Mariners notebook: Looking at Cruz and wondering what might have been
Post by Bob Dutton / The News Tribune on Oct. 10, 2014 at 8:16 am
Outfielder Nelson Cruz played a key role in helping Baltimore reach the American League Championship Series. Would he have done the same for the Mariners? (AP Photo/Paul Sancya)Outfielder Nelson Cruz played a key role in helping Baltimore reach the American League Championship Series. Would he have done the same for the Mariners?
SEATTLE — It’s hard for the Mariners to look at outfielder Nelson Cruz anchoring the middle of Baltimore’s lineup as the American League Championship Series unfolds and not wonder what might have been.
The Mariners had a deal in place last winter with Cruz, then a free agent, for roughly $7.5 million in 2014 with a club option of about $9 million for 2105…before ownership backed away.
The primary concern, which all clubs shared, was how Cruz, then 33, would respond after being caught and suspended as part of the Biogenesis drug scandal.
Still, officials with several clubs say they stopped viewing Cruz as a potential target because they expected he would bridge any differences with the Mariners.
“I still don’t know what happened there,” an official with a rival club said. “We were told it was done. And it seemed such an obvious fit for both sides. There was risk, certainly, but…”
But it didn’t happen and, finally, the Orioles offered $8 million to Cruz after spring training started even though they already had plenty of thump. Unlike the Mariners, however, they liked the risk/reward possibilities.
Cruz signed and produced the best season of his 10-year career — leading the majors with 40 homers while driving in 108 runs and batting .271.
That production helped the Orioles survive crippling injuries to Matt Wieters and Manny Machado, and a lengthy suspension to Chris Davis. And the Orioles are now one step away from their first World Series in 31 years.
The Mariners, meanwhile, missed postseason by one game in large part because they never located a run-production, right-handed bat for the middle of their lineup.
That need remains the club’s top priority as it moves through the off-season. But while Cruz will again be a free agent…well, that ship has sailed, right?
“Oh, I wouldn’t rule it out,” one Mariners official said. “We know what we need, and we’re going to go hard after one of those guys.”
Having that guy — i.e., that right-handed power bat — turn out to be Cruz seems an astoundingly long shot.
For one thing, the Orioles (no surprise) show strong interest in retaining him, and he’s a terrific fit in cozy Camden Yards.
But as the Mariners proved last winter, and can currently lament, no deal is a deal until it’s final.
SAUNDERS’ SITUATION
Fallout continues from comments by general manager Jack Zduriencik in his after-season news conference regarding outfielder Michael Saunders.
“The thing with Michael is trying to keep him on the field for the amount of time you’d like to have him,” Zduriencik said. “It’s unfortunate…Some are freak injuries. Some are things that just happen.
“But some of these things need to be handled from a maintenance standpoint to where he puts himself in a position to be able to compete over the course of the season.”
Saunders and his agent, Michael McCann, saw those comments as an unfair knock on Saunders’ work habits in a public forum. Fact is, Zduriencik would likely choose different words if given another chance.
But…the Mariners, right or wrong, do see Saunders, 27, as injury-prone (although he had had more than 900 at-bats in 2012-13). That view makes it hard for them to see him a reliable piece in putting together their 2015 roster.
The Mariners also see a left-handed hitter in a lefty-heavy lineup whose career slash is .231/.301/.685. Further, they see a player who is eligible for arbitration again after making $2.3 million in 2014.
That price figures to go north of $3 million in 2015 because Saunders, while he played just 78 games, set career highs in all three slash categories: .273 average, .341 on-base percentage and .450 slugging percentage.
The Mariners appear committed to Dustin Ackley and Austin Jackson in left and center field. They believe their primary off-season target of a right-handed power bat fits best in right field.
If so, that turns Saunders into a fourth outfielder at $3 million or more, which doesn’t seem a good fit for anybody.
WINTER BALL
Right-hander Matt Brazis, the Mariners’ minor-league reliever of the year, vultured a victory Thursday for Surprise in the Arizona Fall League.
Brazis, 25, inherited a one-run lead at Glendale but gave up two runs in his only inning on two hits and two walks. He emerged as the winner when the Saguaros rallied for three runs the following inning in a 7-4 victory.
Third baseman D.J. Peterson went one for three with a walk for Surprise. He is 2-for-6 in two games. First baseman Patrick Kivlehan was 0-for-3 but had two walks.
*Ji-Man Choi played left field Thursday and went 2-for-3 with a homer for Aragua in a 4-1 victory over Caracas on opening day in the Venezuelan Winter League.

Doesn't sound so good on the Saunders front, which bums me out. I really like Michael Saunders and thought he brings a lot to the team. He's battled a bit with the injuries, but had a really decent year when he had a chance.
Hopefully they can bring him back at a lower salary, although I think he deserves a shot at starting

I understand it's the off-season, and writers have to write, but I'm totally over what if predictions when it comes to the Mariners. We had a fantastic season. Sure, we lost out by one game, but nothing we can do right now will change that, and I'm really not a fan of what if scenarios. I guess I'm still salty, but what are you going to do that the life of a Mariners fan.

Or I wrote a story about Matt Kemp possibly being traded...and said the Mariners would be a great fit for him.

So sounds like they are sniffing around Upton, Kemp, and Cespedes. Boston apparently has interest in Iwakuma.....do you include him in a deal for Cespedes?
I'm on the fence, I like Cespedes....most times, he can be a bit inconsistent, but the RH power is obvious. Kuma's contract runs through this year, he's gonna demand a hefty pay raise. I don't think we would be in horrible shape with Felix, Paxton, Walker, Elias and a vet signing tobe honest. Do we pray that Kuma has peaked and trade him while his value is up? Do we do a deal and still acquire another bat like Cruz? or do we settle for just Cruz and keep our pitching?
What do you guys think?

I'm only trading iwakuma for cespedes if they're planing on signing someone to replace him i.e.. lester. They're creating a new problem by fixing one. Cespedes isn't going to hit for a higher average than kemp or upton. He's just a power threat. I would love to have him but not for iwakuma.

It's not gonna matter either way with those 3 batters. No matter which they acquire, they're gonna have to get some pitching depth somewhere else. If they go for Upton or Kemp, they'll probably lose someone like Walker, Paxton, or Elias. Personally I would rather trade Iwakuma with one year left on his deal than move Walker or Paxton

Fair and I totally agree. I guess I'm just of the opinion of not giving up a proven starter who would be a 1 on most teams. At the same time (not sure if I or anyone else mentioned) I'm also not a fan of giving up 4 years of walker for 1 year of upton.

Im all for trading Kuma for any of those 3 they all have huge downsides though Cespedes isnt even really that good of a power hitter 22HR dont think hes ever hit more than 27 and bad defense, Upton Ks like every other at bat, Kemp is the best overall talent IMO but bad D and a premadona.
I absolutly would not trade any of our young pitchers i think they are too good Walker was the worst of them and hes still very very young.
Would love to see Kuma move for one of those guys most likely Cespedes would be who even though i think he highlly overrated. And see a Lester signing(wont happen though) so maybe sign a solid vet for Depth. ANd still sign Cruz or Melky
But im sure we will probally only get one interesting thing and some low risk guys.

From Felix to Seger: How the M's set the stage for success | (http://prospectinsider.com/how-the-ms-set-the-stage-for-success)
From Felix to Seager: How the M’s set the stage for success
The Seattle Mariners entered the offseason with the expectation that significant moves would be made. After all, the club missed the playoffs by a single game in 2014, the first of 10 seasons that Robinson Cano will be paid $24 million. It was also expected that the M’s would pursue contract extensions with a few of their current players, most notably, All-Star third baseman Kyle Seager.
On Monday the Mariners reportedly agreed to terms on an extension that will keep Seager in Seattle for the next seven years with an option for an eighth year. The value of the deal, not including the option, is $100 million, making the third baseman one of three Mariners signed to a nine-figure contract. The other two being Cano and Felix Hernandez.
Seager, 27, had two arbitration years remaining before he would be eligible for free agency. Certainly if he continued his pace for the next two years he could have cashed in on a much larger contract. Asking why he agreed to sign now is as simple or complicated as you want to make it. But the process that lead up to that point isn’t as simple as it would appear.
The Mariners weren’t much of a factor in 2013. There were several young players still making adjustments, veterans on the way out, and top prospects ready on the cusp of the big leagues. Seattle has typically been a place where star players depart rather than sign. Alex Rodriguez, Ken Griffey Jr., and Randy Johnson would all agree. When it came out that the M’s were involved in talks with Cano, who was the top available free agent last winter, many were shocked. When reports came flooding in that he was close to signing with Seattle, the baseball world literally froze.
Why the Mariners would want Cano was obvious, but how the team fit the player wasn’t quite so. Obviously the $240 million and ten years were likely the deciding factor that lured the All-Star second baseman away from the New York Yankees. They couldn’t be the only reasons, though. The potential for the spotlight had to be enticing for Cano as well, but perhaps this all stretches back another couple of steps.
At the conclusion of the 2012 season, Seattle had a predicament: Felix would be a free agent in two years time and the club had finished three consecutive seasons in the American League West cellar. Speculation that the M’s could look to move their ace began and the Yankees and Boston Red Sox, among other teams, were lining up their best package of prospects to offer. GM Jack Zduriencik maintained throughout the winter that he would not trade Hernandez, but as of December extension talks hadn’t amounted to much.
Fast-forward to February and the Mariners were holding a press conference to announce that Felix Hernandez would receive the biggest deal in history for a right-handed pitcher, seven years and $175 million.
The alternative to locking up one of the best pitchers in baseball was to trade him, and the club would have been justified in doing so. But unlike previous Seattle-superstars, Felix wanted to stay in the Emerald City, and made that clear in his commitment.
Not only did Felix’s commitment to the team and city speak measures, ownership’s did too. Prior to the extension the biggest contract handed out by the Mariners was five years and $90 million, given to Ichiro Suzuki in 2008. The King will earn almost double that by the end of his deal. Cano will earn nearly three times that number by the time his deal expires.
Seattle began 2014 with the 18th highest payroll at approximately $92 million. The season concluded with more than $106 million in payroll commitments. Including Seager’s contract, payroll sits at roughly $100 million including arbitration cases.
The commitment to Felix signified a commitment to fielding a winning baseball club. It then becomes imperative that the front office continues to build the club, otherwise that’s just wasted capital. Plus, once you make the first major commitment, the second one tends to be easier. If you are already taking three steps in to the deep end, one or two more doesn’t seem so bad. The motivation is to make those first three steps count.
The Mariners could have dealt the right-hander and ended up being better off long-term, but we’ll never know that for sure. Let’s assume that would not be the case. Maybe one or two of the prospects becomes an everyday player, but that move would have set the team even further away from being in a position to lure a big-name free agent like Cano.
Would Robinson Cano have left the Bronx for Seattle had the Mariners not ponied up the bucks to Felix? It certainly is an interesting question. I don’t know how much Cano loves Starbucks, Pike Place Market, and the tropical Seattle weather but my gut says that he would not be a Mariner. After all, the Yankees were offering seven years and $175 million which is hardly chump change. Factor in the Yankee legacy and a team that’s always in the race and you have a very desirable situation.
Not only did Cano play a significant role in the Mariners’ 87-win season, but he, along with new manager Lloyd McLendon, helped change the dynamic of the team. The clubhouse atmosphere appeared better than it had been in years and the success on the field brought back an energy and excitement. The Mariners were not eliminated from the playoffs until the 2 PM hour on the final day of the season before Felix exited the game to one of the greatest ovations Safeco Field saw all season.
The ship had changed direction and the M’s became relevant again.
In a way the Seager extension really started with the Felix extension. If the club had dealt their ace instead, there’s almost no way they are able to sign Cano. And without either of those two pieces, it’s doubtful the club has the success in 2014 that they did. Say the team finished with a record of 70-92. Does Seager still sign a seven-year extension? Does the team even consider putting out the $100 million? Or is Jack Z shipping off Seager to the highest bidder this winter? All hypotheticals, but not without their merits.
Certainly the chain of events isn’t as simple as the Seager extension not happening without the Cano contract which does not happen without the Felix extension. But if you pay attention, they are all connected.
Typically there are two things that can define a franchise in the eyes of a player: success and a commitment to success. Winning creates a desirable environment and usually a bigger budget for player acquisitions — fans are more willing to pay to watch a winning team. If a team isn’t having success in the standings, they have to make a statement in another way.
Take the Miami Marlins for example. One year after handing out big contracts to Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle the club dealt the pair and anyone else due a salary north of $2 million. As one can expect, considerable backlash fell upon the organization and the club was black-marked by players. The club refusing to agree to any no-trade provision wasn’t the problem. Signing a player to a long-term deal only to move on one year later? That’s just bad business.
So, after a surprising season in which the Marlins weren’t completely terrible, they made the biggest statement they could by giving superstar outfielder Giancarlo Stanton the largest contract in baseball history: 13 years and $325 million. It can take a long time to shake a bad reputation in this industry, and the Marlins have a long way to go, but in many ways the commitment earns back some credibility for the club. The commitment to Stanton can create a perception in the eyes of a free agent that this is a team committed to winning. In many ways, this is what occurred when Seattle extended Felix Hernandez.
The Mariners are in the perfect position to buy, similar to the winter of 2004 when a combined $114 million was shelled out for Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson. There’s a strong, young core, elite players locked up to long-term deals, and a fan base that’s energized for a playoff run. Not to mentioned all that RSN money that is about to start filtering in. And it will be a lot.
There’s clearly more motivation for the Mariners’ front office to spend big on payroll in 2015 and in the future. Between Felix, Cano, and Seager a whopping $415 million is committed. The onus isn’t on the club to spend the new TV money, necessarily, but there is urgency. Almost half a billion dollars is being invested into those three salaries alone. If you’re the one writing the cheques, you’re going to want to make sure that the investment is going to pay off. It becomes a lot easier to spend another $20 million when you are already $120 million deep.
Whatever success the Seattle Mariners have over the next several years can be traced back to the 2014 season, and then back to Felix Hernandez’ extension in 2013. Ownership made the commitment and the motivation for ensuring it pays off is evident. All three of the contracts are steps in the right direction: those wondering whether or not the M’s really do have money to spend this winter and are actually committed to winning have an answer. And that answer can be seen in three different nine-figure contracts.
What happens next is all a matter of opportunity and execution.

Michael Saunders, agent unhappy with criticism from Jack Zduriencik | HardballTalk (http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/10/10/michael-saunders-agent-unhappy-with-criticism-from-jack-zduriencik/)
At the end of the regular season, Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik and manager Lloyd McClendon attended a wrap-up press conference during which they were asked about the promise outfielder Michael Saunders showed despite suffering from injuries which limited his playing time. Zduriencik suggested that Saunders could do more to improve his durability, while McClendon said Saunders could spend more time in the weight room.
Zduriencik went on several different radio stations later that day. On KJR, Dave Mahler asked him about Saunders. Zduriencik doubled down, reiterating that Saunders could be doing more to allow himself the physical capability to play a full season.
That didn’t sit well with Saunders or his agent, Mike McCann. Saunders didn’t directly speak about the issue, but Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times said the outfielder had “obvious frustration in his voice”. McCann, on the other hand, had plenty to say: “It was shocking to hear that,” McCann said. “The first time I heard that was the day of the presser. And Michael was never told that there is something that needed to be changed. If there was, Michael Saunders would do it. These comments don’t reflect Michael Saunders’ work habits. They imply that that he’s lackadaisical.”
McCann also expressed disappointment that Zduriencik publicly criticized Saunders, and added that Zduriencik has yet to have a direct conversation with Saunders.
In 263 plate appearances during the regular season, Saunders hit .273/.341/.450 with eight home runs and 34 RBI. It was easily the most productive the 27-year-old had been at the plate since making his major league debut in 2009. However, Saunders made two trips to the disabled list. The first stretched from mid- to late-June due to inflammation of the A/C joint in his right shoulder. The second caused him to miss 50 games due to a strained left oblique.
Saunders earned $2.3 million during the 2014 season and is eligible for arbitration for the second of three years. Divish suggests it’s unlikely the Mariners try to move Saunders since they have him under control for two more years and the club lacks outfield depth. But one has to wonder that if an offer comes along, which would allow the Mariners to improve the team elsewhere, they would seize the opportunity to turn the page.
It makes perfect sense. Sucks, but makes sense.

I like many others think the Happ pick up is proceeding a bigger move. However I don't think the Happ pick up is a bad one. I loved Saunders but he couldn't stay on the field. I think Toronto won this deal if he can stay healthy on that Astro turf. However I think Happ will do well in Seattle. A pitchers park and he's a fly ball pitcher. I would love to see tulo and also read a rumor on that. But more realistically hoping for kemp over Upton.

Jesus Montero draws praise for offseason workouts
Montero, JesusWhile Jesus Montero has been the subject of considerable criticism in the past, Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik was effusive with his praise for the 25-year-old on Tuesday as he talked about the former top prospect’s offseason efforts.
Montero is spending the winter in Arizona, working out daily with Mariners strength and conditioning coach James Clifford, after being sidelined by the team for the final month of the 2014 season following an altercation with a Mariners scout during a Minor League game.
Montero played six games for Seattle last year, but otherwise spent the year in Triple-A Tacoma, where he hit .286 with 16 home runs and 74 RBIs while converting to first base. The former Yankees top catching prospect was suspended for 50 games in 2013 in the Biogenesis case and then drew Zduriencik’s further ire for showing up last spring overweight.
But Zduriencik said he’s received “very positive reports” about Montero’s efforts this offseason.
“We should tip his hat do what he’s done,” Zduriencik said. “He’s worked extremely hard. He’s worked a lot of days to the point of absolute exhaustion. It was designed that way, to try to get him in a position where he went above and beyond anything he’s ever done before. I think that goal has been accomplished. Everything they’ve told me about how he’s approached this has been extremely positive.”
Zduriencik said the Mariners arranged to have a nutritionist meet with Montero and his wife several times over the offseason to work with his diet and he’s been at their Peoria complex every day to work on his conditioning.
“I think mentally he’s in a good spot,” Zduriencik said. “I think he views himself differently than he probably did a year ago. The process he’s been through has been extremely painful, but I also think there are rewards at the end of this thing. I don’t think any of us would want more than for Jesus Montero to become a really good citizen and a really nice baseball player because the skills are there for him to do it.”
Zduriencik said Minor League coordinator Chris Gwynn told him Montero was the best hitter in Triple-A at times last year and the club remains intrigued by the potential of the right-handed bat of a youngster who hit .260 with 15 home runs and 62 RBIs in 135 games as a rookie in 2012 while splitting time between catcher and designated hitter.
“But he has to maintain these things,” Zduriencik said. “He’s had other obstacles in his life that have prevented him from doing it. But he’s at a really good place in his life right now. He’s really appreciative of what he has and that’s a very important element for him to be successful going forward.”
Whether Montero has a place still with the Mariners remains to be seen. He’ll be invited to Spring Training in February and given the chance to show where he’s at both conditioning-wise and as a player.
“The message I gave him was he has to mentally view himself as a first baseman,” Zduriencik said. “He has to say to himself, ‘This is where I’m going to play.’ If he’s a DH someday, that takes care of itself. But he has to commit himself to being an adequate first baseman. He’s a big, physical guy. If he could play there, it would be a benefit to everybody.”
The Mariners just signed Nelson Cruz to a four-year, $57 million deal to fill their DH role. Logan Morrison returns as the starting first baseman after a strong finish to 2014 in which he hit .262 with 11 home runs and 38 RBIs in 99 games

While I wouldn't like trading Maurer, we'd also be selling high on him right now. Let's be honest....do we REALLY know who the real Brandon Maurer is? Don't get me wrong, he absolutely looked great out of the pen, but he also looked equally terrible in the rotation.
I know he's gonna be coming out of the pen again this season, but it's no guarantee that he'll continue to dominate in that role either. Seth Smith, while not being a huge impact player will provide us a good platoon partner for Ruggiano in RF.
I guess what I'm trying to say is I would be neutral on that trade idea until I saw some results.

The Mariners may have balked at the asking price for Justin Upton, Matt Kemp, and others, but they've solved their outfield solution by acquiring Seth Smith from the Padres in exchange for Brandon Maurer. Smith, 32, is coming off a near-career year in which he posted 2.6 WAR in a heavily platooned role for San Diego, spread across 521 PA. In the two years previous to that, Smith combined for 2.3 WAR in Oakland over 851 PA, all equally platooned.
Smith represents a lot of things Michael Saunders is not. He's been far more consistent at the plate through his career, but he's also past his prime. He's also been a lot healthier, and he has more clear platoon splits. Smith has hit RHP to the tune of a 123 wRC+ over his career, and while his career lines against LHP have historically been inept (63 wRC+), he's hit them better in the past few years, though small sample sizes play a major part of that. Since leaving Colorado in 2011, Smith hasn't had more than 100 PA against lefties in any of the last three years.
At the plate, Smith is essentially the left-handed version of Justin Ruggiano, which is what makes him such an ideal platoon partner. As long as both stay healthy, it's not unreasonable to think the M's could get 2-3 WAR out of the position, all for significantly cheaper than the cost of buying that production from a single player -- whether it be via trade or in the free agent market. Ruggiano carries a 128 career wRC+ against righties to pair with Smith's 123 wRC+.
Smith has defensive limitations. He's graded at as an average defender in left field (where he's mostly played) over his career, but his limited sample in RF looks worse at -7.4 UZR/150. There's also the issue of his arm, which is below average. That will ding his value in right field, and you know Dustin Ackley isn't about to take his noodle arm to right. Whatever Seth Smith has in the hose department, it'll be better than what Ackley would do, but he's got his own range and arm worries.
Steamer projections for Smith are wonky at only 54 games, but he's projected for a 114 wRC+. Dan Symborski already ran ZiPS projections for Smith and came in at .245/.328/.396 -- but stated that a platoon with Ruggiano has a lot to like, and that it's ideal usage for both players. It's not sexy, but there's a very good chance this provides the same (or better) production in right field than the Mariners would have been able to find in the free agent class, or by playing Michael Saunders (and his inevitable cast of replacement players) every day.
We've talked about Seth Smith a lot on the site, so it's no surprise that it's a move worth endorsing. Maurer has the makings of a dominant reliever -- as Andrew wrote about back in October, his transformation out of the rotation was spectacular. But the Mariners do have a massive surplus of a volatile position where futures are far from guaranteed, and Maurer, who's already been wildly up and down in his career, is no exception. Of course this could backfire -- welcome to being buyers. Maurer is supremely talented, but he's still a reliever. It's a clear position of depth for the M's, and in a win-now window Carson Smith is, in theory, ready to step in and fill the gap. It's a classic swap with both sides dealing from positions of strength.
It's fair, and it's something the M's can stomach, even if it's filling a self-inflicted hole. They've still miraculously managed to hold onto their long-term assets, and have (in theory) filled right field for multiple years. Jack Zduriencik said he wouldn't sell out for one-year rentals, and both Ruggiano and Smith are controlled for a minimum of two more years. It's admirable, but we'll see if holding on is enough for 2015.
This also keeps Brad Miller out of the outfield, at least for the time being. That's a great thing, as it keeps Miller's teasing upside at its highest, but also affords them Chris Taylor insurance -- or, depending on how things play out, the other way around.
There will inevitably be complaints that the Mariners didn't have to trade for Smith while Nori Aoki and Colby Rasmus are still free agents. But that operates under the assumption that both players want to play for Seattle, and that they could sign for reasonable money. It also means the M's could watch Smith get dealt somewhere else, see Aoki and Rasmus choose other locations, and be left in the cold. This was a huge hole that had to be filled, even if said hole was self-inflicted. It's not ideal, but that doesn't mean it's bad.
It's interesting to see the process here from start to end. One thing the Mariners clearly desired this is reliability, something the players they've chose to depart with were not. We pretty much know what Seth Smith and J.A. Happ are, and while Saunders and Maurer have nice future upside, they're both extremely volatile going forward. Maurer's upside is good -- for a reliever, which is by it's own definition capped. Viewing the Mariners in a 2015-2016 context, Smith/Happ is safer, but less upside-y than Saunders/Maurer. It might be smart yet unsexy, it might come back to haunt them, but for the sake of looking at the immediate win-now mindset of the M's, they're probably about the same.
Either way, the Saunders move is in the past, and they had to fill the gap they created. The first step was Ruggiano, this is the corresponding move. Given what they've already done, this is the right sequence of events. And still, Taijuan Walker, James Paxton, Brad Miller, and Chris Taylor remain.
There's still room for more to put the M's over the top. But their last gaping hole has been filled.

McClendon riding him into the ground already. Five straight starts (somewhat unheard of in the spring) and more innings than any other catcher. He wants him to start 140 this season; Zunino will have big numbers if that happens but it's highly unlikely (even if Sucre hits .100 this year).
Gonna be a crazy season.
