PSA 9s do seem soft right now, to me. That might be the play.
I had the same thought, too. I picked up ten 9s in the past week. :)!

I bought a bunch of 10s in December, but in hindsight, should have been going the extra buck or three back then. :doh:

Condition for 2019 Update has definitely been an issue and the blacks have definitely followed suit.

A BGS 10 would probably be $200+ more at this moment than a PSA 10. Look at the Acuna US250 BGS 10 vs PSA 10. BGS 10's got up to around $800 last year while PSA 10 was at $125. BGS 10's are creeping back up in the $5-600 range at the moment.

Personally though, I would keep it as a PSA 10. While I have a couple of BGS 10's, I much prefer the look of the PSA, plus it's going to be a very hard crossover to BGS 10. One that 90% of PSA 10's don't make.

Thanks for the advice. The centering is what I would hope to be the 9.5, if it got a BGS. Knowing my luck and the fact I don’t spend an obscene amount at BGS makes this an easy decision. As others do, I think the card has a lot of potential.

This. Any Topps black card that's been graded a 9 I generally will value about 30-60% over a raw copy as opposed to the kinda standard 1x-1.25x I put on most other non sensitive modern 9s.

I subbed 15 and got 8 10’s, 7 9’s. Top right corner is the consistent issue and most of the 9’s are what I expected. They will also rise in price over time so it didn’t bother me too much.

None should get rejected now. When the set first came out they all got rejected for being too short. But after Topps informed PSA they were cut short at the factory, PSA started grading them.

Raw copies seem to be in the mid-high $20s now too, which to me indicates the 9s are still cheap because most of those raw copies are going to grade 8 or 9 at best. On some I looked at, you can see the white on the upper corner(s).

Someone hit BIN on a PSA-8 a couple days ago for $17.99 and a day later one went for $14.99.

Quick little story... Back in November, Probstein had a bunch NNO PSA 10's up for auction. I wanted go nab a few, but the auctions were all ending in the middle of my children's bath time. (I couldn't really justify to my wife skipping that to watch some ebay auctions.)

So I put in early bids of $65 on about 15 of them, and then hoped for some wins. Well, I ended up with 13 (!!!), all ending in the $57-$59 range. It was a surprise, to say the least. Sort of like an unplanned pregnancy. But now that they're mine, I wouldn't change a thing.

I've discussed this with a few other sellers because it has happened a lot the past couple of years.

Our theory is that when eBay started implementing changes to their fee structures, sellers started moving more to Fixed Price listings, but many buyers did not make the transition. In other words, some buyers are still treating eBay as an auction site. They only view auctions and only bid on auctions. The challenge is determining which cards are better for auction and which are better for fixed price. Depending on the card, what is available, which formats, etc one listing method could outperform the other.

It’s a toss-up. It pretty much comes down to whether you prefer paper or Chrome refractor. For me, it depends a lot on the image. The 2018 Heritage base photos of Acuna and Gleyber are really dull, which makes the actions a clear winner in those cases. In 2019, I personally would prefer the Vlad Chrome refractor, but for Tatis I prefer the action.

From what I have seen....if the topps chrome and topps flagship have the same image, the chrome goes for more. All I'm saying is that the chrome should sell for quite a bit more.

Right now the NNO sells for 6x the chrome. Which is CRAZY. NNO is a "short print" but the chrome will close the gap a bit at some point. It has to!

Time will tell and of course I could be wrong.

Take a look at pre-2018 sapphire rookie sales, specifically the multiples they sell for in comparison to numbered topps chrome color refractors.

There were less sapphire cards produced in those years.

Now we have more copies of the sapphire per player and the multiples they are selling for over topps chrome color has increased astronomically.

Outside of the big 4 rookies we're already seeing a tighter sales spread for sapphire vs. numbered color refractors in 2019.

I agree with almost everything you say here. And no question that the base pricing is really top heavy, once you get past Eloy the drop-off is pretty huge I’d imagine. The problem is that it is the “it” brand going right now. They’ve come down a tad on most guys but nowhere near where I’d consider them a buy. I like to go comc or eBay store hunting for the lesser names.

As others have pointed out, Vladdy would be the first player who's Flagship Base is more than his Chrome Base. I think the NNO factor helps it get there. However there's an estimated 100,000 made of one card. There's an estimated 6,000-7,000 made of the Chrome Refractor of that same card. The NNO is currently outpacing the Refractor in price but odds are this may not be the case in the future. We saw the Update Acuna slingshot ahead early in the year only to see a huge pullback when supply started increasing. Best to hedge and get some Refractors if you are loading up on the NNO anyway.

I don’t know how many there. I discussed the matter a couple weeks ago, and shared my speculation that maybe there are 100. But that’s pure speculation, based on a baseless hunch that Topps could be following the Bowman Lucky model.

It’s been my impression that there are usually about 250 Heritage autos, so I imagine Lucky and Heritage could reasonably serve end the two end-points for the potential range of the Mystery print run. So, at least 100 and certainly no more than 250, with a lean toward 100.

If 65 have been graded by PSA, and like more by BGS, it's way over 100. These fell in Series 1 which is barely being broken. I'd wager between 250-500.

I don’t think there are any odds for the mystery redemptions. The Beckett.com price guide just says they’re random inserts, and this pack I found online doesn’t seem to show any odds. Of course, Topps Series 1 has about 800 inserts, so it could easily be lost in the 0.01 font size...

I think there is little risk in riding it out. If he starts hot in April, watch that May skyrocket. Also, if he doesn't start hot just ok I think prices stay stable, if he does terrible they will drop 30%ish. Just IMO.

Eventually his stuff has to go down from these prices if his defense and baserunning doesn't improve significantly no matter how good he winds up at the plate right? The baserunning should improve with the weight reduction but I don't know what precedent there is from going from just about the worst infield defender in baseball to just, say, below average. I do have a few good cards of his that I'm holding but what's preventing me dumping in more is that defense capping his WAR ceiling at well below MVP levels

Got the red in a while ago. Don’t like that the Orange is short in the case, but I read in this thread that this is how his chrome parallels are. Also seller said it had a print line down the right side and did a close up of the etching. Turns out it was just the etching. Red does have 2 small scuffs though.
