If Seattle can find a way to go 10-6 down the stretch, it's a guaranteed WC birth.
The very good news for Seattle is that 7 of those 16 come against the best team in baseball. You might think that's not so great, but because the Angels have the division 100% wrapped up; they won't be playing hard at all, especially that last three game set in Seattle to close the season.
Wouldn't surprise me to see guys like Pujols, Trout and the rest to get a few deserved off-days against Seattle.

I'm not sure I am 100% on board with you here. I think if it's that close, The Angels are not gonna roll over and rest their guys, and let us get into the playoffs. No one wants to face Felix and Kuma

I can't think of any team that doesn't play the bench on the final weekend with everything locked up. Especially considering what happened this weekend with all the hits being taken to the head on pitches ...
Can you imagine if Trout is playing on Sunday in Seattle and takes one to the wrist? Pretty sure Scioscia would be fired on the spot.

I'm going to the game next Wed in Anaheim. Hope Paxton finds the strike zone better next week!
fritzfreddie
09-13-2014, 12:12 AM
Also might depend on whether they care about having the best record or not. Orioles aren't that far back.
In the end I could see them resting some guys if comfortable with their position in the AL. I think they would worry more about how to handle their guys over who their opponent might be.
A's, Detroit, KC, and Mariners all have pretty decent staffs so not sure they care what 2 end up in the WC game. At this rate the WC winner may even have to win a Get into the WC game and the WC game to make a 5 game series really putting their pitching in a hole.

Every team in baseball pitches their closer at home in the 9th or 10th in a tie game. Every single one ...
So to fault Lloyd for pitching Rodney there is impossible. However, faulting Lloyd for sticking with Rodney after X number of walks / that's doable.
Mariners need walk-off win #2; which would still be last in baseball by a longshot.

No. You CAN fault Lloyd there. We have the best bullpen in Baseball. Rodney has shown all year, he blows in non save situations. We are playing for something. I don't care what every other manager in baseball does.

Well, there's no save opportunity when you're at home after the 8th inning if you're not in the lead.
So you throw your closer because he is supposed to be your best pressure pitcher. No sense in saving him for another inning; because you just don't know how many you may or may not play.

It's not impossible at all, we've seen this chapter enough times this year to know how it ends. Just because everyone else does something doesn't mean you do it yourself.

Lloyd had four regular bull-pen pitchers left. Maurer / Medina / Leone / Rodney.
So Rodney doesn't pitch the 10th. He'd probably pitch the 11th, and if he didn't pitch the 11th, he throw him in the 12th.
Maurer and Medina have been shaky lately and Leone is the young kid. Again, every manager knows you pitch your bullpen backwards at home in extra innings; the fault is not on Lloyd for throwing Rodney; it's on Rodney for not throwing strikes, and then on Lloyd for leaving him in against both Moss (which worked) and Lowrie (which did not).

Everyone does it because it's a high pressure situation and you go with your best. Closer, then set up man, then the rest of your pen.

There are generally accepted practices held by every manager in baseball; one of which is to pitch your bullpen backwards in extra innings when at home. The philosophy is sound, and there's absolutely no reason not to ...
Simply because Lloyd follows this philosophy doesn't make him any less a manager. Perhaps he should start Taijuan Walker in the play-in game because no manager would think to do that either.

That GM has at least been to the playoffs what 5 or 6 times since the last time Seattle made it? He may have made a bad move this year but over his tenure he's done a fantastic job and it's because he thought for himself. He may not have won the WS but teams like the Red Sox have and because they also changed their thinking following his lead.
I know why managers would throw a closer out there but I've seen multiple reasons this year why we shouldn't be one of them. That's the reason not to.

Everyone had reasons not to be out there. Medina blew it against Houston w/ 2 outs earlier this week and against Baltimore in the 10th six weeks ago; Maurer's ERA is over 7 in his last 10 appearances, and Leone is the young rookie that few managers would trust in such a large game.
Again though, the Mariners didn't score in the 10th, so you'd have to pick another pitcher to trot back out there for the 11th.
You go with Rodney. Any other choice that doesn't work out; you get second guessed to death because you left your pressure pitcher in the pen.

Sound philosophy if using random data sure but we know how Rodney looks in that role. It was also sound philosophy for many years to bunt a guy into scoring position but many people have abandoned that early in games because data told them that it was less efficient many times for scoring runs. Just because people always do something doesn't mean everyone has to continue to do it.
Nothing to say about the second paragraph because that is just grasping at straws. How does that compare to seeing Rodney struggle time and again in a certain situation? Have we seen this one time and again? Nope.

You're angry because the Mariners lost, I get it. But you still haven't said who you would have had throw the 10th, and then the 11th ...
Perhaps because Rodney was the best of what was left. McClendon got an extra inning out of Danny in the 9th, and had absolutely no choice but to pitch Rodney in the 10th. If Rodney was available to pitch in the 9th with the lead, he damn well better pitch in the 10th with a tie game.

Whatever. Just the reaction for when Rodney was put into this game in this thread tells quite the story. If Medina comes in I don't think you'd see the same 'Oh crap' reaction and I don't think anyone would question why Rodney wasn't there to start it if they score on Medina. Exchange Medina for whatever name you like.
If Lloyd isn't secure enough to defend his decisions if they go against the norm then that's an issue to me. Because everyone else does it is not a good reason. Managers should be leaders and not followers.

Rodney is 44/47 in save situations this year. The reason you get the reaction when he comes in is because he doesn't make it easy; always allowing runners on base, giving up 1 run when ahead by two ... whatever the case may be.
I mean comon. Rodney has been the second best closer in all of baseball this year; and you don't want to pitch him at all in a tie game? What kind of message does that send to Rodney BTW ... "Sorry, you're no good when the game is on the line"
The man had a bad game, a very bad inning. When you are constantly in high leverage situations, the ones you pitch poorly in are magnified. I just don't understand how you blame a manager for doing exactly what he's supposed to do.
You'd benefit from rooting for a team managed by Dusty Baker. Would let you appreciate just how terrific McClendon has been this season.

I wouldn't start Rodney in a neutral position meaning tied with no one out or on base. Put someone in there like say medina and if he gets in trouble then Rodney could come in and 'save' the situation or try at least. Guys are wired weirdly. Some pitchers can't close to save their life but can pitch the 8th and be dominant. Rodney needs to save something and it seems clear that a tied game with no one on doesn't count. His juices don't flow the same way.
I'd expect a manager to notice that and manage accordingly.
And the reaction in this thread was directly tied to a non-save situation. Everyone is antsy when he comes in but 45/48 is great. He gets the job done in those spots most of the time. There is a 100% difference between, 'Oh no, get your heart medicine' that comes with a save chance with Rodney and the 'Oh crap, what is Lloyd dong' that came tonight in a non-save chance. One is a joke preparing oneself for an interesting inning that has gone our way most of the time and the other is a befuddlement of decision making.
I've cheered for teams in sports that had worse managers than Dusty Baker so please don't act like you know I have never had to deal with a bad coach and thus don't know it could be worse. I'm not saying Lloyd is terrible or anything but it's puzzling why he can't read this situation better.
I won't excuse him for a bad decision though just 'because everyone else would do it.' That's a terrible excuse. That sounds like coaching not to get fired rather than coaching to win. Is it better to lose and not deal with awkward questions why Rodney didn't pitch or (possibly) win by going unconventional.
According to the line-up card the Mariners tweeted a photo of, Mariners listed 12 pitchers available tonight and Rodney was the 5th used. Seems like he had a ton of options.

Kuma has been bad for a while now. If we somehow make the playoffs Paxton should be the #2 if we can get it that way. When i look back to what was done wrong id have to say bad managing. The constant moving guys back never did anything for us and this last time he did it every starter pitched bad. Felix had 2 bad starts, Kuma has had 4, Young had like 3, Paxton had 1, i think Elias is the only one who didnt seem to crap out on the extended rest. And that doesnt even factor in the horrible Erasmo starts and the recent letting Rodney walk 100 guys to lose the game. What you guys call good managing im seeing horrible managing in areas. Hes only been made to look good because the pitching overall has been so good.

With so little left in the season; McClendon may go with a committee for the two starts Elias was slotted in; with Walker or Wilhelmsen. The problem in giving Walker any more than a few innings is that he simply hasn't thrown more than 3 innings in a while; and the arm strength is probably not where it needs to be in order to go any deeper.

Well, no bones about it now. Mariners need to win tonight in LAA, and then take at least 2 in Houston. The good news is that both the A's and Tigers lost, so they sit 2.5 / 2 / 2 back of the three teams they're chasing. With the very high probability of a loss to KC on Monday when they resume the 4-2 Cleveland game in the 10th, that would put Seattle STILL in the drivers seat with a week left to play if they can squeeze out 3/4 now.
But even if Seattle does make it to the post-season, they sure don't look like they deserve it. Outside of a couple of innings yesterday; this offense has disappeared again. Need to find a hot streak heading into the post-season.
