back to try and increase value?

Look at that card base and you'll notice the red in the top logos etc indicate base card, not the GOLD stamping throughout that a /5 has, like the one I have all over the front (see photo below).

Also the card # is different too! Mine is VG-PEA16 where as this card on ebay claiming to be a /5 auto has a base card number VG-PE16, no A because no authentication needed because not signed is my guess.

Maybe I am wrong but gut is meh on this one guys, what do you think, the seller feedback of (1) isn't a good sign either lol

UPDATE: I sent a message to the seller pointing out the issues with the card and said maybe he was unaware etc (benefit of the doubt). His response was "yes i know, its an error card that he was present to sign.". I replied how do you know its an error and what do you mean he was present to sign, was it a paid signing or? What bothers me is he makes no mention of an ERROR or otherwise in the listing calling it a 2/5 and authenticated.

TORONTO – The least exciting way to bring home a run may very well be the bases-loaded walk, especially one in which the batter isn’t even tempted to swing at anything the pitcher offers up.

That’s how the Toronto Blue Jays scored their only run in Wednesday’s 5-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners, when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. kept the bat on his shoulder for five straight pitches from Marco Gonzales before trotting over to first base.



For a team that’s struggled to deliver big blows, it wasn’t exactly a riveting moment.


Beneath the surface, though, it was a plate appearance of wider significance for both Guerrero, who matched George Springer for team lead in RBIs at 21, and the Blue Jays. Gonzales nibbled around the zone, not only out of wise caution with last year’s AL MVP runner-up, but likely also because the 23-year-old is swinging at balls 10 per cent more often this year than last.

Consider this pitch chart from Guerrero’s 16th walk of the season.


Gonzales is clearly trying to exploit Guerrero’s eagerness to do damage. The Blue Jays, down 1-0 and trying take the lead, were desperate to put a crooked number up on the board. Guerrero stayed disciplined enough to not give in.

“Sometimes at the beginning of the season, I didn't have maybe the exact same plan that I had last year. Sometimes I tried to do too much myself, regardless of if we are doing well or poorly. I just took it on myself,” Guerrero said in an interview interpreted by Hector Lebron.

“Maybe I'm putting a little bit more pressure on myself, I guess, especially with runners in scoring position. But I'm seeing that already, so I'm trying to work on that and now I'm starting to take whatever they give me. I trust my teammates, whoever is hitting behind me, and if they give me the walk, I take my walk.”

Amid ongoing pressure to deliver at the plate and pile up all the runs this offence was expected to produce, what the Blue Jays collectively need more of is the type of sound approach Guerrero showed in that third inning.

More than most, Guerrero has been feeling the weight of the team’s troubles scoring, regularly straying from his zone in pursuit of extra bases.

This season, his chase percentage is sitting at 34 per cent, compared to 24.5 per cent a year ago. He’s also making contact with those pitches more often, at a 60 per cent clip versus 47.3 per cent in 2021, so he’s swinging at worse pitches and hitting them more often, which isn’t what you want.

In spite of that, Guerrero is still making some of the best contact in baseball, his average exit velocity of 93.5 mph in the top three per cent of the majors, his hard-hit percentage of 54.6 in the top two per cent and his maximum exit velo of 117.9 in the top one per cent.

The pitcher’s mound and infield positions remain incredibly scary places when he’s at the plate.

But because he’s expanded his zone – and is so talented that he can still hit bad pitches ridiculously hard – his average launch angle has dropped dramatically, from 9.6 degrees a year ago to 4.1 now. That in part helps explain why in the 11 games since hitting his seventh homer May 5 at Cleveland, he’s gone 48 plate appearances without an extra-base hit amid a 15-game hitting streak.

“It’s more about the pitches I’m swinging at,” said Guerrero. “Like instead of me seeing a good pitch and hitting it back up the middle, I'm just trying to yank it, trying to pull it. That's basically what it is. I've just got stay in the strike zone and through the middle.”

An example of that came in the eighth inning Wednesday against Paul Sewald. Down 0-2 in the count, Guerrero shot a 93.2 mph fastball away to right field for a base hit.


He employed a similar approach Monday night on a third inning single to the right side on a Chris Flexen cutter. Given that Guerrero often points to being at his best when he’s staying up the middle, the base hits could perhaps be taken as leading indicators that he’s getting right.

“Kind of,” he said, grinning at the suggestion. “The sign is when I hit it out to right field. That's when you are going to see that I’m right.”

The challenge, of course, is maintaining the necessary discipline at the plate to force pitchers into his happy zones.

TORONTO – The least exciting way to bring home a run may very well be the bases-loaded walk, especially one in which the batter isn’t even tempted to swing at anything the pitcher offers up.

That’s how the Toronto Blue Jays scored their only run in Wednesday’s 5-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners, when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. kept the bat on his shoulder for five straight pitches from Marco Gonzales before trotting over to first base.



For a team that’s struggled to deliver big blows, it wasn’t exactly a riveting moment.


Beneath the surface, though, it was a plate appearance of wider significance for both Guerrero, who matched George Springer for team lead in RBIs at 21, and the Blue Jays. Gonzales nibbled around the zone, not only out of wise caution with last year’s AL MVP runner-up, but likely also because the 23-year-old is swinging at balls 10 per cent more often this year than last.

Consider this pitch chart from Guerrero’s 16th walk of the season.


Gonzales is clearly trying to exploit Guerrero’s eagerness to do damage. The Blue Jays, down 1-0 and trying take the lead, were desperate to put a crooked number up on the board. Guerrero stayed disciplined enough to not give in.

“Sometimes at the beginning of the season, I didn't have maybe the exact same plan that I had last year. Sometimes I tried to do too much myself, regardless of if we are doing well or poorly. I just took it on myself,” Guerrero said in an interview interpreted by Hector Lebron.

“Maybe I'm putting a little bit more pressure on myself, I guess, especially with runners in scoring position. But I'm seeing that already, so I'm trying to work on that and now I'm starting to take whatever they give me. I trust my teammates, whoever is hitting behind me, and if they give me the walk, I take my walk.”

Amid ongoing pressure to deliver at the plate and pile up all the runs this offence was expected to produce, what the Blue Jays collectively need more of is the type of sound approach Guerrero showed in that third inning.

More than most, Guerrero has been feeling the weight of the team’s troubles scoring, regularly straying from his zone in pursuit of extra bases.

This season, his chase percentage is sitting at 34 per cent, compared to 24.5 per cent a year ago. He’s also making contact with those pitches more often, at a 60 per cent clip versus 47.3 per cent in 2021, so he’s swinging at worse pitches and hitting them more often, which isn’t what you want.

In spite of that, Guerrero is still making some of the best contact in baseball, his average exit velocity of 93.5 mph in the top three per cent of the majors, his hard-hit percentage of 54.6 in the top two per cent and his maximum exit velo of 117.9 in the top one per cent.

The pitcher’s mound and infield positions remain incredibly scary places when he’s at the plate.

But because he’s expanded his zone – and is so talented that he can still hit bad pitches ridiculously hard – his average launch angle has dropped dramatically, from 9.6 degrees a year ago to 4.1 now. That in part helps explain why in the 11 games since hitting his seventh homer May 5 at Cleveland, he’s gone 48 plate appearances without an extra-base hit amid a 15-game hitting streak.

“It’s more about the pitches I’m swinging at,” said Guerrero. “Like instead of me seeing a good pitch and hitting it back up the middle, I'm just trying to yank it, trying to pull it. That's basically what it is. I've just got stay in the strike zone and through the middle.”

An example of that came in the eighth inning Wednesday against Paul Sewald. Down 0-2 in the count, Guerrero shot a 93.2 mph fastball away to right field for a base hit.


He employed a similar approach Monday night on a third inning single to the right side on a Chris Flexen cutter. Given that Guerrero often points to being at his best when he’s staying up the middle, the base hits could perhaps be taken as leading indicators that he’s getting right.

“Kind of,” he said, grinning at the suggestion. “The sign is when I hit it out to right field. That's when you are going to see that I’m right.”

The challenge, of course, is maintaining the necessary discipline at the plate to force pitchers into his happy zones.

He isn't swinging at Javy Baez pitches. He should have better results and hasn't. That's what it means to have an xslug 80 points higher than his actual slug or an avg that's 27 points off of xba.

Coulda/shoulda made a stronger bid, but the Toronto Expo is on the horizon and hope to swing some deals buying or trading there.

Great articles, especially when read one after the other. Many times slumps are due to be slightly impatient. Nothing in either article speaks to a mechanical flaw or technical issue, it's really about making better choices.

I forget the game, but it was one of that 4 or 5 he's played and he was up 2-0 in the count. At that point he should really be looking for his favorite pitch and certainly something he can drive, and instead I think he swung at a changeup and grounded out. To me that's a good example of him being off with his approach and how he "feels" up there.

His RISP stats are not that bad imo, 16 rib's batting .26? and 2 HR, not great but bad enough to move down? I mean the other guys are certainly picking up the slack would they want to play with that.

His prices are already coming down.

The thing is no one knows what he can be. Is he a one year wonder, or is he the next superstar. Every hitter goes through rough patches. Every single one. Right now he is just swinging at too many bad pitches and/or not doing anything consistently with the better pitches he’s getting.

While he has some stats that point to better days ahead, he also has metrics that point to some big problems.
